      Timing really is everything.
Go figure. Anna didn't even seem to give a hoot about her pacifier being gone when it was bedtime. I nursed her to sleep last night, and she zonked out for about seven hours! Holy smokes! That's her longest sleep yet I think? I just changed her diaper, fed her and she's sleeping peacefully.YAY!! Now if that thrush will just go away. . .

Stock Market Timing - Kissing Moving Average Support Again
Despite the QQQQ falling almost 2% today, we are right at the 9-day moving average again. As you can see, the QQQQ broke above the 9-day average in the middle of April and has yet to break below it for 15 straight trading days. The last time the QQQQ touched the 9-day moving average, a huge rally followed. Will that happen again? Maybe. However, a quick visual scan of the chart going back to 1999 only results in one other instance, August 2000, where the 9-day moving average was not broken for 15 straight trading days. That time period was a great opportunity to get aggressively short. Will we look back at this period and say the same thing too? Let's see what tomorrow brings. An excellent blog that I have recently found is Quantifiable Edges. I am going to request that he take a look at thi

Bowling Tip - Correct Your Timing
Out of sync? Here is a simple cure for a complex problem. Often intermediate bowlers will have a bad league night. You know the kind of night I'm talking about. It's when, no matter how hard you try, you just can't seem to throw the ball where you want to. It keeps consistently going to the right or to the left. This can be really frustrating and highly damaging to your bowling psyche, not to mention your league average. One of the major causes for this problem can be - you are just a little out of timing. The good news is the cure is often very simple. Read on! What caused timing problems? I define timing as the moment of release, which is ideally just prior to the bottom of the swing arc. When the release is timed correctly the ball continues forward on your target line. However if the b

Stock Market Timing - More Downside Ahead?
Maybe, maybe not.Despite the moderate selloff after the FOMC announcement, I don't think that today's action necessarily indicates that more downside is ahead. I think the "real" response to the Fed's decision will happen tomorrow.Whether we break downwards or rally tomorrow, I will look at my technical indicators for confirmation to make a contrary play. So I could be looking to buy option puts in the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQQ) if we rally and option calls if we fade.On a separate note, I like the late day comeback in Oil Service HOLDRs (AMEX: OIH). I decided to pick up some option calls at the close with a stop below yesterday's low.

I think that this negative pressure could continue tomorrow and Friday.Looking at my technical indicators, they are all suggesting there is a possibility that more downside is ahead. Seeing that we closed near resistance at $47 today and AAPL is being pressed after hours, I am looking at a downside target of $45.30.Edit: AAPL has since bounced back after hours and is trading down a couple tenths of a percent. Timing is Important in Opening Your Biz and Postcard Mailing
If there is any similarity with opening a new business and campaigning for it, it is about the timing. The opening of your biz needs to be timely. And if you want to promote that business using postcard mailing, you also have to schedule it wisely. Some people in the business believe in luck. They will ask for a psychic’s guidance or go to a feng shui expert. They are willing to take all those hassles just to predict the proper time in which they should open up their business. Well, luck is good. Psychic’s predictions sometimes do come true. And feng shui offers some enlightenment to those who need it. But when talking about timing, the calendar will be your best bud. Business Location This is vital in this case. You have to know what the weather will be in the coming days and months.

Stock Market Timing - Testing Support Levels
What can I say? Prior to the last hour of trading, the action in the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQQ) looked bearish (but not overly so). I was looking for a low today in the $44.50 area, and I almost got it. I think that this level may be tested again tomorrow or the next day, and if it is not broken, we could very well challenge the $47 level.I have to admit that I am quite surprised at the resiliency of this recent rally. It is because of this strength that I think a new high in the $47 level could be in the near future.

Timing: The Credit Crunch & Peak Oil
Those with a more apocalyptic bent seem to see the onset of a world peak in oil production and the current economic “credit crunch” as a sure sign that the end is nigh. I disagree—I think we’re in the midst of a “slow crash” that will unfold over the next several decades. That doesn’t, however, mean that I think the timing of the credit crunch won’t have a serious effect on peak oil… I think that our economy is fundamentally strong, both in America and world wide. Yes, I predicted there would be no recession in the US in 2008, and I still think that there isn’t a “real” recession in those parts of the economy grounded in reality. There certainly isn’t a recession where I live, judging by the job market, by the lines at drive-through Starbucks, etc. I'm sur

Timing of New Tools and Techniques
Timing the introduction of new tools and techniques has to be done very carefully in a project or an organization. Introducing a new tool or technique into a project or organization and expecting magical results almost never happens. In fact almost in all cases there is an initial loss of productivity or quality. The reason for this loss is due to the followingThere is always a learning curve for the new tool or technique to be adopted.Almost always the initial use of the tool or the technique is never the most optimised or best way to use it. Sometimes a technique requires a mindset change and this mindset change takes time. There will always be skeptics to anything new that is introduced and these skeptics can always bring the others down.Does this mean that no new tools or techniques need

I put “revelations” in quotes because, after all, what we are really talking about are leaks. While the affidavit that triggered the arrests of four people

Apparently I was overly optimistic expecting that a post-Fed rally would last for more than a day.Today's action in the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQQ) was downright depressing. Amazing! Those who can keep their heads during periods like the one we're in can find amazing opportunities. I'm going to spend some time this week looking at indicators that we can use to spot opportunities. Today, I'm going to focus on the Japanese yen.I've been following the U.S. dollar and Japanese yen exchange rate for a long time, almost a year now. Specifically, I detected early on a linkage between the yen and stock prices in the U.S. Quite simply, the weaker the yen got, the higher stock prices went. That relationship is over now that the yen is strengthening and U.S. stocks are weakening. The best way to observe, and even trade, this relationship i

The United States has long considered Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that seized the Gaza Strip last year, to be a terrorist group, and the Bush administration remains firmly opposed to direct talks until Hamas renounces violence and recognizes Israel. This is the plan I am playing tomorrow.Plan B: We do a low volume fade over the next several days back to last Friday's low of $41.17. (see point 2) However, we had this continuing problem where customers would have a problem with the .NET site, maybe they had a crash and we had no way to diagnose the crash other than to remote into their machine and try to reproduce the error.  What made it worse is that they had debug mode off, and we could not even see the exact crash details.  Oft

Stock Market Timing - The Rose Colored Glasses Come Off!
So my hopes for a year end rally were smashed on Monday's destruction of the 20-day moving average. I was obviously wearing my rose colored glasses, because I should have seen the bearishness when 51.75 was lost. Although I did take a hit on my option calls in the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQQ), I was able to reverse my position early Monday and minimize my losses. With the break of the 20-day moving average, I think that the market is in poor shape and my very well be headed substantially lower over the next several months. At the market close I did pick up some option puts as I begin to create a substantial position. I think that the remainder of this year will have some whipsaws, but overall the QQQQ will remain in a trading range around the $50 level.I'd like to wish my readers a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. I will be traveling for the remainder of 2007, but I will be back in 2008. Cheers!Stock market timing signal = aggressive bear †† Here is more information ab

Is Tony Parker Two-Timing Eva Longoria
This one’s still up in the air, but preliminary reports from X17Online claim that a French model is saying that she recently had an affair with Tony Parker. And adding insult to injury, she says that they exchanged phone numbers at his wedding with Eva Longoria.According to the paparazzi agency, Alexandra Paressant says she hooked up with the San Antonio Spur in Paris this past September, and then again in Texas in October. Before you get all belligerent, consider this: Paressant isn’t the most reliable source when it comes to integrity. She formerly dated Brazilian soccer player Ronaldhino, and spread rumors that his “all-night partying” during the 2006 World Cup led to Brazil’s loss. However, some of the facts seem to stick. Both Parker and Paressant are native French. And it

Stock Market Timing - Is A Year End Rally Coming?
So I liked the setup prior to the FOMC announcement and went big buying some option puts in the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQQ). I felt that it was a classic setup for a sell the news reaction and I was right. At the close of yesterday's market, I sold 2/3 of my puts and my stock trading system saw new yearly highs!Today's early rebound action made me happy I locked in a majority of my gains. Additionally, I was thinking that if the QQQQ can hover around the low 52 range, a Christmas rally from that level could be a possibility. With the afternoon rinse almost touching the 20-day moving average and the immediate recovery, I sold out my option puts. I will be looking to buy some calls in the next day or so because I feel there is a strong possibility of a Christmas rally. An Exercise In Market Timing
Over the past two months (actually beginning October 1st) I conducted a documented experiment on this site. Although Reuters and other media republished some of the articles, my impression is that this exercise in market timing went completely unnoticed. Since I do not, neither do I want to, provide financial advice, I will not publish any more articles related to market timing. What I will do here is dispel the myth that the markets are unpredictable. thebankruptcynewsdotcom First a clarification. I do not think that randomness has a place in the universe. I firmly believe that randomness is just a general name for the limit of our computational power. Whatever lies beyond our ability to compute complex results arising from simple rules we call random. In the quest for knowledge, whenever I read a reference to randomness, I read it as as confession of the limits of the knowledge of the writer. This subject is not an easy one to tackle. We spent our Thanksgiving dinner with family and

Stock Market Timing - Christmas Rally in the Cards?
Well after the light volume fade over the past three days, the rally in the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQQ) continues. My small amount of call options in the QQQQ are working nicely, but I will be looking to sell them into strength soon.Because the QQQQ captured the 20-day and never closed below it on the recent pullback, coupled with today's big move, I think the 52.25 level will be tested. We just might end the year on a high note.Stock market timing signal = cautious bull †† Here is more information about my stock market timing signal.

      Shitty timing.
{summary}Rosco has a measles rash from the MMR vaccine he got last week.  That is not to say that he has measles, just a non-contagious rash which is a side effect of the measles part of the vaccine.  It looks dreadful. We were supposed to have his pictures taken today but as he resembles a human pizza pie that ain’t happening.  For those of you waiting for Snarky Family holiday cards, you’ll have to wait a week longer this year as well, because splotchy babies in Santa hats aren’t cute. This is what trips me out: “What side effects have been reported with this vaccine? Fever is the most common side effect, occurring in 5%-15% of vaccine recipients. About 5% of persons develop a mild rash. When they occur, fever and rash appear 7-10 days after vaccination. Wow! That was a nice rally in the PowerShares QQQ Trust (Nasdaq: QQQQ). My call options in the QQQQ worked out quite well and I sold them out completely at today's close.Could this rally continue? Possibly. But I feel that since the QQQQ closed near its 20-day simple moving average (possible resistance) and that people will want to lock in some gains off this bounce, the more probable scenario is that we come down from here.Of course weird things could happen and we could rally into the holiday season. Sony: When timing is everything...
Use a Nikon?Or at least that appears to be the message.I opened my copy of Outside Magazine's companion piece of fluff, Go, this morning and was greeted by an ad for Sony's A700 DSLR with the tagline "In Photography, Timing is Everything." The accompanying photograph was spectacular and showed a leopard about to dispatch a baboon. Dust is flying and, clearly, timing has a lot to do with the impact of this photo. It was also very familiar. In fact, it's a 1965 photograph taken by John Dominis for the late, lamented Life Magazine. You can see a version of the originally published photo at Getty Images. In the Sony ad photo, there are some slight differences in the position of the dust and the baboon's mouth but they're clearly part of the same sequence. Perhaps a quarter of a second separated them as Dominis' motor drive clicked away. Gordon Haffmore : cnet

Stock Market Timing - Playing This Drop
Well today's drop was the fifth major drop in as many weeks. However, this time the PowerShares QQQ Trust (Nasdaq: QQQQ) closed below its 20-day simple moving average. I can't call the bull rally officially over yet, but if the QQQQ closes below $53 in the next several days I will become a very aggressive bear. Since the $53 level is not yet broken, I picked up a small amount of call options for a quick bounce play (selling at $53.70). However, based on the further decline during today's after hours market, I may be regretting this position.Stock market timing signal = cautious bear †† Here is more information about my stock market timing signal.

      Timing Matters
With acquisitions timing can make a big difference. It plays out in two major ways: 1. What kind of multiples might be paid for the acquisition? 2. The availability of financing to finance the acquisition. Think of it as being similar to the real estate market. There can be times in real estate when things get too pricey. The people who get in near the top may have to take a hit for a couple years and ride it out for a while to get back on the curve. On the other hand, people who buy at nice timing in the market can get some very nice returns and give themselves an extra measure of safety. Like real estate, some of the cycles in buying companies can be rather long-term. It can be like a ten year cycle. Work with your financial advisor who’s helping you on the transaction and get a sense on how the timing is in the market. If you think you’re not quite in the market yet and it may be a couple years, it’s good to start making those connections. That could influence you perhaps to

      Defence and counter attack timing
Imagine your opponent is standing, facing you in a right lead stance (southpaw) and he is about to go for a roundhouse kick with the back leg. Firstly he would probably make some kind of movement with his arms (either slightly raise his left arm, or just drop his front arm). Next, maybe a slight pivot with the front foot, or moving it slightly forward, then his knees would bend as he lifts his back leg of the ground, whilst still moving his arms in a direction natural to him to generate momentum. Finally his kicking surface, (shin, instep) would be swung into his choice of target (probably thigh, midsection or face). Now all of this would happen in about 1 second and most beginners would start there defence or counter attack when they see the leg swinging in towards them. The best timing to start your defence or counter is WHEN YOU SEE THE INITIAL MOVEMENT. In this case it would be as soon as you see his hands move, or if not then, then no later when his front foot moves. This is the

Timing and Influence: But I know you know that I know . . .
The subject of timing and influence has fascinated me for a long time. Early on it was apparent to me that influence has little to do with what would logically follow: It's not about command of the facts. Instead it's a quite irrational process. There has been extensive research on how we are influenced by a person's appearance, both in terms of attractiveness and similarity to our own. We are known to be more inclined to say acquiesce to requests than refuse. The emotional state of the persons involved is also important. Here is a post from We're Only Human that gives us a glimpse of the emotion involved in timing and influence. Two Berkeley psychologists decided to test this particular brand of irrationality in the laboratory. Eduardo Andrade and Teck-Hua Ho used a modified version of what’s called the “ultimatum game”: In this well-known psychological experiment, volunteers are told that they have a pot of money that they must divvy up for themselves and a stranger. Judo and Karate Ashi barai timing
The foot sweep (called ashi barai in Karate and Judo) can be extremely effective. It can be used to distract your opponent while attacking in combination and sometimes can be used to take down opponents. There is one other way that it can be used to not only 99.99% of the time take down your opponent but also make him/her think twice about moving in to you, and if they cant move in to you, they cant hurt you. Your opponent will move in by moving his feet towards you, sliding, stepping or any other way. As they move in, there front foot will momentarily be off the ground and for that moment there balance is unstable. If you can sweep that front foot just before it lands back on the floor, whilst also being cautious of any oncoming attack, there is a high chance they will fall, and if they don't fall they will certainly lose there balance for you to carry on attacking. Psychologically it will also make them think twice about closing the gap. It requires a lot of practice and drilling

      It's All About Timing
I often tell my clients that the closing date on a purchase contract is much like a baby's due date. Not very many babies come into the world on their due date and not many houses close on the exact date in the contract. "If you have to pick a perfect moving day, what would it be?" is generally how I start a discussion with a new client. And from there we try to put together a game plan that will accomplish their real estate agenda as close to the target date as possible. There are a lot of variables that come into play and it often gets complicated and unnerving. A current client of mine suggested that I address this topic in my blog and so here goes. Please keep in mind that there are no steadfast rules for real estate timing.Usually the simplest transaction is a renter purchasing a single family home. Of course the first objective is to find a house. Some buyers will find them the first day out, but more likely buyers can plan on 2 to 3 weeks or more to locate the home of their dra

      Timing the "S" Corporation Designation
The corporate entity is a very popular one with most businesses. Although traditional "C" corporations are frowned upon for small businesses, "S" corporations are viewed more favorably. So, just what are "S" and "C" corporations? The technical answer is they different classifications of corporations from both a legal and tax aspect. For instance, a "C" corporation can have as many shareholders as it can find while an "S" entity is limited to less than 75.While there are plenty of technical legal issues, the "S" versus "C" choice tends to boil down to a tax question. As with all tax questions, it is not a simple one per se. One has to look at issues related to the initial finances of the corporation as well as where the entity will ultimately be positioned. For instance, if the intention is to take a corporation public in a few years, one has to keep in mind a "C" corporation is the only version that can go public. At the end of the day, a majority of businesses end up going with the "S"

Generals Differ on the Timing of Troop Cuts
WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 — As the Bush administration mulls options for withdrawing forces in Iraq, fault lines are beginning to emerge in a debate between commanders in the field who favor slow reductions and senior generals at the Pentagon who favor cutting the number of combat troops more deeply. Among others, Gen. Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the Army chief of staff, are said to be leaning toward a recommendation that steep reductions by the end of 2008, perhaps to half of the 20 combat brigades now in Iraq, should be the administration’s goal. Such a drawdown would be deeper and faster than Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq, is expected to recommend next month, administration officials said. “If you’re out in Baghdad you might have a different priority for where you want the troops,” an administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the White House has not authorized public remar

Stinky Munchkins - Release the Lions/Bad Timing
      - This new double A-side single by disco'd Munchkins Dino Bardot, Daryl Doll and co. is a rather colourful affair. And that's just the artwork… as for the music, it's rather patchy. “Release The Lions” is all over the place. A truly uncountable number of tunes are blended into one, mashed up song - it could be OK, but it is so confusingly cut'n'pasted that it's embarrassingly messy. The song stop-starts to the point of exhaustion, and despite some funky riffs, it really wouldn't do much in the way of getting people off their seats and dance in a party environment (which is clearly the aim). Follow-up “Bad Timing” is better. Skatty guitars alongside intricate backing instrumentation, it is reminiscent of the first Rapture album with danceable grooves. However, while it is a decent light-hearted dance-pop song, fun and bouncy enough, it still sounds dated, in no way giving life to a tried and tested style of retro pop. Average Munchkins, then.

Really Bad Timing; On outside of Chase looking in, Newman in career-long slump
Ryan Newman finds himself in the thick of the struggle to be one of the 12 drivers who will compete for the championship via the Chase for the Nextel Cup. It won't be easy. Entering the rain-postponed Michigan race, Newman stood 13th, trailing Kurt Busch and barely ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. Inexplicably, Newman has found himself in the midst of a career slump. He has won 12 races and 41 poles, but his most recent trip to victory lane was in New Hampshire on Sept. 18, 2005. He failed to make the Chase for the first time in 2006. In some ways, Newman's frustrations go hand in hand with those of Dodge, which had won only twice this year entering Michigan. The season's first Dodge victory went to Juan Pablo Montoya at Infineon Raceway in June. Then Newman's Penske Racing teammate, Kurt Busch, won at Pocono Raceway on Aug. 5. Newman's best season was 2003, when he won eight races. Timing of Online Auctions
Some new research by Uri Simonsohn entitled Excess Entry into High Demand Markets - Evidence from the Timing of Online Auctions, throws some light on that difficult issue - when to end your auctions.  Competition neglect is the effect of people choosing actions which would maximise their profits in the absence of competition.  In other words, they do not take into account the effect on competition on their sales, piling into the next big thing without thinking that everyone else is doing the same. Simonsohn shows that competition neglect is rife in eBay, with sellers listing at high traffic times, without realing that they times produce lower sale prices.  The research showed the following: At peak times e.g. Sunday evening, there is a lower bids to auctions ratio i.e. auctions get fewer bids.  For example between 8 and 9a.m. 3.9% of items end but 4.7% of bids are placed, whilst between 5p.m. and 9p.m. 25% of bids are placed but 37.5% of items end.
