My train journey home last night took two and a half hours for what is normally a forty minute high-speed dash up the country. It all started well, but the train came to a halt at Wembley Central and some of the lights went out. About ten minutes later the Train Manager announced that there was a burning freight train just ahead of us and, as the fire brigade were busy spraying water around, the power to overhead lines in the immediate area on both sets of north/south lines had been cut. A while later the train's backup power supply depleted and the remaining lights went out. All passengers were forced to vacate and wait on the platform for a while, before squeezing into an already overcrowded London Overground train to Watford where another fast train was waiting.Stopping the trains sound

Italian Real Estate Helped by High Speed Trains
Property in France experienced it when the TGV was rolled out; now Italian property is experiencing a piece-by-piece real estate surge as its own high speed train system is put into place. This is also referred to as the Ryan Air effect, whereby values rise as budget airlines arrive. This is due to the ease of getting to property that was once considered in the middle of nowhere – or at least hard to get to.

      Trains
I took this picture in Garkalne near the Ropaži railway station. Sometimes it is very mixed up here in Latvia. You see, Ropaži is a real town in Latvia and it is something like 20 or more kilometers away from this place. And the station is right in the center of other town named Garkalne. Doesn't make sense...

      How Fast do Trains Move?
By: Elmo Kandel When you are running late for work and waiting for the train to finish going by so you can cross, it doesn't seem like they are going very fast. They do travel at fairly decent speeds though when you consider the amount of weight the equipment is hauling. The source they depend on for energy as well as what they are carrying determines their speed. The first trains in the 1800's were only able to operate at a speed of approximately five miles per day. Freight trains and passenger trains such as AmTrak generally operate at a speed between 55 and 65 miles per hour. While they can go faster they don't for safety reasons. The faster a train is traveling the longer it takes it to stop if there is something on the tracks in front of it.Many commuter trains travel at a rate of 65-75 miles per hour. It depends on the amount of distance between each stop. The more stops that they have the slower they operate in order to be able to protect the equipment from unnecessary wear

      The lure of European Trains
Whenever I pass a grand European train station I can't help but have a look inside and see what possibilities are on offer. Even though I am in one of the great cities of Europe and not in any hurry to leave, the lure of European train travel is always strong.Budapest has three main train stations, of which Keleti palyaudvar receives most of the international arrivals and departures.Keleti PalyaudvarOne afternoon when I wandered past there were trains waiting on the platform for Moscow, Zurich and Venice, with a train for Bucharest listed on the departure board.Budapest Keleti Departure BoardMoszkva TrainVenezia TrainZurich Train

Trains aren't a lost art in San Francisco
By: Demetria Kobold One of the greatest things about visiting San Francisco is the close proximity to nearby attractions. You can stay in one city while visiting several. You can not only get the conveniences of being in the city, but the beauty of nature is not too far away from almost any point within the city. In fact, a short train ride will take you rather quickly to some nearby attractions that are definitely worth checking into. One of the first train tours I'll mention isn't only a train tour but a bus and train tour. This tour goes from San Francisco to Yosemite Park. This trip requires transfers back and forth from bus to train but offers some beautiful scenery and the ability to enjoy it without the worry of driving, rest stops, and a need to simply stretch your legs. Sometimes a little inconvenience is worth a lot more convenience later in your trip. The train portion of the tour lasts about three hours and you get to spend three hours in Yosemite. For some it isn't wort

Basses, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Part 5: All-Night Drives
This topic was actually the very first personal narrative ever attempted here on the blog, a little less than a year ago. While I still enjoy this previous post (with pictures of the described drive), the topic of all-night commuting is such a painfully bizarre one that I thought it could stand to be dusted off and revisited for this series. Read the complete series: Part 1 - Cabs Part 2 - Trains Part 3 - Planes Part 4 - Flight Mishaps As I neared the graduation date for my masters degree, I happened to land two orchestra jobs--one in Memphis, Tennessee and one in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The two schedules magically coincided, with nary a conflict between the two, and I was overjoyed at this, certain of at least 14 weeks of orchestral employment that first year out of school. Examining the dates more closely, I realized that many of the 8 p.m. Saturday concerts in Memphis were followed by 11 a.m. rehearsals in Milwaukee. I panicked, seeing my future employment crumbl

Haunting Images of Undiscarded Planes, Trains, and Aircraft.
Ever wonder what happens to used planes, trains, and military aircraft? Where do they go? and What is done with them? Below are some haunting images that show where some have ended up and where some are still standing today, many years after their former life. Mining Vehicles in Namibia Graveyard Military Aircraft Dead in Arizona Old Steam Engines in Bolivia - R.I.P. To see the “submarine cemeteries” with nuclear subs from the cold war, visit the source site. It is a shame these vehicles have not found a proper home and are laying, sitting, floating in places where people live, and or drive by on a regular basis. Alot of this waste has gone unhandled mostly because of monetary reasons. but….. Surely the federal or state governments (not too mention the media) can take some time off from lesser issues (i.e. bill o’reilly rants) and focus on getting rid of dangerous and unhealthy equipment that is environmentally unsound. Reason #18293: Why I Hate Taking Trains
This morning, while on my way to work, I overheard this lady instructing another lady loudly to move in. The response was “都没有位了,还走什么?你是不是中国人?” It meant “There’s no space, how to move in? Are you from China?” Somehow, the remark on moving in further the car of the train would come from the mouths of those form China. Not that I’m biased but there was this lady whom I met while waiting for this bus is that is forever slow and crowded who said the same thing, “move further in.” I guess they are not embarrassed to tell people to think and move in so that others who may be rushing for time to board the public transport. The remark on the nationality earned another remark that Singaporeans have no brains and are fixed on standing on the “best” spot so as to alight easier. It could have stared an international war. The never ending reason why I hate taking trains, especially during peak hours.

      Toy Trains in the Ghetto
I don’t cover a lot of toys here that don’t fall under the action figure umbrella, but every once in awhile a non-action figure orientated toy will catch my eye. In this case it’s a pretty interesting electric train layout. Come to think of it, I don’t know if anyone can still consider electric trains “toys”, considering there’s not that many kids that are into them as there middle aged (or older) guys with elaborate set ups in their basements. I digress, this train set is notable only because it puts a spin on the classic train diorama. It doesn’t portray a perfect world of well manicured lawns, quaint old village shops, and lots of white people. This set depicts urban decay in it’s most depressing: (more…)

Faster trains set to inflate Paris property market
A report earlier this year highlighted Paris' position as top city for property investment. The Emerging Trends in Real Estate® report by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Urban Land Institute underlines the city's economic stability and sustainability, as well as placing Paris in first place for supply and demand balance. Unlike the UK, this balance means there's a good chance buyers will find the sort of property they're looking for, and sellers will typically not have long to wait when selling up. What's more, the plans of the new President, Nicolas Sarkozy, to provide tax breaks to encourage home ownership will surely have a positive impact on rent return and capital growth over the next few years.

Wipro trains its employees in Japanese
The company has set up a centre at its Chennai campus dedicated to teaching its employees how to walk, talk and think in Japanese. I”ve been working with Japanese clients and communication is very difficult plus their business ethics and mannerisms are different from the rest of the world, Parag a trainee at Shimpo said. Its us who have to learn the language because most of them don”t know English and so to communicate we have to, said another trainee Sanjay. Cultural sensitivity is very important says the company, especially with the Japanese. To understand the nuances of their culture every year, all employees going to Japan on long-term projects are made to undergo this training.

Trains and Monorails and Trolleys, Oh My… But Ultra Light Rail?
Today’s post continues on this week’s transportation theme. A few days ago we posted an article about electric cars and it got us thinking - what about electric forms of mass transportation? So we started researching, and found some of the most interesting new developments we’ve come across in quite some time. One project being researched in California (among other places) caught our attention through its innovative use of photovoltaics - the solar powered ultra light rail. Ultra Light Rail? We’ve heard of trains, subways, monorails, light-rails, trolleys, but what exactly is an “ultra light rail,” and how do they keep it powered using only solar energy? Great questions have great answers. The ULR (ultra light rail) is a smokeless, noiseless rail-based mass transit system. The technology behind the design comes from great advances in solar racing car technology (like the NASCAR of alternative energy). Each train car in the ULR holds between 20 – 40 passengers seat

Run by volunteers and train enthusiasts it's a fun activity for an Alaskan summer afternoon--even with the drizzle of rain we had when we were there last month. The train has room for twenty or so people and the fifteen-minute train ride takes you over tressle-bridges and tiny gorges, underneath tracks and birch boughs, criss-crossing and chugging along in the quaintest way. Along the track are tiny houses, water towers and trucks that make you feel as if you're Gul

In case readers missed it, Phillip Serna posted a great video of Jay Leonhart singing a song about getting a bass on a plane. Check out Phillip's post here.Bass blog contributor Benjy reminded me about this post he contributed concerning European train travel woes. He also shared with me some of his experiences with bass flight cases:I also have a Stevenson case which I purchased 25 years ago when I was with the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra. I made them buy one and bought one for myself. Theirs went through 2 months of touring in the states, while mine was used it only on 2 occasions, the first to go to Colorado, the second to Israel. Ever since then, I have kept it in my various cellars for years and years. Now that I no longer have a real need to travel by myself, I have finally decided to sell it so that it can be of use to someone. Stevenson has made a contact for me and I'll be getting rid of it soon.I improved the mobility of both of these old cases by adding a 360° pivoting w
