German firm VW has pulled the wraps of its new high performance Touareg, the R50.The new range-topper features a tweaked version of the company's 5.0-litre V10 diesel that now pushes out 345bhp - and increase of 37bhp over the standard car. Even more impressive is the peak torque figure, which rises from 750 to 850Nm. As a result performance is blistering with the Touareg sprinting from standstill to 62mph in 6.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 146mph. Volkswagen has just made its new VW Touareg R50 world premiere  at the 2007 Australian International Motor Show. Developed by a team of specialists at Volkswagen Individual GmbH, the Volkswagen Touareg R50 is one of the most powerful SUVs in the world. While Volkswagen has yet to announce detailed specifications, it promises the R50 boasts “generous” increases on the 230kW of power and 750Nm of torque produced by the current V10 TDi model on which it is based.   Bigger wheels and tyres and tweaked suspension complete the high-performance package. After the facelift Volkswagen gave to the Touareg in January, the German tuner ABT made some impressive modifications to the SUV. The mods include a full bodykit with front spoiler lip, side skirts, fender extensions, rear wing, rear skirts and a 4-pipe exhaust system. The Touareg also got new 19, 20 or 22-inch alloy wheels. Volkswagen announced that they want to make an R version for their SUV, VW Touareg. After Golf R32 and Passat R36 it’s Touareg’s time to become a sports car. VW Touareg R could be named R50 and it will have for sure the same characteristic design elements of Golf R32 and Passat R36. The confirmed information presents the car with an V10 diesel engine of 4.9 litres and not one on gasoline, but the R-Touareg could have an W12 engine capable of 450HP. That would not be a smart move because it will be a serious competitor for Audi Q7 V12 TDI.

According to AutoTelegraaf, a loose-lipped V-dub employee spilled the beans that the German automaker is developing an R-badged high-performance version of the Touareg SUV. Unlike current gas-powered R variants such as the R32 Golf and upcoming R36 Passat, the R-badged Touareg will likely be based on the 4.9L V10 TDI model. Motor Authority reports that aftermarket tuners have gotten this engine to produce upwards of 625 ft-lbs. of torque and 365bhp, which bodes well for this SUV's potential. According to VW's naming convention, the new model will likely be called the R50. In terms of appearance, it's thought the R50 will resemble the R-line Touareg (shown) that can be built by outfitting your SUV with parts from the VW Individual customization program. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether this speculation includes the U.S. as a possible market for the R50. Currently, we're only promised the presence of the R32, which isn't even here yet, though you can preorder the 5000 earm
