Seguir leyendo... >>

Tony Blair caught out as fare dodger!

The press have had a field day, pointing out the ironies of it all. But I like the overseas press the best, especially The Hindu. This is what they think of "the 54-year-old mega-rich Middle East envoy"!Tony Blair may have earned millions since leaving office last year but when it came to paying his own train fare, the former British Prime Minister was found short of cash. The way forward, he argues, is not to try to cut a deal on an agreement first: "For the Palestinian state to succeed, you need to start getting the reality of that state on the ground before political negotiations can be meaningful. Afghanistan has always been the forgotten war, if it can be called a war at all. Ever since the US decided its real fight was a few countries to the south-west Afghanistan actually seems more like a deadly stalemate. Increasingly, that stalemate has become intolerable to the Nato countries fighting in the country. Clearly, at this rate it is a no-win situation. What to do? Canada requests special UN envoy for Afghanistan makes a lot of sense, someone “along the lines of former British prime minister Tony Blair’s mission in the Middle East” — although how much have we heard from him lately.  Condoleezza Rice’s peace initiative, due to take place within the next two months, already seems dead in the water. But the request for the special envoy, if nothing else, is a useful gauge to test how seriously the UN is taking the theatre and could the envoy prove useful at recruiting other countries to get involved, especially Muslim countries which so far have t

Will Blair help or hurt in his new job as an envoy? That's what this JTA article is asking, but I think the answers can pretty much be figured out:Tony Blair's frequent calls for the need to create a Palestinian state and his vital support for the Iraq war raise major questions for officials in Jerusalem and Arab capitals.WASHINGTON (JTA) – Tony Blair brings a lot to his new job as a peace envoy: His hands-on experience as British prime minister in dealing with Middle East issues, the confidence President Bush places in him as a loyal supporter of the Iraq war, a long-held view that resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is vital to stabilizing the region. The question in this case is whether "a lot" constitutes useful experience or debilitating baggage.Answer: he will only bring baggage that we in Israel will have to carry as our horrid burden. And I don't agree at all with this article that says that Blair is leaving a legacy of support for Israel. Not at all.

      Thoughts on Tony Blair
Today, Tony Blair hands over Number 10 Downing Street to Gordon Brown. Blair has served 10 years. Blair has been at the helm during 2 major tragedies. The first was the untimely death of Princess Diana. Tony Blair gained immense popularity following Diana’s death by healing the public’s perception of the Queen following that tragedy. In terms of public relations, his handling of the Queen and Diana’s death was probably his greatest victory. The next tragedy, 9-11 and the subsequent war in Iraq, did irrepairable harm to Tony Blair’s stature. Tony Blair not only concurred with George Bush’s overt deceptions that led to the war, he even joined Bush in pushing the disatrous agenda to topple Saddam Hussein. In light of Blair’s role in Iraq, I believe it is a huge mistake picking Blair to lead the peace effort in the Middle East as the envoy for the US, Russia, the UN and the EU. Not only has Blair contributed to the bedlam in the Middle East, Brita

      Tony Blair resigns
A decade after he was first elected to office, Blair has now announced his resignation. I wish I could credit him more than I can, but unfortunately, there's a few little things to his record that simply cannot be ignored, such as how just a few months ago, as reported by Melanie Phillips:Last February, Tony Blair suggested that the British government might be prepared to do business with ‘the more sensible elements of Hamas’ in order to restore negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. This was about as rational as suggesting in 1942, say, that one might do business with the more sensible elements of the SS. But hey — this is Britain. It does appeasement. Produce a sect of fanatics who are totally beyond reason and bent on wiping out every last Jew and American, defeating the west and taking over the world and Britain will be beating a path to their door, cap in hand. Tony Blair - was he really a lawyer?
I'm sure I've questioned before on this blog whether Tony Blair could ever have been a lawyer. He appears to have come unscathed through both legal training and his time in politics with utter disregard for both democracy and the rule of law.Today he gave a speech complaining (again) the judges had thwarted his desire to deport Libyans back to Libya. They were terror suspects and he wanted to deport them. He produced a 'memorandum of understanding' with Gaddafi that deportees wouldn't suffer any kind of inhumane treatment in Libya, so where's the problem. The problems are these:We have treaty obligations to not deport people to countries where they will suffer inhuman treatment. Tony Blair probably thought it was a good idea to sign up to that treaty because it looked good. However a treaty is supposed to be a solemn undertaking. And the treaty applies to everyone. That is the point of the law: it applies to everyone. It is the law of the land. The government has deported p

Tony Blair To Hone Scrounging Skills
A few weeks ago, we had the introduction of the verb to “blair”, meaning to inveigle yourself into another person’s goodwill in order to seduce them into giving you something. This, of course, was a natural outcome from people noticing that the Blair family seemed to sponge holidays from the rich and famous and that Cherie Booth, Tony Blair’s wife, even charged hefty fees for charity functions when other people actually gave their time freely for the sake of, er, charity. The Blairs, it seems, could never be embarrassed into not turning a quick buck wherever they saw the opportunity. The chance to pocket the rewards of “a nice little earner” would always outweigh the idea that it might be undignified and lack decorum. In that sense, they are the ideal standard-bearers of New Britain’s new chav culture. How on earth could you expect ordinary people not to be grasping and shallow when they had such paradigms? Anyway, in preparation for having t

For anyone who has ever wondered whether Tony Blair should have followed another career more commensurate with his talents, there is now the chance to help make him number one at something, as the chances of his being able to do this by his own devices become ever slimmer. Tony Blair used to be in one of those infinitely forgettable college bands, which was called Ugly Rumours.  A spoof of the band has been brought together and they have released a record which they would like to see get to Number 1 to embarrass Number 10. The group wants to do “more than embarrass Tony Blair”. A spokesman said: “We want his war mongering in Iraq and Afghanistan to end immediately. We want to help stop plans to attack Iran. We think Tony Blair should be held accountable for war crimes. “Getting the spoof Blair record into the Top 10 can play a part in publicising the anti-war message, which represents the view of the majority in this country who oppose the Bush-Blair wars. Tony Blair's Sacrificial Gamble
It is always good to hear what other people think about things. By listening to what other people say, we gain a new perspective and gain the chance to adjust our own opinions according to the new information we have acquired. Many people, certainly in New Britain, had assumed that Tony Blair took a gamble on going to war with Iraq. It had worked for Mrs Thatcher with the Falklands and it stood a chance of making him look good. It could make him appear as a world statesman and it might provide a big legacy.  All the evidence, when adjusted according to this overriding need, looked like going to war would be a good thing. A chance well worth taking. However, there is another way to look at all this, as American presidential hopeful, John McCain lets us know:- SEATTLE (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain said Friday that British Prime Minister Tony Blair has sacrificed his career to support the Iraq war, and the Arizona senator acknowledged that he could face the same fate

Some of the government officials said that Blair will tell the House of Commons during the meeting that 3,000 British troops will be leaving Iraq by the end of 2007, and that as of now Blair is not expected to mention when the rest of the troops will be coming home. The US National Security Council spokesman, Gordon Johndroe, said that Bush views the British soldier cutbacks as “a sign of success.”  Gordon also said that “the president is grateful for the support of the British Forces in the past and into the future,” and that “while the United Kingdom is maintaining a robust force in southern Iraq, we’re pleased that conditions in Basra have improved sufficiently that they are able to transition more control to the

      Tony Blair's Oasis Mirage
The heady days of ten years ago, when Tony Blair and his New Labour Project could count on the plaudits of celebrities and pop stars seems to be vanishing like a mirage. A month or two ago, Cliff Richard stopped offering his mansion for the Blairs to blair a free holiday and now, Noel Gallagher of Oasis fame is refusing to sing from Tony Blair’s songsheet. The BBC has this:- He said: “David Cameron is no different from Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown is no different from David Cameron. “They’re all cut from the [same] cloth and it annoys me that the biggest political icon from the last 30 years has been Margaret Thatcher, someone who tried to destroy the working class… it freaks me out you know. “So I don’t really think there’s anything left to vote for. That’s why people don’t vote… why people would rather vote for celebrity talent shows than would vote for politics.” … He added: “When the Labour Party go

Tony Blair's Legacy: Harmony And Accord
The comedian Jackie Mason has a joke which goes something like this. “There is no reciprocity. Men love women. Women love children. Children love hamsters”. It could be said that employment generally follows a similar pattern. Bosses like to get as much work out of their employees as possible for the smallest amount of money. Workers like to work as little as possible for the largest amount of money they can earn. It is a system of mutual exploitation. Tony Blair’s legacy will be that he brought harmony and accord to the relationship between politicians and the people. People now distrust, hate and despise politicians: politicians distrust, hate and despise the people. Technorati Tags: politics of hate, mutual distrust, failure, contemptShare This

What if Tony Blair went to Prison?
Not so long ago I watched a great TV program that focused on Tony Blair being indicted for war crimes, the build up to the program was how Tony's popularity started to dwindle in which case he had no choice but to stand down for Prime Minister I would like to see the U.S do something just like that about George Bush and see how far thay would be prepared to take the program, in the Channel 4 program, Tony Blair was played by Robert Lindsay, but I do not know who would play a good George Bush do you?

Tony Blair: How Did It Go So Wrong?
Tony Blair was looking to change the world last year through social and possibly genetic engineering. The state was going to have to intervene to make people uniform and subservient. The idea that variety in humankind might be a good thing would be wiped away in his brave new world of standardized human economic units. So, what happened to this wonderful initiative from September 2006? What would the consequences have been for Our Dear Leader had this policy been applied to him? The text is borrowed from smalldeadanimals.com, as the original site is not currently working:- LONDON - British Prime Minister Tony Blair said yesterday the state should intervene early - possibly even before birth - to stop the children of problem families growing up into troublemakers. One think-tank said the idea, the latest step in Blair’s drive against crime and anti-social behaviour in Britain, verged on “genetic determinism”. In his first interview since returning from a Caribbean hol

      Tony Blair's Media Circus Collapses
Martin Jacques, writing in The Guardian, has an interesting piece about the general moral tone and methods and manipulations of political expediency which have characterised Tony Blair and New Labour, both in and out of government. Then there was New Labour in office. From the outset, it invested an extraordinary importance in the media and in the consequent need to control the news agenda. Advisers - which almost invariably meant spinmeisters - were liberally dispersed around the ministries. The civil service, another potential check on overweaning government power, found itself relegated and demeaned by Blair’s political appointees. Figures such as Peter Mandelson and Alastair Campbell, masters of the dark arts, emerged as decisive figures within New Labour. The message was everything, substance a pliant handmaiden, truth the first casualty. Spin, of course, held the people in contempt. If the media could be squared, then so could the public. It was the antithesis of accountabi

      Tony Blair: Observe This
The Observer Leader online today seems to say that if New Labour has been selling dodgy peerages it would be all right because other governments have done it in the past. The police should either bring charges or shut up, because the longer the investigation goes on, the worse it looks for Tony Blair and his chums and it might also frighten the horses. The problem with articles of this type, which seem to be flimsily disguised apologies for Our Dear Leader, is that they suddenly backfire.  Here are just a few comments made at the above site:- From AngusMcGlumpher I couldn’t really believe that this leader was so poorly thought out so I read it again. So let’s get this clear. Amongst the points you make are: 1. People have been selling honours for years, so no justification for a prosecution now. 2. The police shouldn’t investigate crime when the investigation might damage democracy. 3. Old laws are less important than new ones. 4. We should stop investigating a possi

Tony Blair Not Pretty Straight Guy
This is an extact from the interview between John Humphrys and Tony Blair on the Radio 4 Today Programme, which I have taken from the Guardian:  JH: Ten years ago, we spoke after the first scandal - if that’s what it was - of the formula one affair. We did a television interview and you said to me - and the quote has been used many, many times since then; you’ll know where I’m going - “people think I’m a pretty straight kind of guy”. They don’t think that now, do they? TB: Well, you know, I thought you might ask me that and I thought about how I should answer it and, actually, I had the same thing put to me during the course of the last election, when people were calling me a liar and a war criminal and so on. Maybe this is how I have changed over the years as well. I said then, during the election campaign, and I would say now, I am not going to beg for my character in front of anyone. People can make up their mind about me, according to what

      Tony Blair: The Busking Legacy
A couple of weeks ago, I was going to write something about the fact that it might have been better for the world if Tony Blair had stuck to his childhood dream of being a musician. Assuming he had devoted all his energies and talents to playing the guitar, one could have predicted that by now he would be living in a suburban bedsit, playing his riffs to an audience of one; perhaps sometimes being asked to fill in for a local pub band when the real guitarist was sick. He could bore the locals at his pub with tales of how he almost made it to the bigtime and they would occasionally buy him a drink to shut him up and he would stagger home alone and cry himself to sleep. The moral being that he would have found his natural level in life. He would not have been propelled to a position above his station or abilities and the world might have been happier and safer if he had remained sunk in oblivion. Ha! Ha! The problem is that events are now conspiring to bring this about after the interl

Tony Blair: We Love You, Please Don't Go!
Belfast Today, following on from a lot of news reports, has a succinct comment about Tony Blair clinging on embarrassingly to an illusion of power when everyone is mocking him, mainly behind his back, but increasingly openly:- Only 26 per cent of voters, according to a latest poll for the Daily Telegraph, are satisfied with the Blair record as Prime Minister, a dramatic slump when compared with 66 per cent in early 1998. For all his unpopularity, a stubborn Blair is still adamantly refusing to hand over the reins until later in the year, probably after the May elections to the English district councils and the devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales. … Most of Tony Blair’s political troubles stem from within Labour ranks, from backbench MPs totally dismissive of his leadership and who have made their minds up that their woes will not end until they have seen the back of a Prime Minister whose authority is so derided. Labour policies may not change dramatically with G

Is Tony Blair Vicky Pollard In Drag?
There has been some speculation about what Tony Blair might do when he eventually steps down from his role as Prime Minister. Obviously, most people think he will chase the money on the lecture circuit to help pay off the huge mortgage he should not properly be able to afford on his current salary. Some people say he will go into some kind of international charity work; others that he will go into the venture capital market and still more that his future will be in the nuclear industry or possibly arms dealing. However, as this transcript of an interview reveals, he is clearly intent on landing the role of Vicky Pollard on the pantomime circuit, so expect to see him slapped up with greasepaint on the stage of a seaside venue near you soon. JON SOPEL: You said absolutely adamantly you were going to serve a full term. TONY BLAIR: Yeah but you know, I think most people would accept that at least you know, there’s got to be some process of transition, if you’re saying, cos the

Tony Blair Falling And Being Pushed
There are some people who want Tony Blair to stay in office forever. No, honestly. They must have taken to heart that childish gibberish he came out with on entering office. Something like  "a thousand days to prepare for a thousand years" was it? Oh, who cares? Hitler was the other great millenarian fantasist, so it is to be doubted whether there is anything to be proud of in this empty, but almost clever sounding claptrap. Still, it probably had more rhetorical cadence than his normal speeches, which usually sound like he is reading recipes which he is having to translate from a foreign language in which he is not entirely fluent. The problem is, although we can be pretty sure that Our Dear Leader is actually on his way this time (it could, of course, be just another lie) that we don’t know when and we don’t know whether things will be any better under his successor. Matthew Parris writing in The Times has this: But I think it's worse than that. A period of vapidit

"Billy No Mates' Tony Blair Enters Parallel Universe
Frank Dobson, the former Health Secretary and unsuccessful London Mayor candidate, has said that Tony Blair is now “in office but not in power” and has recommended that he goes now and lets Gordon Brown get on with things. These extracts are taken from The Independent. “Quite a few people are now thinking that things are getting into such a mess that it would be better if Tony Blair went now even if it meant that Gordon Brown did have to take some responsibility for our electoral performance in May,” he said on GMTV. Frank Dobson went on to say that nobody believes there is now any proper control within New Labour, either at the head or at departmental level. In fact, Tony Blair is now so much of a pariah, that he occupies the position of the archetypal Billy No Mates. Mr Blair is due to deliver a keynote speech today at the Davos economic summit but Mr Dobson said none of the world leaders wanted to speak to him. It is not clear whether Mr Blair has started spe

Don't count on Tony Blair really meaning what he says
Tony Blair may have renounced multiculturalism earlier this week, but the problem is that that's about all he's really done so far. Robert Spencer talks about it now on Hot Air. Frankly, I'm not waiting up, seeing how, as Dawn reports, British schools are now receiving guides to Islam containing all those religious items that Islamists use (Hat tip: Dhimmi Watch). LONDON, Dec.9: A guide to Islam is being given to primary schools across Britain containing a headscarf, a prayer mat, a prayer cap, sacred Ihram clothing worn during the pilgrimage to Makkah, a poster of the Muslim prophets and a compass to locate the direction of Makkah. According to Daily Express the teaching resource, provided by the Muslim Council of Britain, is intended to provide children aged seven and 11 with information about true Islamic beliefs. The pack, described on Friday by one head teacher as a "three-foot by three-foot plastic box", also contains CDs, videos, children's books and pamphlets and model kits

Is Tony Blair starting to wake up?
Maybe he is, but words and actions are two entirely different things, and only if a debate actually takes place will any progress be made. From the AP Wire (via Jihad Watch):LONDON Prime Minister Tony Blair said Tuesday that Britain needed a debate about the position of Muslims, but that the faith also needed to decide how it comes to terms with modernity. At his monthly news conference, Blair said he supported a local school authority's decision to bar a Muslim woman from working as a teacher while wearing a veil.He said, however, that should be just one issue in a broader debate about "the relationship between our society and how the Muslim community integrates with our society.""There's a second issues which is about Islam itself, and how Islam comes to terms with and is comfortable with the modern world," Blair said.Similar debates, he said, were happening around Europe and in the Muslim world.Blair's argument is certainly getting somewhere, but there's still a long way to go, a
