Whew! What a day.Soooo, in spite of waking up super early to get into Barneys for their 10am opening time....I didn't end up making it there until 20 minutes after 10...I am not so good at mornings. Things were pretty calm when I entered the store, there were a few reporters out front asking questions of shoppers who had already been in and out...I heard some talk of hype and exorbitant pricing...cashing in, etc.When the elevator opened on the 7th floor, there was definitely a pronounceable din...and an energy buzz. The Kate Moss collection was clustered around a small space in the middle of the room comprised (at this point at least) of 7 or so racks that were being attacked in a gently chaotic manner. Supermodel Kate Moss has teamed up with UK high street fashion store Top Shop to launch a special collection inspired and designed by her - Kate Moss for TopShop.
This follows in the footsteps of other celebrities - Madonna and Stella McCartney to name two. It promises lots of attention and sales for Topshop and probably marks a comeback of sorts for Kate Moss who we last heard had been dropped for many advertising campaigns due to substance abuse.
This collection premiered yesterday May 1 2007 amid much hype in London. I took a browse of the stuff over on Topshop’s website. Now remember, Topshop in the UK is pretty much a high street brand, unlike in Malaysia where its considered semi-high end due to its outrageous pricing.
In England, the prices are considered pretty normal high street which translated to Malaysia would mean Padini or Giordano. The only difference is that we won’t get Kate Moss for Padini, that’s for sure!

The much-anticipated collection which drops May 1st at the flagship Oxford Circus London store (always a madhouse, can't imagine what it will be like May 1st) will be available a week later here in NYC at Barneys Co-op. Kate herself will make an appearance on the day of. I am sure this will be a big scene, I really do want a few of the pieces though. I suppose I will brave the masses. Oh and I keep hearing rumours of the opening of a Topshop here in the city later in the year. In news that makes me full of giddy hurrah, roaring lady power, Beth Ditto, lead singer of The Gossip, has refused to play a round of promotional in-store appearances for Topshop in the UK. Her deal? Why play and sing in a place that doesn’t sell anything she could actually wear? Ditto explains, “I don’t really know why they want The Gossip…I don’t understand because if they saw me in the street they’d never give me the time of day.” She has called on the retail giant to invite her to design for larger sizes, explaining, “I don’t want just your money or the cred of hanging out with Kate Moss, which is fine, but it’s not want I want in life. I want more. I want what she gets.”
