As of early May 2008 Google implemented major changes to its trademarks policies and lifted restrictions on branded keywords being used in competitor's campaigns in the UK and Ireland. Many advertisers/agencies were displaying apprehension and concern toward the changes and the effects on their campaigns.                

According to UK trademark records, on June 27 Land Rover began the process of registering the name "E_Terrain". This name was used to identify Land Rover's new hybrid systems that were featured in the Land_e Concept which debuted back in 2006. The list of 30 products selected to participate in the National Trademark programme was announced on April 8 at a press conference hosted by the Viet Nam Trade Promotion Agency (VIETRADE). Beginning on May 5, 2008, the AdWords trademark policy for the UK and Ireland will change. The new policy will be aligned with the current one established in the United States and Canada. AdWords users in the UK and Ireland will be able to bid on keywords that contain trademarked words, but will not be able to include trademarked names in their ad text. Until now, accounts in those countries could not bid on trademarked terms. The U.S. policy has sparked controversy in the courts, which can't seem to agree on the use of trademark in PPC bidding. The change comes in the wake of recent reports that clicks on Google paid search results have been declining.

Cisco Systems and Apple said Wednesday they have settled the trademark-infringement lawsuit over the use of the iPhone name for Apple's new multimedia phone. The agreement allows Apple and Cisco to use the iPhone brand on their own products. Also, the companies said that they would explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, consumer and business communications. The brief announcement made no reference to any financial agreement or specified how the two companies might work together. Representatives for Apple and Cisco declined to comment further, citing confidentiality restrictions.
