      Thursdays @ Google
Ok, so I don't spend my Thursdays at Google... that title just rolled off my fingers. However, I have spent a few different days at the Googleplex, including this past Thursday. It's probably fair for you to sit back in your seat at this point and think... "what the heck is Surfrider doing at Google?"The answer is multiple things...A month or so ago I met with some of the Google maps crew, sharing

Things I've learned in New York over the past year and 11 months, which by no means makes me an expert ...- How to minimize my most frequent commutes by minutes at a time, by simply knowing where to stand on the subway platform so that I exit the train near the stairways to transfer trains or station exits; sometimes a few seconds is the difference between catching the next train.- When you are ha

I found these great graphics on allposters.com and made these cheeky buttons for ya! Or maybe a less off-color choice? After such a crazy week, I wanted to keep today's post light and funny. "Things I Love" Thursdays - This is Your, Our, My New York
There is a sense of ownership of the city that you feel when you walk to work in the morning. You can be standing at an intersection next to a model, a CEO, a street vendor, a Wall Street suit, and a bike messenger, and it's anyone and everyone's New York. It doesn't matter if the model is six inches taller and flawless, and the black suit has more money than God. It's an even playing field on the

"Things I Love" Thursdays - Audible Subway Announcements
Seventy percent of the time, on most subway lines, announcements by conductors are completely inaudible. Twenty-two percent of the time, they're clear and concise or merely decipherable. Five percent of the time, they're bold-faced lies (e.g. "If you cannot fit on this train, there is another one directly behind this one."). And the other 3% of the time, they are surprisingly amusing.*On a downtown no. 1 train for a blogger girls brunch two Sundays ago, the recalled transcript of the best subway conductor in New York City:"I welcome all my weekend customers on my train. "Things I Love" Thursdays - The Empire State Building
It's the icon of New York. If you were chatting with the city on AOL Instant Messenger, its WeeMee would be the Empire State Building with arms, legs and a smiley face. But what I love most is racing along a midtown sidewalk at your New Yorker-with-a-purpose pace, zigzagging in and out of the human slalom gates, and not thinking about all the touristy things around you. You happen to glance up. There is the Empire State Building towering over you. Suddenly you are a newbie again. And at a little under two years and counting, I guess I still am in the newbie, wannabe New Yorker stage. I guess that's why I can still look up and sometimes actually stop to take a picture with my phone."Things I Love" Thursdays are inspired by "I Love New York" (BNY, February 14, 2007).

In a city full of 20-somethings who'd rather be single in New York City than married in Ohio, I attended my second Anti-Valentine's Day celebration in row. I'm not a romance antagonist, as I noted last year. In fact, I love genuine expressions of love. I'm just not a fan of consumer marketing-driven holidays. So I guess I don't like any holidays, but Valentine's Day in particular is the one that feels the most forced and insincere of all. It's the day when you say I love you because you have to.I gathered with about two dozen friends and friends of friends at Divine Bar on West 54th Street. It was my second best Valentine's Day ever. "What I love about New York is …"Over the past year and a half, I have heard that sentiment - in varying grammatical structures - initiated without my prompting and completed in dozens of different ways.Last night, my coworker David and his boyfriend Christopher hosted a holiday party in their gorgeous Upper West Side apartment. This was the fourth or fifth holiday party I've attended this month, and it was my favorite for two reasons: 1) I received a set of four Williams-Sonoma All-Purpose Balloon Wineglasses in the gift exchange, and 2) the party was at David and Christopher's. Their one-bedroom, for which they pay well over $2000 a month, is my favorite of all of my friends and coworkers in Manhattan. It probably doesn't hurt that it has the exquisite decorative touches of a not-too-trendy, fashion-forward gay couple. But the layout is just right for two people with all of the quintessential New York effects: exposed brick on opposite walls, tiny kitchen off of the shared

      “Things I Love” Thursdays - It’s a Small World
I am quite certain that Walt Disney came up with the theme after spending time in New York. It can feel like a small world if you run into someone in Pobunk, Nowhere, but the big city intensifies the small world feeling because it seems like it should be less likely to run into a random person from your present or past in such a crowded, busy place, where skyscrapers dominate the skyline reducing you to a figurative needle in a concrete haystack.Yet small world tendencies are so New York. Aside from coming into daily contact with almost every culture on the planet within 22.7 square miles, over the last year Terrence and I have shared separate A-train reunions (1 and 2), my co-worker Jenny and I met a guy at Bryant Park Café who had been an elementary school student in West Chester under Jenny’s mother, I discovered a second or third-ish cousin (by marriage) works with me in another division of the same company (3), my co-worker Scott went to high school in North Carolina with my be

So here is how a moment in New York feels more magical than anywhere else in the world. Last night, I received great news that would have been good to hear anywhere, but to receive it while walking through the Village in a Halloween costume on a brisk New York night felt iconic - and ironic - in ways I can't describe. Maybe because this is my life, and this is New York.I was exiting the train station at Christopher Street-Sheridan Square between Marilyn Monroe and Cat in the Hat when my phone rang. I am not a habitual call screener, but I am also not one of those people who feels the need to answer my cellphone every time it rings, and I was in no mood to chat. I wasn't feeling irascible, but to briefly describe the atmosphere, I was amidst an intense crowd created by the Halloween Parade on Sixth Avenue, in which the scuffle to either enter or exit the train station prompted one stranger to yell at another: "Bitch! I will slap you!"But since my best friend's name popped up in the c

New Book for Thursdays With Jesus!
Every Thursday from 10:30 until noon, a growing group of folks discuss a book of interest. So far we have read Marcus Borg's Jesus: Uncovering the Life, Teachings, and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary, John Shelby Spong's, Jesus for the Non-Religious, and John Nash (a church member), Quest for the Soul. Beginning Thursday, August 2nd, we are going to read John Dominic Crossan's latest, God and Empire: Jesus Against Rome, Then and Now. Progressive book studies are happening all over the country, both within congregations and without. If you are in the neighborhood you are certainly welcome to come to this one. But if you are not in the neighborhood, consider starting one of your own! You don't need a clergy type to lead it.

Well, today is Thursday. Last night we had Flyball practice. I brought Levi again. He had fun, even though he’s crated during practice. He gets to run around in between, and before and after. And, he got to play with his boyfriend, Raygen, the white with red speckles cattle dog. Levi never plays with dogs, so him playing with Raygen is quite amazing! We love to see it. Chase is too dainty on the box. He’s careful. Needs to be more exuberant. However, I’d like him to be fast and coordinated without being really hyper about it. Drive in control, with speed and confidence. We need that for agility, too. So we’ll see about practicing that. Agility trial this weekend, 3 dayer, should be fun!

Time Magazine is doing a whole issue on living green Jimmy Carter levy’s attacks against the current administration - this is good news for a few reasons, mostly because we live in a country where a former leader can accuse the current administration of blunders and not get killed. Japan to make cars run on Sake - this = awesome. Cyborg Soilders are on the way this excites the sci-fi nerd in me. Virgin shark gives birth - Proves the gospel story??? Maybe it doesn’t, but it is incredible.

This is the book's description: Writing from his prison cell in Nazi Germany in 1945 Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young German theologian, sketched a vision of what he called "religionless Christianity."
