Morning Open Thread: Net Neutrality - Tough Talk, Tough Action?
Far be it from me to criticize Senators for talking tough, yet I can't help feeling skeptical: Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) stepped in front of a group of tech executives in Washington this morning to deliver a caffeinated and surprisingly sharp defense of network neutrality. Pledging to use "every ounce of my energy to protect network neutrality," Wyden had a message for ISPs who might be pondering new charges for various forms of access: "think twice." If ISPs start down that road, they might soon find that they lose key legal protections including "safe harbors" and tax freedom. As I said, I like it when Senators talk tough to corporations, especially if they are actually in the room. But consider the political realities. Congress has yet to pass a real net neutrality bill into law. This mea

It should come as no surprise that Governor Rick Perry’s newest appointments to the Texas Transportation Commission are pro-tollers, and that fur is already flying over the two appointments: The GOP governor’s support of private investment in public tollways as a key avenue for needed infrastructure is echoed by former aide Deirdre Delisi of Austin and a second appointee announced Wednesday, Bill Meadows of Fort Worth. Both appointees see private investment as an important part of the picture, though not all of it, and said they want to work with lawmakers. The Legislature has sought to curb such projects, alarmed the state would go too far in ceding control of Texas’ infrastructure. In other words, these two see no problem with sweet-heart deals like the CINTRA/Zachary p

As Tough as I Wanna Be
Grades always were easy for me in school. From the beginning I got satisfactories in all those important areas such as writing, reading and mathematics. Those turned to A's when actual grades were given, though I don't remember the demarcation. In fact, I seldom saw a B. By the eighth grade I took such things for granted. In fact, I was placed in an advanced math class in eighth grade, taking Algebra instead of waiting until 9th. I don't recall feeling particular special, and I don't recall being thought of as weird. As I said before, more than half the kids I started kindergarten with, I graduated with. We, by that point, had a pretty clear idea who were the smart ones, who not.Algebra went fine. In ninth grade we started geometry and I began to struggle. Struggle for me was simply frustr

      Schnauzer Logic: Tough crowd
Podcast: Schnauzer Logic Date: April 2, 2008 Title: Episode 65 Download the show: Episode 65 These Schnauzer Logic guest spots are bruising. At first, host Robin Goldstein greeted me with yards and yards of welcoming new-guest laughter, stoking my ego and sending me running for my copy of One Hundred and One Elephant Jokes to plan further hilarious interviews. By my seventh and latest appearance, however, the introductions had grown perfunctory, the silences following my punchlines leaden, dissatisfied, even threatening. Several regular members of the studio panel even failed to appear for my visit, citing "work" or "family" obligations. Always the trouper, I worked the room hard but my audience (including Sean Meehan and Ms. Pac-Man co-inventor Steve Golson) lay there like loxes,

The Dating Landscape is Tough for ALL Women
Last week I was listening to the Dr. Laura show on my drive home from work as I do every evening. Dr. Laura took a call from a young WW who was worried that she was “crazy” or “neurotic” because she desires to get married and have children. Upon further prompting, Dr. Laura wanted to know why she felt so anxious about wanting to get married and the young woman went on to explain that she didn’t have any good prospects lined up. However, her friends were trying to set her up on a date with a “really nice guy.” Again, Dr. Laura didn’t see why this should cause the young woman such anxiety. Finally, the girl got to the real crux of her dilemma ….the “really nice guy” drove a delivery truck for a living and didn’t have any plans to further advance himself. The young wom

Roy’s contention was that the decision would saw-off India’s competitive advantage in the business. Talking About Really Tough Subjects
Talking About Really Tough Subjects - Death, dying, illness. Why do we need to talk about that kind of thing?! There are some issues that we just don't want to talk about. Maybe we hide from them. Maybe we change the subject or avoid them. And sometimes these reactions in situations that can't be changed might be healthy. Denial and a wish not to talk can serve important purposes. And denial in the face of certain unchangeable situations may be a person's acceptable way of coping. I have found that the wish not to talk about death or dying may simply be the ill person's way of protecting the healthy person. More: continued here Other Review: Baby Frog Prince Costume (Apparel)

Consumers seek durability when shopping for tough cars
Consumers are finding vehicles able to withstand the daily demands of life in some unlikely places. The Honda showroom is one. There, buyers looking for reliable, safe vehicles with low repair costs and reports of problems will find the Odyssey. It ranked first on our list of most durable vehicles. The Honda Pilot, CRV, Civic and Accord also made the list. That’s no surprise, say industry experts. The Japanese automaker typically stands above the competition in quality and reliability surveys. “Honda builds an outstanding product,” says Dave Wurster, president of Vincentric, an automotive research company. “They are highly reliable, and they last a long time.
