Modern Tennis Clothes Bridge The Gap Between Tradition And Style
There was a time when selecting tennis clothes was quite a simple endeavor; the tradition of wearing tennis whites made the selection process quite streamlined. However, as anyone who follows tennis knows, the days of watching Martina Navratilova or Jimmy Connors take the court wearing all white are long gone, and today's game is one that embraces fashion forward styles and functional fabrics. Today's best players, like Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova, are often seen in apparel that spans the spectrum of color and fashion; not surprisingly, the rest of the tennis world has followed suit. Today's tennis clothes look great on and off the court, and they are made with performance fabrics that surpass the cottons of the past in nearly every way. Diana looks at Wright's words from the point of view of the long history of radical, prophetic African-American preaching, and concludes that they are offensive:But the attack on Rev. Wright...demonstrates the level of misunderstanding that still divides white and black Christians in the United States. Many white people find the traditions of African-American preaching offensive, especially when it comes to politics. I know because I am one of those white people. And that's the point. Comfort the afflicted, afflict the comfortable - and we comfortable white people might benefit from shutting up and listening. Not for the first time in the history of this nation. And for Go

Romantic Tradition and Shakespeare (with special reference to 'As You Like It')
The play ‘As You Like It’ was adapted from a romance in prose called ‘Rosalynde’ by Thomas Lodge. The play was in the romance tradition and at the same departure from it.Disguise and mistaken identity were also the techniques that Shakespeare borrowed from the romantic literature. These techniques brought confusion in their wake and also resulted in humourous situations. They also enabled Shakespeare to focus attention on the theme that in this world appearances are often deceptive.Shakespearean comedy owes the concept of poetic justice to romance literature. WAYANG BEBER - The Ancient Tradition of East Java
A classical Wayang Beber Performance in 1900One of some kinds of wayang in East Java is Wayang Beber - they have nearly vanished. The most popular of all forms is Wayang Beber Pacitan. This kind of wayang is neither made of wood not leather but paintings drawn on a scrolled sheets of bark paper. Every scene in the story is painted on a piece of paper in rotation.Since when this kind of wayang has been found in Pacitan exactly is not known yet, nevertheless the age of the existing wayang Beber has reached an age of 12 generations up to the present. The performer (Dalang) gives a sign, the gamelan orchestra (or a musician with a violin-like instrument) begins to play and the Dalang unrolls a picture related to the story. Then, speaking and singing, he narrates the story in more detail. In thi

      Tradition!
I love traditions. I really do. Being an Aggie it almost comes naturally. There's a saying, along the lines of "if something happens once it's coincidence, twice it's a tradition".Some traditions, however, I can do without.Like the newly established traditional gift for Liler'E. The gift of disease. For Christmas, the poor kid got RSV and ran a fever up to 104°F. Now, for his birthday, our little trouper has a double ear infection.I don't know who keeps giving him these presents, but I wish they'd stop! How about a nice savings bond, instead?

      ORISSAN TRADITION OF PATTA PAINTING
The art tradition of Orissa has a long continuity and is considered very rich and vivid. If we travel back in time, then we find that the most ancient paintings were drawn by the pre-historic artists in the rock shelters of Western Orissa. Since then, the Oriya Chitrakars have contributed liberally and developed a distinct identity through their creations. Broadly, the state’s schools of paintings can be classified as tribal, folk and classical. It is interesting to note that these schools gained immensely by receiving from each other. The earliest rock paintings of Orissa are found in Ulapgarh and Vikramkhol of the undivided Sambalpur district, Manikamad and Ushakothi in Sundergarh district and Gudahandi and Yogimatha of Kalahandi district. With about 24 percent tribal population, the st

      Christmas Tradition
It's all over but the wrapping!  I was actually done with my shopping Saturday, but today was going to do some grocery shopping since I had the time.  However, when I arrived at Publix there was no parking - cars were parked out near the street, so I said forget it and headed for home. For me, it's a tradition ... wrapping presents all night long while watching "A Christmas Story" repeat over and over again.  Tonight, I was a little farther ahead than usual, but I still left all of hubbys things to wrap.  My house even smells like Christmas since I've been burning a Balsam and Cedar Yankee Candle. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!  I check in later and let you know what Santa brought me.

A Christmas Tradition from my Chiropractor to You
I was needing my back adjusted a few days ago and went in for an open appointment my wife had.Dr. Lindsell of Columbia, MD has been our chiropractor for quite a few years shared a rather neat Christas tradition.  He and his family usually host the Christmas get together.  About 5 years ago his brother and family, who make up at least the clan, made it to the house about 15 minutes after the dinner was ready.  (Cold turkey - ewww) They have decided to order out since then and there seemed to be only one place consistently open on Christmas Day - Chinese! So after having appetizers warming and ready, the clan waits until everyone arrives and then order Chinese food.  It arrives about 20 minutes later, piping hot and ready to go.  No one has to majorly cook and everyone gets to do what's most important - visit and be of good cheer!  Merry Christmas, y'all!

We came across a couple of nice spots to take some pics...a sleigh-in-the-snow display and the Macy's Christmas tree. After we wandered around the store a bit, we took an elevator ride to the second floor (Mommy let me push the button). Gingerbread Latte - A Christmas Tradition
People say that there's always a first time to everything, and though you pretty much govern whether you want to do something or not, there are times when you just get carried away by the flow and end up trying something you might have had some reservations about. One such thing that happened to me after coming to US was tasting different coffee flavors, and I must say, it was the best thing ever! I love flavored lattes, hazelnut and tiramisu being my all-time favorites. But this holiday season, my friend at work made me taste the traditional gingerbread latte. She took me to Starbucks and paid for my coffee just so I would get to know and taste the wild and spicy flavor that is zipped up in this one amazing drink! This seasonal favorite will surely make you feel warm and cozy, and ignite fond memories of the gingerbread man and the spirit of christmas!Gingerbread has its roots in Europe, mainly Germany. Between Tradition and Relevance
Okay, so if you’re at all familiar with me, you know that I am a Buddhist (the word “Zen” in Zen Punk Diary should have been a clue). But like a lot of Buddhists here in America, I wasn’t raised Buddhist. I was raised Christian. As such, Christmas with all of it’s traditions of Christmas trees, decorations, lights, smells, music, crowds, etc. was an annual part of my childhood. Even as a Buddhist now, I find myself emotionally drawn to certain aspects of those traditions, most of which have little or nothing to do with the religious aspects of the Christian holiday, i.e. the celebration of Jesus’ mythical birth. This past weekend was a cool one by Phurnace, AZ standards (highs around 60 degrees — HEY! Don’t you roll your eyes at me!). Saturday night, my partner Eileen and I served as baristas for a fundraiser for the Uganda Community School Project (the one started by my dear friend Kaay Grosso before Oprah decided to copycat the idea). The Military Tradition in Ancient Israel
Leonard Goenaga Professor Larson REL3280 27 November 2007 The Military Tradition in Ancient Israel             In May of 1967, Egypt gathered over 1,000 tanks and 100,000 infantrymen while calling for a unified Arab attack against the newly formed Israeli nation. Israel, fearing such an engagement, launched a pre-emptive strike against Egypt, and later muscled back the invading state of Jordan. In the end the Israeli nation gained control of the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, the Gohan Heights, the West Bank, and Eastern Jerusalem in what was considered a tremendous military victory. Although many historians and military strategist marvel at the Israeli display of supremacy and strength during the Six Day War, it is not something new to the Jewish people. A simple journey back into the Israelite’s past, and a dive into the Old Testament, can testify to this military voyage. This paper will explore the rich military tradition of the ancient Israelites, and follow their b

      Wine Drinking Tradition in Georgia
If you want to write a book about tradition go to Georgia. There are different traditions in various parts of Georgia. Many foreigners write and speak about wine drinking traditions in Georgia. Georgians drink a lot of wine, but not every day; only if there are guests over or something is being celebrated. In the past centuries Georgians did not drink so much wine at the feast. They drank only one bowl/cup of wine during the meal. If there was a guest or was something being celebrated there were drunk max 3 bowls/cups of wine. During the feast Georgians would sing songs and say toasts. Women were not allowed at the table. There was a table in another room specially led for women. Women also drank a little wine, sang and dance. Both men and women had their own Tamada (A tamada is a toastmaster at a Georgian Supra or feast).Nowadays women are allowed to seat at the table with men. They are not expected to drink much but among men drinking is a test of their strength and manfulness. It is l

When I hosted Fun Monday a few weeks ago I asked to hear about your holiday traditions, but neglected to share any of mine, mainly due to the timing. A Foodie Froggy in Paris also asked for me to share a holiday recipe several weeks ago, so here I go! This is a Christmas must in all Irish homes - Christmas Pudding. If you're in the states you may have heard it referred to as Plum pudding or Figgy Pudding. Essentially it a very wet, very boozy boiled fruit cake. In England they tend to use lots of different fruits such as plums, figs, dates and the like, whereas we tend to rely more on raisins, currants, sultanas and fruit peel (I know this is called something else in the States, but can't think of what it is - candied peel maybe???) Bridal Jewelry Fullfilling a Wedding Tradition
‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. ’ This is a saying that many brides take to heart when considering their wedding trousseau. From wedding gowns, accessories and motifs, brides from all walks of life throughout the years have tried their best to stick to this formula. It’s interesting to note that bridal jewelry can follow this adage, too. ‘Something old’ could most often be a piece of bridal jewelry that is a family heirloom. Sometimes the groom would give to his bride a ring or another piece of jewelry that had once been owned by his mother, grandmother, or past brides in his family. Maybe the bride would wear her own mother’s antique jewelry or some other gem that has been handed down to brides in the family from generation to generation. One thing is certain, wearing such bridal jewelry would reinforce a sense of family, tradition and continuity in a wedding ceremony. ‘Something new’ hardly needs any e

Works For Me Wednesday (Backwards Edition): Thanksgiving Tradition
Thanksgiving is coming up. And because I originally came from the Philippines and "Thanksgiving Day" was not a holiday we celebrated when I was young, I am do not have memories of it, nor do I have ideas how to best celebrate it.I love family traditions - we have lots of Christmas family traditions when I was growing up. My hubby is from Connecticut, and I thought he would have a lot of "Thanksgiving Day" tradition he could start in our family, but I couldn't get much from him. So, would you please help me ... if you have one that works for your family - would you share it with me? Thank you.Oh by the way, Works For Me Wednesday is "backwards" again this week. Go there for more questions that needs to be answered - maybe you can help. Or if you have a question yourself, why not start a post and link it there.

John Grillo on Oktoberfest - New World Symphony tradition
Bass blog and Contrabass Conversations regular contributor John Grillo recently wrote a post on his new blog project ClassicalMusicNews.tv about the New World Symphony's Oktoberfest a tradition that he created when he was a fellow there. John writes: A long standing tradition has been brewing at the New World Symphony for 8 consecutive years. On Oct 20, 2007 the New World Symphony held its 8th Annual Oktoberfest. I founded this tradition 8 years ago and I am so proud to see that it has continued to this day. The first Oktoberfest was held on Oct. 15, 2000. It was an absolutely beautiful day and we all had a wonderful time. We gorged on over a dozen entrees and sidedishes, then washed it down with 3 Kegs of some great Oktoberfest beer. The summer prior to the event, about 12 of us from New World attended the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan. Sapporo is one of the premier beer cities in the world and we were fortunate to be able to experienc

Legacy of Babel and Inheritors of the Abrahamic Tradition | Anab Whitehouse
GENESIS 11:1. And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.2. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.3. And they said one to another, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar.4. And they said, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.... In the matter of Babel, the wrong choice was made [namely, how to use the gift of time], the wrong intention underlay that choice [in other words, to serve ego rather than to glorify Divinity], the wrong methodology was used to try to reach God [i.e., that of external, legalistic, arbitrary, rule-governed methods rather than through principle-bound indigenous, esoteric methods] and creative imagination was inappropriately used and called upon to serve human purposes rather than Di

      Modernity and tradition
The Fabian Society has asked MPs what they think Ed Miliband should include in the next election manifesto. The range of suggestions reflect what a broad church the Labour Party is, and as such some suggestions are better than others. It would be good to see advocacy of an expert House of Lords, an audit of the Scottish Executive (and the whole Barnett system), better sex education, a review of NHS treatment priorities, a new engagement with the EU, resolution of the Westphalian question and a renewed commitment to education. These are all key areas where a moderate social democratic response is needed. Some ideas are not so good, and should be left out of any future Labour programme. A reduction of the rich-poor divide would not help the poor and would disincentivise the rich. Universal childcare and school meals would prove expensive, especially as economic slowdown will reduce Treasury income (as the Scottish Parliament will discover). A War Powers Act would limit Britain's ability t

      Mustaches - A Thanksgiving Tradition
Movember is some weird name an organization of mustache growers have given to the month of November. I’ll let the site itself explain: “At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants known as Mo Bros then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache and along the way raise as much money and awareness about male health issues, in particular prostate cancer as possible.” It’s for a good cause so I can’t make too much fun of it. The cowboy from the Village People is involved according to TMZ and has quite the thick mustache on his face. So he’s got to shave that thing off before November and then regrow it? Why doesn’t he just keep it? Sounds overly complicated. Besides, a mustache can never be complete with a goatee. It’s like peanut butter and jelly, you’ve gotta have both. Old, New, Borrowed, And Blue: Fresh Ideas For A Wedding Fashion Tradition
By: Jason MartinezEveryone has heard the age-old saying, Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. These items are supposed to bring a bride good luck and happiness in her marriage. You can incorporate these things into your wedding in many creative ways.Your wedding dress can serve as any of the four requirements. Many brides wear a new dress, but you could opt for a vintage one if it fits with the style of your wedding. You could also borrow your mothers dress, or that of another friend or relative. Wedding dresses are not required to be white or ivory any more, so a blue dress is an option if you so desire. If you love vintage jewelry, its a great way to incorporate something old with style. Online auctions are often a good place to find antique earrings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches, and even hair accessories. Your local antique store is also a great source for vintage jewels. Just make sure that whatever you choose fits into your weddings theme and your dr

Women in Islam versus Women in the Judeo-Christian Tradition
The Western media is portraying women in Islam as the symbol of subordination of women ‘par excellence’. This picture is so complete that even an attempt to scratch it is in vain. Unfortunately, many journalists choose to rely on wellknown stereotypes. Muslims count over 1 billion in the world altogether and naturally many sects, small and large, have split from the moderate mainstream Islam, which constitutes ca. 90 % (called the “Sunni”-Muslims). In most Muslim countries today women are advancing and exercising their rights by participating in politics, education, working as judges, professors, doctors etc. I warmly recommend the following web page to all my readers … since you have come to my page you should not miss that one. There you will find proof that it was the Judeo-Christian Tradition that truly oppressed women and it is the Islamic teaching where you find equality and companionship between a man and a woman… And the Veil is not an Islamic invention! &ld

      A new tradition
Last night I had loads of laundry to wash,a kitchen floor to mop,two baby blankets to make (can my friends please stop having babies? LOL)and birthday party prep to do.Did I do it,you ask? No. I plopped in front of the tv.Watched Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters. And wrapped 52 Christmas books. The picture is of only one stack.Last year I decided I was going to wrap a Christmas book for each boy (the 2 littlest ones) to open every night of December up until Christmas Day. So we could read together about Christmas every night before bed.To get us in the spirit. And the two older ones will open their books December 1 and have 25 days to read theirs. I picked A Christmas Carol and The Best Christmas Pagaent Ever.So all they need are ribbons and they are good to go.One less thing I have to do for the Holidays.

Vinayaka Charthuti Tradition and Nievedyam for God!
Vinayaka Charthuti is celebrated with much enthusiasm at home. Festivals are always a time when Amma excels herself with many varieties of goodies prepared for Nievedyam. Each festival/ Pooja is marked with a specialty dish that she makes and we eagerly wait for each of the festival to savour these traditional dishes. As kids, I remember going to the market to get the Vinayaka Idol in the morning. When I started riding, I used to go with my brother and used to get the idol. This year, Hubby dear tagged our daughter along, to get the Idol in the morning. Hubby dear is always very fond of this pooja as he says its celebrated with much fun and frolic at his native. I try to keep the spirit by continuing the tradition. But since I never really learnt how the traditional goodies are made, it always used to be just polis, but this time wanted to please God with all his favorite dishes. Humanism and Education in Medieval and Renaissance Italy: Tradition and Innovation in Latin Schools from the Twelfth to the Fifteenth Century
Author: Robert BlackPaperback: 506 pagesPublisher: Cambridge University Press (September 2001)Language: EnglishISBN: 0521401925(R)The claim, central to many interpretations of the Renaissance, that humanists introduced a revolution in the classroom is refuted in Robert Black's masterly survey, based on over 500 manuscript school books. He shows that the study of classical texts in schools reached a high point in the twelfth century, followed by a collapse in the thirteenth as universities rose in influence. It was not until the later 1400s that humanism had a significant impact in the schoolroom, as Italian teaching, particularly at elementary levels, remained strongly traditional throughout the fifteenth century. To spank or not to spank? Parents, experts debate the old tradition
"Spare the rod and spoil the child?" Or, do you believe "Spanking is child abuse?" ...something in between, perhaps?Like most Americans, I was spanked as a child; and spanked - not only my own children, but as a young principal in Kenton County in the 1980s, I might have spanked your child, too. In fact, in those days many parents expected school principals to act on their behalf in their absence. Some still do.But that trust has been undermined - sometimes by principals themselves. Some folks made the spanking about the adult instead of being about the child. Some kids got beaten and bruised. Unconscionable. Now relatively few principals spank. State law still permits it, but most school district policies don't.This from the Medville Tribune.Spanking kids is as American as mom and apple pie. Most children in this country — more than 90 percent — catch it from parents at some point while growing up.When a California state representative brought up the idea of outlawing spanking of

Hungarian Wine Tradition - By Carl Hoffman
By Carl Hoffman Despite what many may think, the area known as Hungary holds more wine tradition than any other country in Europe. Most of this very tradition is just now surfacing in the light, with people finally starting to catch wind about everything Hungarian wine has to offer. Even though many wine drinkers aren’t familiar with Hungary - there are many who are. Hungary is home to over 20 wine regions, fully of forests, vineyards, and orchards. With several different varieties of grapes to offer, the vineyards found in Hungary have flourished since the great Roman Times. The weather in Hungary is seasonal to say the least, with cold winters and extremely hot summers. This weather allows the soil in the country to be diverse, which allows wine makers to create a variety of quality wines. Despite the communist control in the past, there are several different wines found in Hungary. Although the vineyards here produce a lot of excellent wines, Tokay Aszu is by far the favori

We had this wine last night when having a BBQ in the backyard. The dinner contained of a Spanish spice rubbed chicken with spicy parsley and mint sauce, grilled vegetables and a tomato/corn salad. This syrah has a dark, dense, purple/red color in the glass. On the nose it shows black cherry, dark fruit and black currant. On the palate, intense dark, ripe, cherries again with black berries and some oak. This wine was very concentrated in the dark, ripe, fruit and berries but manages to balance that pretty well with decent acidity and round tannins. Over all not an amazing syrah but certainly good. Worked well with our meal, and it won't break your bank. Find it at Wine-Searcher.com from $26.45.Vote for my blog here and help me reach top 10 on The Blog TopI am now in top 11!

This is another bottle we got in our latest shipment from Fess Parker wine club. The 2005 American Tradition Reserve Santa Barbara County Chardonnay has a clean, medium dark, straw color in the glass. On the nose this wine shows citrus, apple, white floral, caramel and oak. The apple shows up on the palate again, this time more green and tart. Citrus and good acidity balances the round, creamy palate. Much to often chardonnays leave you with a too creamy, cloying finish but thanks to the really nice acidity, this one exits with a pleasant round, but fresh feeling. This chardonnay is not yet available to the public. I payed $30 through the wine club and it will be around $35 as it reaches retail. A really nice Chardonnay but it seems to belong more in the $25 range... Give it a try. You be the judge...
