The Lazy Thumb Cell Phone Concept Is Incredibly Minimalistic, Just Might Work…
I definitely wouldn’t mind a phone that requires little to no tactile simulation (n/h). Instead of a QWERTY keypad, this Koo Ho Shin concept phone has only three buttons – one button for calling, the second button for checking missed calls and the third button to check voice mail. The person to person and the [...]

Green Thumb Yoga | Qualicum Beach
This past weekend the sun was out and I really felt the need to get out and garden. I pulled out my last year's Mothers Day gift - a portable green house and started filling the trays with starter mix and seeds. Hopefully most of the new seeds will germinate and I will be ready for transplanting outdoors in six weeks. I know there are many other people itching to get out and garden and ti - R

Green Thumb Sunday - Thistle Macro with Bee
Thistle Macro with Bee for Green Thumb SundayGreen Thumb Sunday BlogrollHow to join Green Thumb SundayAnother image from last summer - a macro shot of Purple Thistle. There was quite a patch of these pretty purple beauties and they were surrounded by little bees.I had never seen this type of bee before - they had the most beautiful metallic green color on their backs.Their little pollen sacks were filled to overflowing as they hovered around the flower tops.It was very hard to get a photo of them as they were very quick, and every photo kept coming out blurry as they flew around.I set a higher shutter speed to catch them in action, but the depth of field ended up suffering for it - the back of the flower isn't in focus.Macro photography is tricky to begin with as the DOF is usually very sha

AYear On And A Few Changes - Green Thumb Sunday
How To Join Green Thumb SundayGreen Thumb Sunday BlogrollOr checkout Green Thumb Sunday on Technorati Well today The Green Fingered Photographer is a year old, I have found it to be a fascinating year, meeting loads of interesting and like minded people from all over the world, learning plenty of new things and generally enjoying myself. The idea of the blog was initially to show you our trials and tribulations of growing vegetables in our back garden, from that it has evolved to cover all sorts of topics that are of interest to me. I hope you have enjoyed the blog so far and I'm looking forward to another year of blogging with you all. My First post was about choosing which flower bed to turn into the vegetable patch. Once chosen it was cleared and planted with vegetables. 2007 turned out

Sore Thumb Finds Escape in the Dish Soap
I just finished up the dishes - all of them. I actually scrubbed a couple of pans and dried them and put them away rather than letting them soak again. Old soggy spaghetti is so fucking gross. I scrubbed the stove top. Tonight, we went to Pizza King since the child support showed up in the savings account (after being 2 weeks late, I thought for sure I would never see a deposit again), so luckily I didn't have to cook (but the dishes were from LAST night). We sat in a booth at P-King and had a Royal Feast and played "Chatahochee" and "Hang on Sloopy" on the juke box. I just did a load of laundry, too. I read the Grimm version of Snow White to my toddler before I tucked her in (I think she liked it better than the movie - the "then she fell down dead" parts actually just made her lau

      Lowell Day-To-Day With Bad Thumb
Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers proved to hurt the Boston Red Sox in the short-term as third baseman Mike Lowell sprained his thumb and had to leave in the bottom of the second inning; X-rays on his thumb proved to be negative, and as a result, has been listed as day-to-day. Depending on the team's decision today prior to their game against Detroit, it is entirely possible that Kevin Youkilis could see action at third while Sean Casey could get a start at first base.

      Green Thumb Sunday - Camera
With the growing season creeping up, I’m thinking a new camera may be in order to take some photos outdoors. A handy list is steering me toward another Canon Powershot. This time it will have Image Stabilization, but I’m also considering a camera where I can attach better lenses, including ones suited to extreme close [...]

Do you have an orange thumb? Fiskars does!
Years ago the average home had two gardens. One for flowers to help beautify the house and the second was the 'kitchen' garden, one just steps from the kitchen to grow the vegetables and herbs needed to feed the family. While the woman of the house oversaw it, the children helped to work in it, weeding, gathering foodstuff and even picking berries and fruits for the meals.Over the years as grocery stores grew in size, transportation became more dependable and we were able to import foods year round, the 'kitchen garden' became a thing of the past.Today, many children are born and raised in the city among 'concrete' parks, no green space and obviously, no gardens; flower or food. Since 2003, Fiskars has awarded a grant to 10 groups across the US to help develop and build community ga

Back test Results of one Rule of Thumb
One of my favorite rules of thumb is that a dollar saved in your twenties supplies one dollar in income in your sixties. In order to test the validity of this rule I used historical S&P 500 total return data from Prof Shiller for the period from 1921 – 2008. I assumed that a person would invest $1000 once in a single year and would not contribute more money later. I would then calculate the

The reason why, is that it involves the community and the green space where I live. For the past 6 years I have been looking after a wildlife area in front of my house. I have been able to look after and maintain that area due to it's size. However I had other plans and thought this would be a great opportunity to involve the rest of the community.(to enlarge click on the images) As you can see large development work is taking place all around us . This development is called Ironstone and will involve some 3000 new houses, a school and local amenities. I along with everyone else am quite concerned ho

In Which I Thumb My Nose at the Flour Shortage
Thank God, my weekend alone is over. I have to say, as weekends go, this one sucked more than usual. This was going to be my first time to sleep in (even just a little) since the time changed last weekend. But did I get to sleep in??? Hell, NO!PS: Would anyone like to purchase a cat? He's a fine cat, a great mouser, very personable. His only fault is that he gets lonely when his children are gone and then feels the need to suck on ones pajamas and purr loudly at 6 AM. No amount of cursing and physical abuse will deter him. (Interested takers, contact me soon.) OK, have any of you people happened to meander into a store to buy flour lately? Dammit, I just have to buy a bag of flour for the first time in three weeks, and it's like the world has suddenly gone crazy. IT COSTS TWICE AS MUCH AS

I filled it with dried teasel stems and hopefully it will provide shelter and breeding places for bees, ladybirds and lacewings that will visit the flowers on the roof . I have added more plants as well, most are alpines so they should be used to the growing conditions they will experience on the roof. I have also added 5 wild strawberries ( Fragaria vesca ) around the edge so that they will dangle over. I have also added several logs from my garden with the intention of creating a focal point and also additional habitat fo

Running Linux from a Thumb Drive
If you ever want to carry a functional linux distribution around on your keychain you may want to look at "Damn Small Linux" (DSL). DSL was originally developed as an experiment to see how many usable desktop applications could fit inside a 50MB. It has since evolved to be a complete desktop system. Some advantages of DSL include: 1) The ability to boot of USB or CD 2) Ability to boot DSL from within Windows or other OS's. 3) DSL can also transform into a full Debian install using a traditional hard drive. read more
