There are many reasons why cities are abandoned; some, like the ghost towns of the American West, have become tourist destinations while others have been condemned or simply forgotten. These abandoned cities of the world share an eerie, haunted quality that is part of what makes them so fascinating. The Kowloon Walled City was located just outside Hong Kong, China during British rule. Under a proposal from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, up to five ‘eco-towns’ will be constructed in Britain that will be completely carbon-neutral. How can that be bad, you ask? Residents will be fined for taking their cars out of town and will be forced to park on the outskirts and walk to their homes. [...]

The ancient fishing economy gave rise to many small seaside villages in addition to the single seaport town of St. John's. The establishment of the mining and pulp and paper industries, within the first part of the 20th century, has brought about the growth of a number of fair sized towns in various parts of the island. The urban geography of these places is thus an important phase of the geograph

There are 2 old towns that we visited, one is called Shuhe (束河古镇) and another is Lijiang (丽江古城).Our motel is inside Shuhe. It is a much quieter town than the other one. I actually prefer this town than Lijiang Old Town, due to its serenity and peace. To

The UK government is hoping to create eco-towns. Later in the spring of 2008, the government will announce a short list of 12-15 areas that will potentially host new eco-towns. From this list, as many as 10 towns will be constructed, focusing on renewable energy, zero-carbon buildings, and support for local communities and local businesses. While they havent decided where these towns will be yet, they have a great example in Cambourne already up and running.

One step forward, two steps back. This weekend was yet another reminder at how much I don't like really small towns. At least not when I'm still this young. I think very small towns are probably the best for people with no children, just starting out in life and want a cheaper home and lot but commute to the city for work, couples that have small infants and toddlers, and those approaching

Northwest of Boston, Littleton voters approved the program last spring, and Andover residents will consider the measure this year. Belmont has formed a committee to study the idea.

Buying property in a small town seems to be in vogue in the UK a national daily newspaper has named several of the UK top towns in which to live.
Small towns have become more and more popular for real estate investors in recent years. One reason is the value that these locales offer, providing more home for the purchase price than can be found in or near the larger cities. Another reason for their increasing popularity is the better schools that smaller towns provide for families. This is an important concern for those who have school-aged children, and many smaller towns have very good schools.
Warum exiliert die britische NME-Sekte eigentlich immer noch jeden Monat in Röhrenjeans gezwängte Krebspatienten im Endstadium auf das europäische Festland? “The band we have been waiting for since Oasis went to seed!” titelte die Meinungsmacherpresse im Vorfeld über die Coventry’er Britpop-Band The Enemy.

The Arizona RepublicJun. 13, 2006 03:53 PM BUMBLE BEE, Ariz. All that's left in this dusty town once known for its gold-filled creek is an empty school house, a couple of ranches, a diner, a gift shop and the legend of a swarm of angry bees that supposedly stung early settlers and gave Bumble Bee its name. With a population of just 10, this spot about 60 miles north of Phoenix is one of dozens of Arizona towns with quirky names left over by early settlers.Check a state map and you'll spot towns such as Why, Happy Jack, Inspiration, Tombstone, Snowflake, Arsenic Tubs, Two Guns, Friendly Corner or Surprise. __________________________________________________________________________It is easy to forget what the world was like in the early 1940s. I went out in the dark to get the Columbus Dispatch off the icy driveway this morning to read about Youngstown in the Columbus Dispatch series about Ohio’s cities. After reading the article the old fashioned way I realized I would not have a link to the Dispatch story until I can find it online anyway…
It’s almost there… the Dispatch has put it on the series page. The entire series On The Brink: Can Ohio’s big cities be saved? starts out:
“Ohio’s cities, as we have historically known them, are dead. Forget the past. Except for Columbus, Ohio’s big cities have endured vast population and job losses. “
It says “Day 7 - Youngstown
Saturday, Dec. 08, 2007″
No link to the article online yet…. but the slideshow of the history and the video interview with the mayor are online. I am about “old pictured out” on the seventh day of the series. I like old photographs but old pictures don’t
We thought that we’d have a go at stocking up in one of the border towns near here that used to be a dutyfree town ie one that sold all the dutyfree stuff that you get in the airports and whatnot.
Although “dutyfree” has gone, at least between European countries, none of the supermarkets in that town seems to have moved on at all. They still concentrate almost entirely on what were the former dutyfree items so you get a massive selection of drink, perfumes and tobacco and very little else.
I suspect that they survive on that mixture simply because ot the habit of the locals to shop in the “dutyfree” has carried on long after the dutyfree aspects have gone. If that’s the case, it would seem that the town only has a long slow decline in its future.

Straight from Boracay, I proceeded to the Sarabia Manor Hotel to check-in and wait for the vehicles from City Hall to pass by for me. We were off to the airport to meet the other members of the Heritage Conservation Society who arrived yesterday. And we went there in style, breezing through Iloilo's rush hour traffic with four motorcycle escorts. Hehe!As soon as they arrived (their flight was two hours delayed), we went straight to Robinsons for the Opening Cocktails of the 2nd Philippine Towns and Cities Seminar hosted by Mayor Jerry Trenas. The night wasn't over since after that, I went to Smallville to meet up with the Ateneo alumni in Iloilo and my SSEAYP batchmate Councilor Winwin Sanchez.Today, we had the seminar at the Sarabia Manor Hotel. I was emcee for the day. Here is the manifesto we drafted at the end of the seminar. We hope each LGU would adopt this as a provincial, city or municipal resolution:Manifesto for Heritage Conservation in Philippine Towns and CitiesThe 1987 C
I noted in an article published today at National Review Online about Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf's declaration of a state of emergency that the move makes it more likely that Pakistan will lose territory to militants by over-extending the police and military. Pakistani security forces are now charged not just with defending the country against militants but also clamping down on peaceful demonstrators, journalists, human rights activists, and lawyers. It is not difficult for Islamic militants...(read more)

Join us at "Philippine Towns and Cities: Reflections of the Past, Lessons for the Future" on November 9, 2007 at the Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center, 101 General Luna Street, Iloilo City. The main objective of this seminar series is to enhance civic engagement with local governments units so the Heritage Conservation Society (HCS) can inform and guide them on the proper care and utilization of a valuable asset — built heritage resources. The first seminar was held last 8 November 2006, at the Development Academy of the Philippines, Pasig City.In our towns and cities, wanton real estate speculation and over-construction are often mistaken for modernization when in fact these exert devastating pressure on the historic and cultural core of many of our human settlements. As a result, a valuable economic resource – built heritage — is left to deteriorate or is thoughtlessly demolished in the name of progress. Concerted effort is imperative to protect heritage resources becaus
I've started a new blog about the lesser known small towns of America. In Google Earth and Maps I've always been fascinated by the small towns of America that I've never heard of before - and there are quite a lot of them. Most Europeans would have heard of Kansas City or Tulsa, but very few , if any, would know about ,Cape Girardeau, Benton or Olney.
The format of the blog is a simple idea -
This evening I wanted to talk about a young British band called, The Enemy. The Enemy come from Coventry in the West Midlands, and formed in 2005. They consist of Tom Clarke on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Liam Watts on Drums, and Andy Hopkins on Bass Guitar. The band play a mixture of attitude filled Rock and Roll, high energy Punk, and Pop hooks. They have swiftly risen to a position of being one of the UK's brightest young bands who look set to be the next big thing. The band are very proud of their home city, Coventry, dedicated their debut to the people of coventry, and signing it with the phrase "While we sing together, we will never lose".The Enemy's debut album is entitled "We'll Live and Die in These Towns" and has just recently been released in July 2007. The album has received rave reviews, even going to number 1 in the official UK album charts. Although being young, the band sound well beyond their years, with a really confident sound. The band will be on tour during September

Yesterday I spoke about how fast Kennesaw was growing. Not only are they growing fast, but Kennesaw, according to Family Circle Magazine, is a great place for families. In fact, Family Circle thinks Kennesaw is one of the top 10 towns in America for families.
“We set out to find communities across the country that combine big-city opportunities with suburban charm, locations that offer an ideal blend of affordable houses, good jobs, top-rated schools, wide-open spaces, and a lot less stress. Here are the results of Family Circle’s extensive research: Perfect places to call home.”
If you would like to start looking for a home or are interested in Kennesaw real estate at all, please give me a call.
Corp Watch has a great article that looks at the effects of NAFTA in the border towns of Mexico. The results of this agreement have definitely been mixed, at best. “In the town of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, close to the U.S. border, two streets intersect: one is called Progreso (Progress) and the other is Fabrica (Factory). They are aptly named streets because they are thoroughfares that only house manufacturing plants called maquiladoras - giant mall sized buildings ringed with fences and with guardhouses posted out front. There are no houses or shops here – indeed, the sidewalks on Progreso and Fabrica are empty, and the only noise that can be heard during a workday are the trucks that drop off supplies and pick up finished goods.”It goes on...“Some of the factories belong to well-known companies like Caterpillar or Sony, others to less well-known companies like Delphi. Early every morning at the beginning of the workday, special buses arrive from specific neighborhoods carrying
Buying a house has become an out of reach task for most middleclass families. People save a little surplus money to invest in real estate but all in vain. They find nothing else except the news of property prices going through the roof. Considering small Indian cities and towns, it makes sense to imagine a lavishing life in metros especially when you have the resources. But, is the real estate boom taking place only in metros?
A fast flourishing economy and booming service sector have brought a lot of modifications including an increase in income and purchasing power in smaller towns. Also, the requirement to keep costs under lens is encouraging several corporates to check out ‘B’ cities.
Taking a view at boomtowns of tomorrow, the data for India’s emerging growth centres has come up with 15 cities. They all enjoy low real estate cost, large availability of land for development, big workforce, and increasing quality of life.
There are certain key parameters to judge the growth
Do you hate small towns? I'm starting to. No Pizza Hut in town, really sucks! I'm craving a nice fatty Pizza Hut special and nearest one is 30 or more miles away. Also being in a small town everything seems to shut down at 5pm, it's like the town flips the sign to closed.Ya know, if I had the money to open up a delivery fast food joint, I could probably make a killing in this town. Oh well, word of warning, if you tend to be the lazy type at times, avoid the small towns! No delivery, no pizza joints, lends itself for a boring night.Time to raid the fridge!
In a victory for common-sense, the Leinster Branch has scheduled the Remax Provincial Towns Cup for this Sunday. With the Leinster Provincial leagues not complete, clubs will be very much focused on the Towns Cup, one of the oldest competitions in Irish rugby comprising the majority of Junior Clubs in the Leinster area. The usual slew of Division One clubs will fancy their chances, with Naas, Navan and last years winners Tullamore all fancying their chances. The stand-out tie for this writer is Navan's visit to Division Two runners-up Wicklow - on a hard pitch, when they can spin it wide, Wicklow are a match for anyone.
