The end of last week a lot of stories came out about the flooding situation in the Midwest, as well as the record setting pace for Tornadoes in 2008 and their connection to Global Warming. This week, the First State Bank in Parkersburg released surveillance video of the EF5 that devastated Parkersburg, Iowa. The video from above was recorded the evening of May 25 from the bank’s outside ATM camera. You can see the power of these storms. It just destroys this home.
On Monday, the same bank released interior surveillance [...]
Another week, another rumbling train of tornadoes that obliterates entire city blocks, smashing homes to their foundations and killing people even as they cower in their basements.
With the year not even half done, 2008 is already the deadliest tornado year in the United States since 1998 and seems on track to break the U.S. record [...]
How Tornadoes Formfrom the Storm EncyclopediaA tornado is a violently rotating column of air in contact with and extending between a cloud (often a thunderstorm cloud) and the surface of the earth. Winds in most tornadoes blow at 100 mph or less, but in the most violent, and least frequent tornadoes, wind speeds can exceed 250 mph.Tornadoes, often nicknamed "twisters," typically track along the gr
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (May 24) - Authorities checking on a car stranded in a field Saturday morning found two people killed by a powerful storm that raked the state a day earlier with at least 17 tornadoes.
First of all, I feel like I need to explain that the only time it usually rains in Southern California is in the winter...between the months of November and February. We hardly ever get thunderstorms but it does happen occasionally. Well today...and remember it is almost JUNE, we had tornadoes, hail, heavy rain, flooding and mudslides. I witnessed my day go from sunny to dark, followed by lighte
AFP - US authorities rushed aid to disaster areas Monday after a series of tornadoes tore across the United States, killing at least 22 people, shattering homes and businesses, and leaving tens of thousands without power.
What's with all the tornadoes? Twenty-five documented tornadoes rip through the the U.S. in a matter of two days leaving much damage and at least seven dead and are still continuing through the rest of the week in the southern U.S. Craziness!Link - Sky News
Monday my state was devastated by 6 tornadoes, the most devastating in Suffolk less than an hour from where I live. At first, it did not register in my mind that the tornadoes had actually happened. When my mom told me about the tornado warning I just blew her off and told her that tornadoes happened in Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas and never in Virginia because we received hurricanes. Guess I was wrong. It was also pretty depressing to hear all the news stations reporting on how they were still waiting to hear the death toll, like deaths were the most important aspect. I was so relieved to hear that no one had died (as far as I know of right now because my mom said there are still people missing). One guy tried to outrace the storm by driving. He did not have on a seat belt and his

Tornadoes kill dozens and sometimes hundreds of people every year in the United States. Warning systems have improved dramatically, however, so some of the deadliest tornadoes were recorded many decades ago. In some cases, a single tornado caused hundreds of deaths. Following are the 10 deadliest on record, based on data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)10. The Waco Tornado(May 11 1953) in Texas destroyed 200 business buildings and damaged another 400, including a six-story furniture store that collapsed.Deaths: 114 ? Injuries: 597 ? F-Scale F5. This is not what anyone expected yesterday. The photo on the left is from AP. Check out their story.I was on my way home from a Pampered Chef party and notices lot of lightening and some thunder. It just seemed like a spring thunderstorm. When we turned on the TV the news was reporting that something was going on at the dome where they were playing the SEC basketball tournament. It was something alright. As the night progressed, the news crews got the cameras rolling and there had been a "probable" tornado. Nobody would call it until the National Weather Center did their assessment. It didn't really take a meteorologist to determine that, in fact, Atlanta had a tornado hit downtown. When they finally confirmed the tornado, it was an EF-2 with 130 MPH winds. For those of you reading who know
Creating and practicing a family disaster plan could be the difference between safety and vulnerability. You need to know the emergency management procedures at your work, the kid’s school, the daycare, and maybe even the nursing home.

NASA scientists have developed a new climate model that indicates that the most violent severe storms and tornadoes may become more common as Earth’s climate warms.
Previous climate model studies have shown that heavy rainstorms will be more common in a warmer climate, but few global models have attempted to simulate the strength of updrafts in these storms. The model developed at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies by researchers Tony Del Genio, Mao-Sung Yao, and Jeff Jonas is the first to successfully simulate the observed difference in strength between land and ocean storms and is the first to estimate how the strength will change in a warming climate, including “severe thunderstorms” that also occur with significant wind shear and produce damaging winds at the ground.
This information can be derived from the temperatures and humidities predicted by a climate computer model, according to the new study published on August 17 in the American Geophysical

There's someone I care for that lives in a state in 'tornado alley'. Since moving here, when ever there's a tornado that hits, they only announce that the US was hit. Today, they said 3 states in America were hit...
