      Tombstone Tree
This 1999 sketch is of a headstone in the Charleston Unitarian Church cemetery yard. The roots of the nearby tree have become one with the tomb of Ephraim Seabrook Mikell, "A favorite with all who knew him". Wouldn't that be a nice thing for someone to say about you after your death? So ends my little series of lost (no more) 1999 sketches from Charleston.

A Goddess Calling Out For Magic and Her Inner Child - Will Your Tombstone Write Your Song?
Some days…I simply cannot commit to a full day of attention, balancing acts of the mind, conclusions set on a single drive. Peace doves light upon my window, they want in, I see them, yet, some days I am not really me. Oft times I wait too long to greet them, then find they’ve [...]

Tombstone will read: Here lies NCLB. Killed by Unrealistic Targets.
I'm what they call a podcaster.Actually, that's not a very accurate term for what I really am...which is a podcatcher. I listen to a series of weekly podcasts that others have produced. ...so, in that sense, I catch them. I get them through iTunes. (I may podcast my "Foundations of education in Kentucky lectures" from EKU this spring...but that's not a done deal...and is another story anyway.)One of my regular programs is KCRW's "To The Point," with host Warren Olney. This past week, Olney was interviewing President Eileen Claussen of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, about the recent Global Warming Conference in Bali, Indonesia, and the scientists' talk about long-term goals for curbing the negative effects of climate change (and replacing the Kyoto Protocol). At this meeting targets were discussed -much like the targets imposed by No Child Left Behind - and the European Union's growing frustration with the United States. It was a remarkable example of how natural scientist

      Tombstone, Arizona
The Townsite of Tombstone (a name invented by Edward Schieffelin - see story below) was laid out on March 5, 1879. At that time Tombstone had 40 cabins and 100 people. Allen Streets lots sold for $5. By June 20, 1880 there were 3,000 people in the town and by late 1881 there was over 7,000 people in town and more gambling houses, saloons, and a larger "boothill" and "red light" district than any town in the southwest. Population increased rapidly from that time, and in the 1890's it had reached a maximum of 15,000. Let's get back to how it all started...The Story of Edward SchieffelinTombstone erupted into a boom town when Arizona was Apache Land. Geronimo, Victorio, and Nachez led their fierce warriors in raids the length and width of Southern Arizona. Few white men penetrated this barren, land and returned to tell of it.In 1877, a prospector by the name of Lewis wandered into the dry washes, coming down out of the Tombstone Hills into San Pedro Valley. He discovered several pieces

WHAT DO YOU WANT ON YOUR TOMBSTONE?
He watched cautiously as the family in the booth beside him ordered, carefully making note of each item so as to order for his own family not just the same but better. He couldn't believe that they ordered extra pepperoni, but he went one better and ordered not only the extra pepperoni but the anchovies too for his family. Have you met people like that, that no matter what you do they have to run out and not just do the same but try and out do it? They never seem to be happy when you have good fortune, but their envy and jealousy leads them to always have to try and do one better?Looking at the Apostolic Parousia in Philippians (Phil. 2:29f) we see Paul making travel plans for Timothy with the hope that he will one day he too will be able to go to Philippi. In Philippians 2:19 Paul tells those in Philippi that he is going to send Timothy to them and then Paul gives us three qualities that we all need to learn. They are qualities that should be in each Christian's heart. Sometimes

      A Tombstone epitaph
The rain finally stopped and we reached Tombstone in the early evening - although this is what it looked like the next morning just before we left. Tombstone was christened by Edward Schieffelin - a prospector who called his silver claim and the camp that grew up around it after what he was told was the only stone he might find if he went "looking for stones" in Apache territory. He founded it in 1877, by 1879 it had 40 cabins and a 100 people. Two years later it had 5,000 people as the mining camp grew. It developed a reputation as a place of complete lawlessness and violence. Tombstone has certainly been a very popular place in film history with four films made about it, its inhabitants (Marshall Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, the Clantons) and the fabled gunfight at the OK Corral in 1881 (it's the 125th anniversary this year) - see the links below. A resume of the various clashes associated with the Earps and Clantons can be found here. Archived extracts from the Tombstone Epita

      THUNDER - "ROBERT JOHNSON'S TOMBSTONE" (2006)
Boothill, Tombstone, Arizona
Boothill CemetaryTombstone's famous "Boothill Graveyard" was originally plotted in 1878 and was first named "The Tombstone Cemetery". It was used as the city's main cemetery until the current cemetery, "Tombstone Cemetery" at the end of Allen Street was opened up in 1884. Afterwards, additional burials would be added from time to time. There was a section for all the Chinese and another area for the Jewish. It is believed some 300 persons in all were buried here. It was common for bodies to be found in various parts in and ouside of town, with no one ever being able to identify them, and they were interred with no markings, or as "unknown".After the new cemetery was opened up, Boothill Graveyard went neglected. The original grave markers were all made of wood, with painted inscriptions, and withered away under the elements. Some markers were stolen by souvenir hunters. In 1923, the city contacted several of its residents to help locate and identify graves. A boy scout troop had also s

      The Birdcage Theater, Tombstone Arizona
The Birdcage TheaterThe world famous Bird Cage Theatre, also referred to as The Bird Cage Opera House Saloon. This was a fancy way in the 1880's of describing a combination saloon, gambling hall and a house of ill repute. Well, that was the Bird Cage Theatre and it was known across America by its unreputable reputation. In 1882, the New York Times referred to the Bird Cage as, "the Roughest, Bawdiest, and most Wicked night spot between Basin Street and the Barbary Coast. For nine years it never closed its doors, operating 24 hours a day. During this period, 16 gun and knife fights took some 26 lives. There are still 140 bullet holes through-out the building, marking the ceilings, walls, and floors. Many famous happenings occurred in the barroom, which is indicated by the many bullet holes, but one of the most outstanding occurrences was the brutal killing of the lovely lady of the evening, Margarita. She was sitting on the lap of gambler Billy Milgreen when suddenly Billy's regu

      Review: <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Tombstone (...
Review: Tombstone (1993) - "Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!" (7/10)Hollywood and America have always been fair with the life of cowboys, mostly because of Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. The lives of the policemen and law officers in the west have been in sidelines for a long time now. This is one of the few films where the cowboy is not the hero, at least not when Wyatt Earp is around and Doc Holiday hangs out with him! This George Cosmatos (Rambo) movie, set in 1880's, deals with the tale of the legendary true story of Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell - The Thing), a former U.S. Marshal who retires from Law and moves into Tombstone, AZ with his two brothers, Virgil and Morgan Earp to settle down and make a small fortune for themselves. However, the town they now live in is strong-armed by the local cowboys who threaten even the souls of the local village clan. Tensions escalate when eldest Earp joins the law after not being able to tolerate the loss of human values and civil rights in the gun
