A good fraction of the comments I received in response to that post centered on that one brief reference. This probably shouldn’t have surprised me;

Buying property in a small town seems to be in vogue in the UK a national daily newspaper has named several of the UK top towns in which to live. Small towns have become more and more popular for real estate investors in recent years. One reason is the value that these locales offer, providing more home for the purchase price than can be found in or near the larger cities. Another reason for their increasing popularity is the better schools that smaller towns provide for families. This is an important concern for those who have school-aged children, and many smaller towns have very good schools.

They still concentrate almost entirely on what were the former dutyfree items so you get a massive selection of drink, perfumes and tobacco and very little else. I suspect that they survive on that mixture simply because ot the habit of the locals to shop in the “dutyfree” has carried on long after the dutyfree aspects have gone. If that’s the case, it would seem that the town only has a long slow decline in its future.

Manifesto for Heritage Conservation in Philippine Towns and Cities
Straight from Boracay, I proceeded to the Sarabia Manor Hotel to check-in and wait for the vehicles from City Hall to pass by for me. We were off to the airport to meet the other members of the Heritage Conservation Society who arrived yesterday. And we went there in style, breezing through Iloilo's rush hour traffic with four motorcycle escorts. Hehe!As soon as they arrived (their flight was two hours delayed), we went straight to Robinsons for the Opening Cocktails of the 2nd Philippine Towns and Cities Seminar hosted by Mayor Jerry Trenas. The night wasn't over since after that, I went to Smallville to meet up with the Ateneo alumni in Iloilo and my SSEAYP batchmate Councilor Winwin Sanchez.Today, we had the seminar at the Sarabia Manor Hotel. I was emcee for the day. Here is the manifesto we drafted at the end of the seminar. We hope each LGU would adopt this as a provincial, city or municipal resolution:Manifesto for Heritage Conservation in Philippine Towns and CitiesThe 1987 C

Militants Capture Two Towns in Pakistan's Swat Tribal Agency
I noted in an article published today at National Review Online about Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf's declaration of a state of emergency that the move makes it more likely that Pakistan will lose territory to militants by over-extending the police and military. Pakistani security forces are now charged not just with defending the country against militants but also clamping down on peaceful demonstrators, journalists, human rights activists, and lawyers. It is not difficult for Islamic militants...(read more)

Register now for the 2nd Philippine Towns and Cities Seminar
Join us at "Philippine Towns and Cities: Reflections of the Past, Lessons for the Future" on November 9, 2007 at the Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center, 101 General Luna Street, Iloilo City. The main objective of this seminar series is to enhance civic engagement with local governments units so the Heritage Conservation Society (HCS) can inform and guide them on the proper care and utilization of a valuable asset — built heritage resources. The first seminar was held last 8 November 2006, at the Development Academy of the Philippines, Pasig City.In our towns and cities, wanton real estate speculation and over-construction are often mistaken for modernization when in fact these exert devastating pressure on the historic and cultural core of many of our human settlements. As a result, a valuable economic resource – built heritage — is left to deteriorate or is thoughtlessly demolished in the name of progress. Concerted effort is imperative to protect heritage resources becaus

New blog - Towns of America
I've started a new blog about the lesser known small towns of America. In Google Earth and Maps I've always been fascinated by the small towns of America that I've never heard of before - and there are quite a lot of them. Most Europeans would have heard of Kansas City or Tulsa, but very few , if any, would know about ,Cape Girardeau, Benton or Olney. The format of the blog is a simple idea -

We'll Live and Die in These Towns
This evening I wanted to talk about a young British band called, The Enemy. The Enemy come from Coventry in the West Midlands, and formed in 2005. They consist of Tom Clarke on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Liam Watts on Drums, and Andy Hopkins on Bass Guitar. The band play a mixture of attitude filled Rock and Roll, high energy Punk, and Pop hooks. They have swiftly risen to a position of being one of the UK's brightest young bands who look set to be the next big thing. The band are very proud of their home city, Coventry, dedicated their debut to the people of coventry, and signing it with the phrase "While we sing together, we will never lose".The Enemy's debut album is entitled "We'll Live and Die in These Towns" and has just recently been released in July 2007. The album has received rave reviews, even going to number 1 in the official UK album charts. Although being young, the band sound well beyond their years, with a really confident sound. The band will be on tour during September

      Small Towns....
You grew up in a small town in Iowa if; You can name everyone you graduated with. You know what 4-H is. You went to parties at a pasture, barn, gravel pit, or in the middle of a dirt road. On Monday you could always tell who was at the party because of the scratches on their legs from running through the woods when the party was busted, see #6. You used to "drag" main. You said the "F" word and

      Border Towns and NAFTA
Corp Watch has a great article that looks at the effects of NAFTA in the border towns of Mexico. The results of this agreement have definitely been mixed, at best. “In the town of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, close to the U.S. border, two streets intersect: one is called Progreso (Progress) and the other is Fabrica (Factory). They are aptly named streets because they are thoroughfares that only house manufacturing plants called maquiladoras - giant mall sized buildings ringed with fences and with guardhouses posted out front. There are no houses or shops here – indeed, the sidewalks on Progreso and Fabrica are empty, and the only noise that can be heard during a workday are the trucks that drop off supplies and pick up finished goods.”It goes on...“Some of the factories belong to well-known companies like Caterpillar or Sony, others to less well-known companies like Delphi. Early every morning at the beginning of the workday, special buses arrive from specific neighborhoods carrying

Chandigarh Sets Examples for Other Emerging Boom Towns
Buying a house has become an out of reach task for most middleclass families. People save a little surplus money to invest in real estate but all in vain. They find nothing else except the news of property prices going through the roof. Considering small Indian cities and towns, it makes sense to imagine a lavishing life in metros especially when you have the resources.  But, is the real estate boom taking place only in metros? A fast flourishing economy and booming service sector have brought a lot of modifications including an increase in income and purchasing power in smaller towns. Also, the requirement to keep costs under lens is encouraging several corporates to check out ‘B’ cities. Taking a view at boomtowns of tomorrow, the data for India’s emerging growth centres has come up with 15 cities. They all enjoy low real estate cost, large availability of land for development, big workforce, and increasing quality of life. There are certain key parameters to judge the growth

      I hate small towns sometimes
Do you hate small towns? I'm starting to. No Pizza Hut in town, really sucks! I'm craving a nice fatty Pizza Hut special and nearest one is 30 or more miles away. Also being in a small town everything seems to shut down at 5pm, it's like the town flips the sign to closed.Ya know, if I had the money to open up a delivery fast food joint, I could probably make a killing in this town. Oh well, word of warning, if you tend to be the lazy type at times, avoid the small towns! No delivery, no pizza joints, lends itself for a boring night.Time to raid the fridge!

      Leinster Provincial Towns Cup
In a victory for common-sense, the Leinster Branch has scheduled the Remax Provincial Towns Cup for this Sunday. With the Leinster Provincial leagues not complete, clubs will be very much focused on the Towns Cup, one of the oldest competitions in Irish rugby comprising the majority of Junior Clubs in the Leinster area. The usual slew of Division One clubs will fancy their chances, with Naas, Navan and last years winners Tullamore all fancying their chances. The stand-out tie for this writer is Navan's visit to Division Two runners-up Wicklow - on a hard pitch, when they can spin it wide, Wicklow are a match for anyone.
