      Yanks @ Tigers Series Preview
Yankees - Tigers@ Comerica Park(3 games)The Yankees look for some revenge this weekend when they visit Detroit to take on the Tigers who swept the Yankees at Yankee Stadium for the first time since 1966. Although that revenge won't be easy, as they have Kei Igawa and Darrell Rasner starting the first two games of this series.Since they left New York, the Tigers have not played well losing 6 of their last 7 games to the Twins and Red Sox. The Tigers are now 15-21 and in last place in the AL Central, 3.5 games behind first place Minnesota.Following the Tigers series the Yanks swept Seattle and lost two of three to the Indians. Offensively they're still looking to find themselves, and without Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez that has proven to be very difficult. The Yanks are 18-18, and 4.5 ga

      Red Sox 5, Tigers 1: 1,000…and counting…
Red Sox fans are very lucky–not every team has a pitcher who, when he steps on the mound, makes you feel there is no way he could lose…The Sox had that in Pedro Martinez, and in Curt Schilling. And once again, the Sox have that elusive TRUE ace–in Josh Beckett. Every time he pitches, I [...]

Carlos Guillen led the Tigers' attack with 3 hits, including a double, a run scored and 5 RBIs while four Tigers - Curtis Granderson, Ivan Rodriguez, Jacque Jones and Edgar Renteria - had 2 hits apiece; Jones and Miguel Cabrera hit a home run each for Detroit - for Cabrera, it was his 5th of the year. Clay Rapada (2-0) got the win as he pitched 1 2/3 innings, striking out 2. Texas was led by four players with 2 hits each - Ian Kinsler, Michael Young, David Murphy and Gerald Laird

Tigers' Guillen, Cabrera To Switch Positions
In an unusual twist, according to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press, Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced that Carlos Guillen and Miguel Cabrera will switch positions for at least the short-term future; as of this writing, Guillen will man third base while Cabrera will be the regular first baseman. Prior to the switch, Guillen had played 96 games in the major leagues at third while Cabrera had never played first base until very recently. Leyland has said very little about the switch nor has he hinted at whether this is a permanent move. Although Leyland hasn't said it outright, I get the impression that the switch was made to imply that Guillen and Cabrera were deficient defensively at their former positions.

      Tigers Rout Rangers 10-2
Ramon Santiago clubbed a two-run homer and drove in three as the Tigers crushed the Rangers 10-2 in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Edgar Renteria went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Detroit, which has won two in-a-row to climb to 8-and-13. Justin Verlander got his first win of the season, allowing just one run over six innings. Josh Hamilton and Frank Catalanotto each plated a run for Texas, which has lost five straight to fall to 7-and-14. Vicente Padilla was lit up for seven runs in just three frames to suffer the loss.

Indians Rough Up Verlander, Tigers 11-1
Thursday's game between the Detroit Tigers pitted a team that has an explosive offense (Cleveland) against a team that is reeling (Detroit). The Indians' offense exploded as they had 13 hits, leading them to an 11-1 mauling of the Tigers at Progressive Field. 4 Indians - Jamey Carroll, Victor Martinez, Franklin Gutierrez and Jason Michaels - had 2 hits each; Michaels drove in 3 while Carroll added 2 RBIs. Ryan Garko and Travis Hafner added a HR apiece. Fausto Carmona (2-1) had a strong effort and got the win as he pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing 7 hits, an earned run, walking 1 while striking out 2. Twins Bullpen Fails as Tigers Rally for 11-9 Win
The Tigers wiped out a pair of five-run deficits, scoring six times in the bottom of the eighth to beat the Twins 11-9. It was like batting practice against the Twins bullpen, who gave up seven runs over three innings after starter Nick Blackburn allowed four runs in the sixth. The Tigers had not scored a run in 26 straight innings before breaking through on Blackburn. The comeback ruined a productive night for the Twins offense, which pounded out 13 hits, including three by Delmon Young and two each by Denard Span, Jason Kubel, Brendan Harris and Adam Everett.

Robertson Beaten Up, Red Sox Destroy Tigers 12-6
The Detroit Tigers are, without a doubt, in a funk that doesn't bode well for them despite this being very early in the baseball season. Thursday's game against the Boston Red Sox illustrated that fact in a big way as Boston had 13 hits, chasing Detroit starter Nate Robertson as the Red Sox won going away, 12-6, at Fenway Park. Boston was led by J.D. Drew, going 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs while Dustin Pedroia, Coco Crisp and Sean Casey contributed 2 hits each. Winning pitcher Tim Wakefield (1-0) was effectively wild, pitching 5 innings, allowing only 3 hits, an earned run, walking 5 while striking out 5; he also hit two Tigers. Jonathan Papelbon pitched an inning to notch his 3rd save. Detroit was led by Ivan Rodriguez, going 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base while P

Environment » Blog Archive » Animal welfare vs conservation: the case of China’s tigers | Blogs | Reuters.com
An interesting case: A project in South Africa run by an animal conservation charity is trying to save the South China Tiger by creating an environment where they can learn to hunt, and other survival skills. A laudable cause, but where it gets controversial is that in order for the tigers to learn hunting and other predatory skills, they are provided with live animals to hunt and kill, from chickens for the tiger cubs to blesbok, a kind of antelope, for the adults. The SPCA (society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) is appalled at such a practice and is howling their righteous indignation. “It is a spurious argument that carnivores need to be fed animals, live. Not in captivity they don’t!,” the SPCA, which regards the practice as cruel, says. And you thought all roads

Tigers' Inge Odd Man Out At 3B
By Stephen Rhodes I suppose it was a matter of time before this would happen. With the acquisition of ex-Florida Marlins third basemen Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge - now unseated - told team president /general manager Dave Dombrowski that he'd rather start as a third baseman elsewhere than be a reserve or utility man in Detroit. Call it what you want, but that's as close to a trade demand as you can get. And don't think that the Tigers haven't explored that option. On friday afternoon, Dombrowski told Detroit radio station WXYT-AM 1270 that he discussed the situation with Inge; he also told MLB.com, "He very much loves it here and has very mixed emotions. We think the world of him also, but with the acquisition of Cabrera, we don't have that role for him [at third base]. His desire would be to go somewhere and have an opportunity to play at third base." The Tigers have been gauging interest in Inge; assuming that the Tigers trade him - and there'

This was tucked under one of my windshield wipers yesterday. I noticed it when going to my car on my way to work. My favorite error is how Luis put two question marks in the English version at the beginning and end of the first sentence and forgot to the upside-down question mark used in Spanish “preguntas.” This is either my second or third one of these type of notes from people wanting to buy my car. “No,” he replied, “I love my car.” I made this security lining for an envelope containing a check tonight. I thought it looked nifty and was worth sharing. I’m up later than I should be. I’m so glad it’s Friday tomorrow. Peace out.

      Tigers Land Cabrera, Willis
As huge as this trade is, it's fairly straightforward. The Tigers get much better in 2008-09, while giving up a couple guys that could be superstars in 2010 and beyond (if not before that). It's the kind of trade we don't see that often anymore, as teams have learned to value prospects appropriately. But when a guy whose age 21-24 comps are "Hank Aaron, Hank Aaron, Hank Aaron, and Hank Aaron" is involved, you're going to have to give up some serious talent.Tigers get:Miguel CabreraMiguel Cabrera hit .320/.401/.565 last year. Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge hit .236/.312/.376. Miggy had the slight edge in VORP, 71.4 to -3.3. It is rare that you upgrade by 75 runs offensively at a position, but that's what's happening here. The similar contrast in the defensive skill of these two can't be ignored, however. Over the last three years in Dewan's +/- system, Inge is +61 plays; Miggy is -37. That works out to (very roughly) 25 runs per year, which puts a small dent in the

      Cabrera, Willis traded to Tigers
By Stephen Rhodes Things got interesting in Nashville immediately; Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Florida Marlins have traded third baseman Miguel Cabrera and starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis to the Detroit Tigers for star prospects Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller, plus four other players. Detroit initiated the trade talks earlier in the day Tuesday, when it was rumored that the Los Angeles Angels were interested in Cabrera. As the day went on, talks grew to include Willis. Florida, because the trade was successful in shedding some payroll, obtained Maybin, highly regarded as one of the 5 top prospects in baseball, and Miller - a lefty pitcher who was considered the best player in the 2006 draft. Also included in the trade to the Marlins were catcher Mike Rabelo, reliever Eulogio de la Cruz and starters Dallas Trahern and Blake Badenhop. Detroit had considered going after Willis after the 2005 season, although hus stock went os high that the cost would've been proh

Manic Street Preachers - Send Away The Tigers
On 2007’s ‘Send Away The Tigers’, the long-running Britpop act Manic Street Preachers reconvened after the debut solo albums by vocalist/guitarist James Dean Bradfield and bassist Nicky Wire (’The Great Western’ and ‘I Killed the Zeitgeist’, respectively). Clearly reinvigorated by the time off, the Manics offer up some of their edgiest songs in years (see the raucous “I’m Just a Patsy”), while also presenting some engaging pop-oriented moments, most notably “Your Love Alone Is Not Enough,” a soaring duet that pairs Bradfield’s plaintive voice with the breathy coo of the Cardigans’ Nina Persson. Arguably the finest Manics outing since 1996’s ‘Everything Must Go’, ‘Send Away The Tigers’ proves that the Welsh band can still rock with fury while keeping its hooky, accessible veneer intact. Disappointingly free of facial hair are youthful London quartet Instruments. Unashamedly influenced by the Kinsella brothers, they play an energetic but tight set of sumptuously melodic, mostly instrumental emo.
