Author: Vickie Richter For years tobacco has been labeled as a smoking gun—it's the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States, killing approximately 438,000 people per year, including 38,000 deaths from exposure to secondhand smoke. Now, ironically, a personalized vaccine tailored to a patient's specific tumor type, has been developed using the leaves of the tobacco pl

Pharmacies selling cigarettes ignite industry debate:
By VERNON CLEMENT JONES, Guardian Business Editor -
Nassau, Bahamas:
An apparent growth in the number of drugstores selling cigarettes is sparking debate among pharmacists, many concerned the practice compromises ethical guidelines while providing no real boast to the bottom line.
"About 80 percent of a Bahamian pharmacy's sales are directly from prescription drug," said Crystal Gibson, a local practitioner, "There's no need for pharmacies to get involved with selling something that actually harms the client-customers they are hoping to help."
Her comments come as another two of the country's 50 or more drugstores move to stock and sell tobacco products. They join at least three others scattered across downtown Nassau offering c

"Similar to the tobacco companies" is how Schade describes the chemical industry's tactics in defense of plastics, including "hiring scientists to put out questionable studies." People worried about chemicals in plastic aren't just "nervous Nellies," says Lynn Goldman, a professor of environmental health sciences at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Others, led by the plastic and vinyl industry, say recent reports are nothing but a scare campaign. "It is . . . foolish to ban something that's safe and has proven itself for decades," says Allen Blakey, a spokesman for the Vinyl Institute, an industry group. Blakey dismisses the main evidence of harm cited by the anti-plastic camp -- a set of studies that involved mostly animal subjects -- as "flimsy." A Centers

A totally paranoid conspiracy theory, or the truth we already know and simply choose to suppress back into that little space deep within our psyches where we tell ourselves the government would never let us hurt ourselves, especially in the name of convenience or big business?I’m not one to lie so my guess is our cool, techy, gadget-filled, wireless world of constant communication is slowly killing us, and not just from the information overload. I truly believe just like big tobacco buried the truth decades ago about the addictive/harmful qualities of nicotine and tobacco, and what we all told ourselves to rationalize our own addictions, the same is happening again, only this time it’s companies like Apple, Verizon, AT&T, MCI, Comcast, Microsoft, Netgear, and Cisco at the helm.I’
The Australian government has campaigned against cigarette smoking since 2006. This campaign has used strong images, such as mouth cancer and heart disease, on the back side of cigarette packs. This campaign has succeeded. Through this campaign, many smokers, especially in young smokers, have quit their smoking. However, the images are still argued about because of their strength.
Behavioral studies clearly indicate that exposure to drugs, alcohol and tobacco in utero is bad for a baby’s developing brain, but specific anatomic brain effects have been hard to identify.
A study using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans suggests that prenatal exposure to cocaine, alcohol, marijuana or tobacco, whether by themselves or in combination, may have effects on brain structure that persist into early adolescence.
Researchers found reductions in cortical gray matter and total brain volumes. The more substances a child was exposed to in utero, the greater the reduction in brain volume.
History of tobacco and tobacco products started for the Europeans on 12th October 1492, when Christopher Columbus disembarked on one of the Bahamas islands. At his disembarkation the natives came to greet the white God. They brought him many gifts and among them also big, dried leaves of an unknown plant, which was tobacco. Columbus has also written in his logbook, that he had met men and women,

The bill will enable the FDA to prevent the introduction of new cigarette brands.

The disclosure of hidden tobacco money behind a big study suggesting that lung scans might help save smokers from cancer has shocked the research community and raised fresh concern about industry influence in important science. Two medical journals that published studies by Weill Cornell Medical College researchers in 2006 are looking into tobacco cash and other financial ties that weren't revealed. The studies reported benefits from lung scans, which the Cornell team has long touted. It's a crucial public health issue: Dozens of groups, including such anti-smoking crusaders as the American Cancer Society, have given the Cornell team money to see if routinely screening smokers with CT scans can spot the world's most lethal cancer in time to prevent deaths. The federal government also has

Addiction to alcohol or tobacco is a stage where the affected person becomes physically and emotionally dependent upon alcohol or tobacco. Addiction to alcohol and tobacco have been discussed here together, since the Ayurvedic principles of treatment, and the medicines used, are similar for both addictions. Addiction to drugs is not being dealt with here, since this requires hospital admission and treatment. Some people may have an alcohol addiction severe enough to warrant hospital admission, so that they can be treated for serious withdrawal problems like convulsions. This article is confined to the Ayurvedic Herbal treatment of those patients who can be managed on an out-patient basis, however, they still need to be under the supervision of a local physician to treat withdrawal symptoms
MADISON — Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle on Thursday blamed his state’s projected budget shortfall on the state’s smokers, citing a drastic dropoff in revenue from the recently imposed $1.77 per pack cigarette tax.
State lawmakers assumed when they passed the budget last year that cigarette taxes would bring in $987.5 million through June 30, 2009. Earlier [...]
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently published a startling report on the state of tobacco use around the world, along with some dire predictions about our future, should we continue on the path we're presently walking. Based on current trends in tobacco use worldwide, they tell us that we are poised on the brink of a global tobacco epidemic that could claim as many as one billion lives this century.Mirriam-Webster defines an epidemic as something that affects a disproportionately large number of people within a population, community, or region at the same time. Typhoid fever was an epidemic, and tobacco use will be too, unless we do something drastic to change these trends, and do it soon.Today, tobacco use is growing the fastest in low-income countries that are least equipped to d
Its just one of those things that has to go... unless over thousands of years we are able to evolve to smoke cigarettes. Its not THAT good and its not THAT hard to stop. I did it, so can everyone else. But overall, I don't care if people smoke. Ive grown a bit tired of those who find it necessary to smoke and walk on the sidewalks as the smoke blows in the peoples faces behind them...
While there is no such thing as a good addiction, probably one of the worst addictions is the one that people have to tobacco.Tobacco is a slightly different kind of addiction in comparison to addictions like gambling and sex, which are addictions that arise almost from the addictive personality itself. Tobacco is a little different because the substance itself is addictive. Most people who take up smoking, especially if they live in a tough neighborhood, do so because it is the cool thing to do. Peer pressure is a terrible thing in this world, especially if you're a youth. The last thing you want is to have your peers laugh at you, call you chicken or whatever daily abuse they dish out when you tell them no thank you to the cigarette they hand you. So in order to not be teased into oblivio

Fructose is a sweetener used in many food products, primarily as a substitute for sucrose. The main reason for its rising popularity with the food manufacturers is the availability of large quantities of corn starch, which can be enzymatically converted to fructose on an industrial scale. An alternative and a cheap source of fructose production could be fructans, the storage carbohydrates in many plants. The Truth of Tobacco, Cigar and Cigarettes, How a Herbal Aid for Asthma is Turned into a Killing Stick. by Andrew K H TanThe fact that once cigarette especially the Indonesian kretek is used as a medical aid to help warm up the lungs of asthma patients has been turned into a killing cancer stick. The fact that manufacturer of cigarette use dangerous chemicals to speed up the time taken for the aging process of the tobacco leaves because the manufacturer wants to sell in volume of millions in order to make profit and the fact that the government is earning billions of dollars in 200 to 300% tax of tobacco products.Normally the safe cigarette is made from plucking the tobacco leaves and is cured by drying the tobacco leaves in the sun or in a kiln then it is left to aged 1 or 2 years period before it is made into a cigar or cigarette which uses no additives or chemicals in the making process. However because the manufacturers wants to make large profit by selling in volumes, they used dang

As a long time smoker, the issue of tobacco taxes has always been of interest to me. I’ve written here before about how I avoid all tobacco taxes and save huge amounts of money as a result. However, I just today learned about another hidden tax on tobacco that we seldom hear about: Cigarette Tax Bonds.
According to JW Bond Consultants, a family owned surety bond company: “Cigarette Tax Bonds are required to guarantee taxes are paid from a seller of tobacco to the government requiring the bond.“ In other words tobacco sellers need to pay a private company, such as JW Bond Consultants, 1%-20% of their expected tobacco tax bill, in order to ensure the seller will actually pay the government the exorbitant “sin” tax it applies to cigarettes and other tobacco products. The bond company then promises to handle collection of the debt should the tobacco seller default.
Since this cost can’t be added into the taxes themselves it is, of course, passed o
As expected, Washington (IN) big man Tyler Zeller announced his intentions to attend North Carolina in an afternoon press conference.
Zeller tried to downplay the role of the recent sanctions imposed on Coach Kelvin Sampson as a reason for spurning the Hoosiers, but one of his quotes following the press conference caught my attention. Zeller was asked how the sanctions affected his decision and here’s what he said:
“A little bit, but not really. You gotta look at the long run and the more I looked into it, the long run was kind of confusing. I wanted to get it over with and I couldn’t figure out what exactly was going to happen. So a little bit, but like I said, I just felt more comfortable with North Carolina,” Zeller said.
Zeller is the second five-star recruit in North Carolina’s 2008 class, joining forward Ed Davis from Mechanicsville, Virginia. The Tar Heels also have a commitment from four-star guard Larry Drew from Woodland Hills, CA.

The tiny toner particles that most laser printers put into the air are as dangerous for your lungs as tobacco smoke. This is a result of an investigation done by a Australian University. 17 out of the 62 investigated printers put dangerous amounts of fine particles into the air. Possible consequences of exposure to these particles are respiratory problems, asthma, heart problems and cancer. Ventilate your printer space well!
I am always surprised by the number of cigarette smokers who inquire about life insurance and when they find out what the cost is, they suddenly lose all interest. The difference in cost is likely no where near what they are spending on the habit, but they aren’t going to give up the habit, so……..
Just a few examples of the difference in cost using perfectly healthy 45 and 55 year old men. Assuming they are both looking for $500,000 of 20 year term.
For non smokers the best annual rate for the 45 year old is $615.00 and for the 55 year old it is $1500.00. Man, they really don’t cut us old guys much slack.
If they both smoke cigarettes, the best annual rate for the 45 year old is $2010.00 and for the old guy it is $4440.00.
Sooo, nearly three times as much if you smoke. Life insurance underwriters are all too familiar with the health risks associated with smoking. Heart disease and cancer top the long list of health issues that are either directly caused by s

An outdoor advertising campaign to explain the the change in the law was launched on Monday 24th September as part of an awareness campaign over the past four months to ensure that both retailers and teenagers are fully aware. Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said: "We are determined to reduce the number of young people who smoke. Raising the legal age of sale to 18 will make it easier for retailers to spot under-age smokers and lead to less young people becoming addicted to nicotine and continuing to smoke into adulthood. Strong Tobacco Control LawsSupreme Court of Canada delivered an important victory for public health that has global implications in upholding the country's strong tobacco control laws.It include strong restrictions on tobacco advertising and sponsorships and large, graphic health warnings on cigarette packs. Canada has been a world leader in adopting strong measures to reduce tobacco use, especially in the area of marketing restrictions and health warnings, and also has strong constitutional protections for freedom of expression.Today's unanimous ruling shows that nations can take strong, effective actions to reduce tobacco use and save lives that are consistent with free speech protections. This decision reaffirms the right of governments to take effective action to reduce tobacco use, which kills more than five million worldwide each year, and to place limits on the ability of tobacco companies to mislead consumers or to market their deadly and addictive products in ways that make

Tobacco-Free Campus PolicyStarting July 1, 2007, anyone visiting or working for the Utah Department of Health will either need to find somewhere else to light up or quit smoking. The UDOH has adopted a tobacco-free policy for its buildings and grounds, and cessation services are offered to those who want to kick the habit.'Going smoke-free is just the right thing to do,' said Dr. David Sundwall, UDOH Executive Director. 'Not only is smoke an irritant for non-smoking staff and patrons, but secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer, heart disease, and illness in children. We couldn't in good conscience allow open smoking on our grounds any longer,' he said. The goal of the tobacco-free policy is to improve the health of UDOH employees and visitors by both reducing exposure to secondhand smoke and promoting quitting. Cutting tobacco use also increases productivity, lowers absenteeism, and reduces medical and other costs associated with tobacco use in the workplace.UDOH buildings have been

Youth Tobacco SurveyThe latest findings show that tobacco use among Mississippi public high school and middle school students is decreasing.Significant findings from the survey include a 43 percent drop in frequent cigar use by public high school students and a 30 percent decrease in current cigarette use by public middle school students between 2004 and 2006. The survey examines public high school and middle school students' use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and cigars.According to Dr. Lovetta Brown, Interim State Epidemiologist, the findings suggest that students are hearing the message about the dangers of tobacco use and beginning to apply that message to their lives. The survey findings also show a slight increase by public middle school students who had ever used smokeless tobacco, from 14.7 percent in 2004 to 15.5 percent in 2006, and an increase in the percentage of public high school students who had ever smoked cigarettes, from 59.4 percent to 61.2 percent. The 2006 Youth

Ahh … what to buy for the traveling hippie who has everything? TravelGearBlog points us to the Solopipe:
A lighter and bowl all-in-one.
“Solopipe is the revolutionary self-igniting smoking apparatus that combines refillable, adjustable butane lighter with a high quality tobacco smoking pipe.”
This invention was a long time coming and I’m glad someone finally took the time and money to put it together.
Yes, thank god for that. I love how such “devices” are referred to officially as “tobacco” pipes. Rrrrrright. With their tagline of “… all you need now is something to smoke”, I’m sure they only have tobacco in mind.
Today, 1st July, the ban on smoking in any enclosed public space came into force in England and Wales. It is now illegal to smoke in an enclosed public space - and that includes both private enclosed spaces intended for the public, apart from private homes. The ban is intended not for the protection of smokers, but rather for the protection of those subjected to the effects of secondary smoking. This kind of legislation leaves the government in an interesting ethical (and potentially legal) quandary. The problem, so it seems to me, is this. Suppose you introduce legislation, such as the smoking ban, which is intended to reduce the likelihood of certain diseases - in this case a range of cancers. So the intention is to extend expected longevity, and I think the statistical evidence is strong enough for this intention to be found in practice. So government action is directly contributing to the likelihood of a person living long enough to suffer from Alzheimer's. There is a very str
Two little boys were sitting on the porch, when one little boy says, "My daddy smokes, and he can blow smoke rings."
Then Little Johnny, not to be outdone responds, "My Dad can blow smoke out of his ass."
"Really, have you seen it?" asks the other boy.
Little Johnny responds, "No, but I've seen the tobacco stains in his underwear.
How the Camel gets its jump: The Tobacco company's new tricks AUSTIN, Texas - Growing up in the 1990s, I thought Joe Camel was pretty cool. He was tough, confident and often accompanied by beautiful Jessica Rabbit-like cartoon women. Or at least that's the image I remember. Like any cartoon, Joe Camel caught my attention. His image remains just as vivid as Tony the Tiger, Chester Cheetah, Toucan Sam and the California Raisins. But when Mr. Camel's character was said to be directly responsible for an increase in cigarette sales from $6 million in 1988 to $476 million in 1991, R.J. Reynolds voluntarily laid the cigarette icon to rest under pressure from Congress and public interest groups.Still, I remember Joe "Cool" Camel, and I am not surprised that Camel cigarettes are a popular choice among people my age.But what's one thing that many people - especially children - love even more than cartoons?Presents! At Christmas time, on birthdays or anywhere in between, pretty, nicely wrappe
The New York Court of Appeals on Thursday ruled tobacco companies who are part of the 1998 agreement that settled tobacco litigation with most states can go to arbitration to try to reduce their settlement payments. The $246 billion Master Settlement Agreement required tobacco companies to make annual payments to the states and also placed restrictions on how cigarettes are marketed but, if the tobacco companies that signed the agreement lose market share because of those restrictions, they...

I have no idea what I’m going to do with this free Timberwolf smokeless tobacco seeing as how I don’t even smoke, let alone use chewing tobacco. I don’t know, it has something to do with that irrational fear of mine of getting cancer or scaring off girls with nasty teeth/breath/smoky smell. I like the little signature tool they have on this site though where you sign your name to prove that you’re 18 years old. Now THAT’S foolproof!
