Filed under: Cellphones Ask yourself this: Are you a statistic or a specific example? That’s the question being raised in the aftermath of a study in which researchers secretly tracked the locations of 100,000 people to determine their movement patterns. Such studies are considered invasions of privacy — and illegal — in the United States, but [...]

If You Are Passing Through Manchester, You Are Being Watched and Tracked.
So I saw the following story on the BBC and my initial reaction was that it made me cringe. Now, one argument is that if you’re not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about but knowing that your every move is being tracked and stored by the government just doesn’t give me the [...]

Predatory Mortgage Companies Fast Tracked To Federal Court
The facts about predatory loan practices in minority communities are not new. In 2006 the Center for Responsible Lending released a study that found when income and credit risk were equal, African-Americans were more than 30 percent more likely to receive higher-rate, more expensive subprime loans than Caucasians. 'Internet activity is tracked more than we realize'

Truthfully, I dont care if they do it for advertising, but fuck, leave it at that! I have invested a lot of trust into Google and Yahoo!... I'd hate to see them let us down with any corruption or

Military Tuesday : SS-1 "Scud-B' Tracked TEL Illustration
Found this picture of a tracked transporter-erector-launcher (TEL) for the infamous SS-1 Scud-B ballistic missile, better known for its use by the Iraqi army as a terror weapon against Israeli cities during the 1991 Gulf War. This 1983 artwork happens to be the illustration for September 2007, one of the twelve art pieces for the recently updated DIA Military Art Collection 2007 Calendar series. © Defense Intelligence Agency. Before seeing this image, I didn’t know that the original TEL was not the wheeled 8×8 MAZ-543P/9P117M truck (below) commonly shown in news reports of that time (see BBC article on the Scud missiles) but a tracked vehicle like the one above (derived from the IS-2 tank, one of the last Russian heavy tanks to see service in WW2). The above MAZ-543P/9P117M image was taken from Wikipedia. There’s a 1978 illustration of this vehicle by Dennis Mosher in the DIA galleries here. Qatar Dugongs to be tracked by helicopter
-Qatar has the second largest population of dugongs in the world, but little is known of these secretive creatures that often avoid the ocean’s shallows.Dugongs feed on sea grass at the bottom of the sea. The creatures are slow moving, and a recent study in California found that they avoid their natural predators, sharks, by staying in deep water. Now these rare creatures, which may be in danger of extinction, are to be tracked by military cameras mounted on helicopters in part of a initiative by SCENR, Dolphin Energy and the Qatar Air force, according to the Gulf Times. If you want to know more about Qatar’s marine life, watch out for the second of Francis Gillespie’s article on Qatar Nature, which will be published next month and will include pictures of dugong. The first article, An Introduction to Qatar’s Natural History, can be seen on the Natural History section of our website.Note - image taken from Wikipedia's page on Dugongs. Also see Qatar Sea SlugsQatar Visitor e-store

How To: Avoid Being “Tracked 100% of The Time” When Using P2P and Bittorent (Noob Friendly)
According to researchers at UC Riverside, “use a blocklist or you will be tracked… 100% of the time“. That’s an awful statistic. It comes from an article found on Ars Technica, so you know its pretty darn reputable information. I recommend you read the whole article (already linked up there). However, here is a small excerpt: Title: P2P researchers: use a blocklist or you will be tracked… 100% of the time The old cliché “You’re not paranoid if they really are out to get you” turns out to apply quite nicely to the world of P2P file-sharing. A trio of intrepid researchers from the University of California-Riverside decided to see just how often a P2P user might be tracked by content owners. Their startling conclusion: “naive” users will exchange data with such “fake users” 100 percent of the time. Sources: ARS TECHNICA via HACK THE PLANET rss Basically, at the very least, you need to use a blocklist or you ar
