We’ve been planning to plant some trees in our front yard for several months now. One of the nice things about our street is the abundance of large trees. It is especially beautiful right now with the leaves turning color. While we were planning the addition of trees to our yard, we discovered that our neighbor across the street was planning the removal of his trees. Which is disappointing. I’m no arborist but his trees look healthy enough. They survived last Winter’s ice storm better than most. Besides they offer excellent shade for a south facing home and (most important to me) they are what we see when looking out our large living room window. I should also mention that several endangered squirrels live in these trees. I’m tempted to try to convince him not to cut down his trees, with appeals of money, photos of baby squirrels and scientific literature on the sun and the effects of it’s harmful rays. Each year over 4 million dogs are euthanized in shelters across the country. For a nation of dog lovers, this is a very sad statement. It is not that shelter workers want to do this but with so many dogs, there is little else to do. There are many rescue organizations helping and I will highlight two of them here. DogsInDanger - DogsInDanger is an Internet-based national shelter outreach program dedicated to helping shelters save the millions of dogs that they are forced to euthanize. Dogs are listed with a photo and a profile similar to what you’ve seen, and perhaps had posted, on other pet adoption sites. The big difference with DogsInDanger is that this site is only for urgent shelter dogs. The date each dog is scheduled to be euthanized is displayed along with the dogs’ pictures and names. This last week, my wife and I were in New York, and decided to go see the World Trade Center site. The motivation for going was something of a mix between true sadness, morbid curiosity, and my 1st grade son really wanting us to. So many things struck me while I was there… I was amazed at how people stand in front of handwritten notes from a dead fireman’s kid, waving and smiling for souvenir pictures. I had a wave of paranoia and fear of thinking about flying home with my wife, something like that happening to us, and our boys growing up alone. It is very common to see provision shop owners displaying their goods outside their shops. If you go to places like Toa Payoh for example, you would see lots of goods along the corridors such that any passer-by would find it difficult to move to the other side of the row of shophouse.
