The revelation that Iran is training thousands of Shia terrorists inside Iran for operations inside Iraq is likely to markedly increase support on Capitol Hill for tougher U.S. sanctions against Western businesses conducting business with the regime. Business Times - 23 Apr 2008 Bracing for tougher times ahead ECONOMISTS read in the Monetary Authority of Singapore's (MAS) surprise decision two weeks ago to strengthen the Sing dollar an indication that inflationary concerns loomed large over downside growth risks, even as the global outlook grows cloudy with recession in the air. While the Singapore economy got off to a robust start (though the final first-quarter growth may well be revised down from the 7.2 per cent flash estimate), gross domestic product (GDP) growth is widely expected to ease in the months ahead. The big question is - by how much, as the US economic downturn winds its way to Singapore and the rest of Asia. For now, the prognosis remains an optimistic 'minimal hit' scenario with regional resilience and demand expected

Microsoft was considered to have escaped lightly after the European Commission found it guilty in 2004 of bundling its media player software with Windows to the detriment of competition. It was ordered to sell a second version of Windows in Europe without its media player, but the new version was priced the same, few PC makers stocked it and the product effectively bombed in the market.People continued to buy the original version of Windows, complete with the media player, and the remedy did little to help Microsoft's rivals. With its fresh antitrust suit filed with the Commission this week, browser maker Opera Software is hoping for a tougher penalty to rein in what it sees as Microsoft's illegal bundling of its Internet Explorer (IE) browser with Windows. One legal expert said that this time around, Microsoft might not be so lucky."The landscape has changed quite a bit between Microsoft and the European Commission since the last ruling. The government of Shanghai has decided to impose heavier land and real estate taxes on land developers and commercial home owners, with the maximum tax amount of up to 30 yuan per square meters, which will take effect starting from the current taxable year from January to December. This is believed to be the first ever such strong move in the country that directly targets the skyrocketing commercial housing prices that, like in many other cities around the country, have not only made a big majority of urban residents becoming "housing slaves", but also shattered the dreams of many others in getting their houses on much affordable prices.

In Germany, after the recent open season on German citizens, they are finally beginning to realize (hopefully) that it's not a good idea to negotiate with kidnappers and pay ransom to hostage takers:
Following a string of kidnappings of German nationals, particularly in Afghanistan and Iraq, the government is reportedly discussing ways of implementing a tougher strategy in an apparent attempt to reduce the frequency of the seizures.
Because it is known that the German government - like those of Italy and France - is willing to pay ransoms, the "value" of German kidnap victims has risen in the Middle East, experts have acknowledged. Observers in the field say that ransom money often goes to finance weaponry for insurgents.
...
The German government is reportedly considering whether to abandon its approach and follow the US, British and Israeli policy of refusing to negotiate with kidnappers.

British officials believe that ransom payments by Britain's European partners endanger al

Japan is a step closer to having an ideal worker who won't complain in torrential rain or on slippery floors as a company unveiled a next-generation humanoid Thursday. Kawada Industries' HRP-3 Promet Mk-II, a 160-centimetre-tall (five feet, four inches) humanoid, walked on a slippery floor scattered with sand and held out its arms under a shower before media cameras.
"We have made a leap towards creating a humanoid that works in a real environment," the firm said in a joint statement with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.
The white robot, which wears a visor and has a passing resemblance to a "Star Wars" Imperial Stormtrooper, also used a screwdriver with its right hand while leaning forward on its left arm, balancing itself just like a human
EIFS stands for Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems. It is a synthetic exterior siding that looks like stucco, has been used on Oregon homes and businesses for years and has had its fair share of issues. Proposed Oregon House Bill 2112-B is an attempt by Oregon’s lawmakers to address those issues by severely restricting the use of EIFS and reinforcing the ban on earlier versions of the product.
The problem found with EIFS is that, if it’s not installed correctly, water can seep behind the siding. In a wet climate like Oregon’s this water has no way to dry out. The moisture stays, mold grows, and the claim is, it can make people sick and potentially damage the building. In addition, it can be a perfect environment for termites to tunnel behind if installed too close to the ground. Manufacturers say the updated versions of the product no longer have the same issues as before.
If you are considering buying a house with synthetic stucco on the exterior be sure to

The state Senate today took a step toward tightening the screws on underwriting loans that allow borrowers to differ principal or interest payments. SB 385, passed on a 33-1 vote, requires all state-licensed lenders and brokers to follow federal guidelines issued on Sept. 29, 2006. The bill still must face the Assembly and governor.
The key federal rule is that borrowers should be qualified based on their ability to make loan payments after an initial low "teaser" period ends on an interest-only or option ARM loan.

My favorite is the Shutup Tape… I’m going to buy 60 rolls… essential for my sanity when spending long periods of time with the bf.

Brewers manager Ned Yost broke his collarbone on Tuesday after tripping during a jog near Wrigley Field. While most people would be in pain and what not, Yost just pretended like nothing happened and went on to lead his team to victory afterwards. "I felt like an idiot," he said. Yost said he was finishing a run from Lake Michigan on Tuesday when his foot got caught in uneven pavement. He tried to balance himself but fell headfirst, injuring his right collarbone, bruising his hip and scraping his shin. He went to a hospital and a doctor recommended that Yost have his arm immobilized. Yost declined and returned to the park, where he guided the NL Central-leading Brewers past the Chicago Cubs 4-1. "The doctor wanted to put it in a sling," Yost said. "I'm fine, really. I didn't sleep [Tuesday night], but it wasn't like I was in pain." "I've never hit that hard before in my life," he said. "It's not a big deal. It's just whatever pain you can take. You put it out of yo
Teenage drivers in Illinois may soon face even tighter restrictions on their driving privileges. On March 27th, the Illinois Senate passed Senate Bill 172, which was sponsored by Senator John Cullerton, a Democrat from Chicago. The intention of the Bill is to restrict the conditions under which newer drivers are on the road, in order to reduce the number of fatalities among teenage drivers. The new laws would toughen the older version of restrictions placed on drivers within this age group. These changes would make the teenage driving laws and graduated license program in Illinois the strictest in the country.
