There were three times all year I touched 95," "It all comes back to command, command, command," Hughes said. "It all stems from the command of the fastball. You have to make them put the ball in play, use two or three pitches." As for the slow start, Hughes pointed to the calendar. "It's early, if it's August and I am having the same problems I probably wouldn't be here," Hughes said. "I have to pitch well and everything else will take care of itself."Peter Abraham thinks that if Hughes is struggling by May, not August, he could be headed for Scr

I've been having trouble sleeping the last week or so. Well, that's not entirely true - once I'm actually asleep, I'm fine. It's the getting to sleep that is the problem. My brain acts as if it's going through its second puberty - wanting to stay up all night and party, oblivious of the time. For the last 2 weeks, I have been awake until 3:30 am (or later) and have had to force myself to go to my bed and either read or count the filigree cutouts on my ceiling fan. For some people, this would not be an issue - but since I have a son that likes to wake up at the rooster's first crow, my eyes don't really force themselves open until after the second cup of coffee. Then I'm all good.I think it's because I cut sugar out of my diet. Not only have I lost 17 pounds in the last month, I've begun to

Just another fence thrown round the field
I was trying to remember the first book of poetry I bought. I don't have it anymore but it was a collection by the Glasgow poet, Tom Leonard. I bought it because it contained a lengthy poem with an equally lengthy title, 'A priest came on at Merkland Street: a very thoughtful poem, being a canonical penance for sufferers of psychosomatic asthma' (and being an asthma sufferer I was curious), but it really wasn't that particular poem that caught my interest, rather it was a set of poems called 'Six Glasgow Poems'.What you have to remember is the poetry I had been exposed to up until this point. We'd probably just finished the British War Poets, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Rupert Brooke (Owen was a definite early influence) and were about to get introduced to Philip Larkin and Ted Hughes, who, probably for that reason, I have always paired-up in my mind even though they were very different people and poets. I had never read or heard read anything that could be described as

Half-Burnt Corpses Thrown in Ditch by Crematorium to Save Fuel
Due to China’s fuel crisis a crematorium was dumping half-burned corpses in a nearby ditch in order to save on diesel fuel costs, according to a Hong Kong newspaper on Friday.  The residents in Hengyang County noticed a bad smell coming from the crematorium and had people go and investigate. The South China Morning Post said that what they found was “crematorium workers putting half-burnt human remains and organs in plastic bags and throwing them into a nearby ditch.”  One of the village representatives, Xiao Gaoyi, said, “As the price of diesel rose, we saw more and more bags thrown out from the crematorium.” The reason is because China is suffering its worst fuel crisis in four years, resulting in about a 10% price increase in domestic gasoline and diesel fuel.  In many parts of China the fuel was rationed and resulted in long queues at some petrol stations. I am not sure what, if any, actions have been taken towards the crematorium.  Some of the vil

Should Italy be thrown out of Euro 2008?
Italy are the football World Cup holders, but recently the tragic events resulting from an upsurge of violence rather confirms what many of us have known for a long time, and that is, the culture of “il calico” or football which has becomed poisoned by various scandals, is being ignored by UEFA. In January of this year their football world was rocked when an official from amateur club Sammartinese was killed when he was caught up in a fight between players and fans. Barely a month later the Italian Football Federation suspended all Serie A matches after Filippo Raciti, a policeman, was struck by an explosive device and killed at the Sicilian derby between Catania and Palermo. It's road rage the aboriginal way - presumably, and before I'm accused of being a racist, I'm merely wondering who else would use ceremonial spears in Australia, although the story very carefully avoids to say anything about the ethnicities of the people involved in this bizarre incident in the Northern Territory: The incident happened along Matthew Flinders Way in Nhulunbuy about 7.30pm on Wednesday. The offenders allegedly pursued the other vehicle and threatened its two male occupants as they drove towards the mining town. They followed close behind them with their high beam on before speeding up to pull alongside the car when one of the men leaned out of the window and launched a 2.5m-long spear. The ceremonial spear hit the driver's door, police said. The victims - two males aged 18 and 22 - told police they were forced to speed up and overtake cars with haste to get to the nearest police station. It came straight from their spiritual leader, Tuan Guru Dato’ Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat himself. To date however, MalaysiaKini has not said anything about this. Funny, isn’t it? Maybe Raja Petra Kamarudin’s posting was a little bit too hot for them to handle. As Malaysia’s leading online alternative news provider, I expected them to be the first to highlight Raja Petra Kamarudin’s story on their website. Hmm… Wonder what’s going on over there…Stay tuned, folks!Technorati Tags: umno, raja petra kamarudin, pas, harakahdaily, malaysia

Raja Petra Kamarudin has thrown down the gauntlet to UMNO!
I regularly read Malaysia Today, Raja Petra Kamarudin’s blog. I read it on daily basis for years now and suffice to say that I’m used to his aggressive ‘no holds barred' style of writing.Yesterday however, he gave me the shock of my life! We all know that his past writings have pissed off some folks in UMNO (the largest political party in Malaysia) and they have launched numerous counterattacks against Raja Petra Kamarudin as we have all read and see in the local daily newspapers and television news channels.Yesterday, I saw a new side of Raja Petra Kamarudin. Unlike most other coward Malaysian political bloggers who would launch attacks and then go into hiding somewhere (hit and run) when the heat is getting to hot for them, Raja Petra Kamarudin however stand his ground like a true gentleman! As matter of fact, he has thrown down the gauntlet to those who chided him. Raja Petra Kamarudin has made it very clear yesterday that he is willing to go all the way; he is willing to fac

It will be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in January 2008. Woman and child thrown off plane because mom wouldn't drug child (video)
This is a pretty obvious case of over reaction by a flight crew, more specifically a flight attendant annoyed by a talkative toddler. The flight attendant evidently suggested that the mother drug the toddler, who was saying "Bye bye plane" while she was giving her safety briefing, with baby benadryl to shut him up. When the mother, justifiably so in my opinion, said she would not drug the child the flight attendant told the pilot the woman had threatened her and the plane was turned around and returned to the airport. This happened on an Xpress Jet plane which contracts local routes through Continental Airlines. ~RJH Breitbart TV video link

Woman Injured By Akon Fan Thrown Off Stage Speaks
Woman Injured By Akon Fan Thrown Off Stage SpeaksAudience members said the trouble started when a spectator lobbed something at Akon during a concert Sunday at Dutchess Stadium and the 34-year-old singer asked the crowd to point out the culprit. A security guard picked out a 15-year-old and sent him up to the stage, where Akon hoisted him onto his shoulders and flung him back into the audience, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported Thursday. The boy landed on Abby Rosa, who told the newspaper she quickly felt a headache and blurry vision and was later diagnosed with a concussion. She said she has hired a lawyer and spoke to Fishkill police about the incident, and that she wants an apology from Akon. Fishkill Police Detective Lt. John Berlingieri said no criminal charges had been filed against Akon. And the singer’s attorney, Benjamin Brafman, released a statement saying there was no basis for criminal charges. But Berlingieri said police want to talk to the teen, whose name has not been

Fans Throw Garbage At Gordon, Thrown Out
Despite what you think about the quality of NASCAR's product on the track. It's not a place for your garbage. Yes, even if Jeff Gordon wins. That's the lesson 14 trash throwing fans learned the fast way.Talladega Superspeedway has permanently banned 14 fans from buying tickets at the speedway following their arrests Sunday for throwing objects on the track after Jeff Gordon's victory in the Aaron's 499. The fans were charged with disorderly conduct Sunday and posted bond at the track's jail facilities, Talladega County Sheriff Jerry Studdard said. Track officials can't prevent the 14 fans from buying tickets through a third party. A number of fans began throwing beer cans after Gordon won the race under caution, passing the late Dale Earnhardt -- a Talladega favorite -- in career wins. Talladega officials had issued warnings before the race that fans caught throwing objects over the fence separating the grandstands from the track would be arrested.Related:Fourteen fans

Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie thrown off jet
Lead singer from the Black Eyed Peas Fergie was stopped from boarding a jet for being too drunk. The 31 year old was all set to fly from LA to Britain with fellow bandmates, when staff from the airline had noticed that she was acting strange and slurring her words. She was even having trouble to stand and falling all over the place, according to a witness. When staff refused Fergie from getting on the plane, she then started to rant at the staff but this was more embarrassing for the singer as she could not sting one sentence together. The Virgin Atlantic flight was delayed for about an hour, as her luggage had to be removed from the plane

I've Been Thrown Out Of Better Places Than This
My Holiday Weekend - The Recap Friday: Didn't do a damned thing, other than get a haircut. Rested and relaxed after that... Saturday: Saw my grandma and her husband Lesse over at my mom's house. It's always fun seeing them. Grandma is probably the single most encouraging and loving person in my life. She always helps me to put my problems in perspective. Her husband Lesse is a character, too.
