The Face That Launched A Thousand Ships – Face Lift Surgery Can Make It Possible:
The myth of Helen of Troy is timeless but certainly not less so than its subject- considered a mythological figure by some and believed to be a historical figure by others. In the days when the gods fought alongside mortal men, she was something of a global beauty (to put it in modern terms). While many wars were fought over her in those days, in present-day Hollywood Helen of Troy has been the subject of a lot of movies. One of the most memorable of this lot is the fairly recent Troy (2004) which starred the German-origin actress Diane Kruger in the role of Helen of Troy. It was a good choice as it made the world sit up and take notice of this one-time ballerina and model. Diane is what most people would term, a stunning beauty. Her face is a makeup artists’ delight and to a pl

So I was surprised to see the full force of the federal government's Drug War Commandos brought to bear on some San Diego State University frat boy dealers. Kids dealing drugs on college campuses—how unexpected and totally shocking. But it seems this was the case of a pretty face that launched a thousand narcs. The May 7 raid was intentionally held on the one year anniversary of the day nineteen year old Jenny Poliakoff died after partying with her sorority sisters. Montana's more than two thousand species of flowers and many nonflowering plants may be divided into three somewhat overlapping groups --subalpine, montane, and plains. The subalpine group, characterized by plants that appeared after the recession of the glaciers, or moved in along the mountains from the Arctic, has made the higher altitudes in the northern Rockies famous for their profusion of color in the short midsummer season. When the snowbanks melt and all the flowers bloom at once, the earth is brilliant with glacier lilies, alpine poppies, columbines, white dryads, globeflowers, Indian paint-brushes, asters, and arnicas. The summits are, on the whole, too rigorous for any marked growth of shrubbery, but white and purple heathers, Rocky Mountain laurel, and Labrador teas are present

he Loire Valley is carpeted with fertile fields, crisscrossed by rivers, and studded with hundreds of chateaux in all shapes and sizes. Medieval castles are here because the Loire was strategically important during the Hundred Years' War (when France and England battled through the 14th and 15th centuries). During the Renaissance, pleasure palaces replaced fortified castles as the Loire became fashionable among the Parisian rich and royal. The valley of a thousand chateaux is also the home to many good wines. As you travel through the Loire, look for "Degustation" (tasting) signs. Inquire at tourist centers for winery tour and tasting information. The towns of Vouvray and Chinon have many proud and hospitable family wineries.

I really wanted Jews to think well of me.Today, I have many more Jewish friends and family members than I had in 1995 - largely because of my work in the West Bank - and thus feel less upset when att

The Face That Munched a Thousand Chips
I've added a photo of myself so that you'll know what I look like. A little late for Halloween which is when I intended to put it up, but still. My friend the Very Successful Blogger insists that this is a Good Thing. I think she's nuts a raving lunatic a little out of touch with what wows 'em in Peoria, but I did it anyhow. I wanted to post a photo of Geekdaddy in his purple boxers, but I was afraid that'd get my blog an even worse rating than the PG one it got with this little widget I got over at Lynn's blog awhile ago:No, I was not drunk in the photo. If I recall, it was morning and I was trying not to laugh as my brother and spiritual advisor, Uncle Wil the Pirate Cowboy Hypnotist, took a photo of Daughter and me in a motel room in Brattleboro, VT where we were ignoring police SWAT and K-9 teams who were having some kind of a conference there. We were getting ready to take Daughter down the road apiece to the Mary Meyer Toy Shop and Museum in Townshend.Come to think of it,

      Land of a thousand smiles
Here's what I learnt reccently; going to Thailand can be considered exotic to some people. It may be true in some sense, I mean I'm sure the land has alot to show of its exotism, just that Bangkok was a little....well, less than expected. When we first touched down, I'd expected warm friendly smiles greeting us at the airport. What we received was however, a rather hostile custom check. I couldn't help but wonder was that a repercussion of a political tension between Singapore and Thailand. You know, i get sensitive about these things. If you really hate someone to the extend of burning their national flag, could you possibly put behind that animosity easily even if it's a year ago. Anyway, throughout the trip I became wary not to reveal our national status. That aside, Bangkok can be a lovely place with beautiful people. I enjoy the cheap taxis rides amidst the heavy traffic jam. Now, we all know how infamous traffic in Bangkok can be. The jam is really something you wouldn't wa

Jesus Wants You To Shop the Ten Thousand Villages
First Presbyterian of Elizabethton knows how to put CHRIST in your Christmas. The Ten Thousand Villages Festival Sale starts at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 17)! Also, Sunday from 1 pm to 3 pm. There will even be some African drumming to keep you in that shopping rhythm Sunday afternoon. This is a Fair Trade Sale. Proceeds will go to artisans from countries that have had the crap kicked out of them by "Christ-Centered" corporate interests. This is from the Ten Thousand Villages Website:In the end though, the real definition of our fair trading, and the proof of its effectiveness, is demonstrated in the stories of the artisans we get to know.Maya Halder, a woman who lives in Agailjhara, Bangladesh and makes palm leaf star garlands for Ten Thousand Villages, is a good example of what we strive to accomplish through alternative fair trade. She said this to Anita Fieguth, an MCC volunteer living and working in Bangladesh at the

      One thousand (!)
Did you know that the letter A does not appear in the English spelling of any number lower than “one thousand”? Oh, the trivial gifts the Interwebs give to me. One thousand. Like, a thousand words, or a Thousand Islands. Or, one thousand posts. Yes, my bloggy peeps, this is my one-thousandth post. One thousand posts in not-quite 34 months. The mind boggles. You know, I always wanted to be a writer, and I always knew that I had an easy style when it came to stringing words together — but I always feared I had nothing to write about. *snicker* And now, in honour of my one-thousandth post, a couple of favourite subjects: Books! Memes! BOOK MEMES!! (Thanks to Raising WEG, from whom I filched this one.) This list is via the Guardian’s report of the top 20 books re-read by Britons. I’ve italicized those books I’ve read, and bold-faced the books I’ve read more than once. The Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling The Lord of the Rings b

In the market for a new router? Read this first. Turn a cheap router into a thousand dollar super router.
I have been meaning to write about my upgrade to my recent dd-wrt router firmware. It added all sorts of geeky goodness normally only available on dumb expensive routers of the Cisco or other high end routers. Time is a commodity I just don't have and El Di Pablo a regular AtA guest blogger and author of Bauer-Power just covered it. Check it out:I got a call at work from my wife yesterday saying that the internet wasn't working. Naturally, I told her to reboot the cable modem and the router. When I got home, she said that the reboot didn't work. So I started fiddling, and checking the usual stuff. Anyway, long story short my router, as we used to say in the Navy, "took a shit."That's right, my el-cheapo D-Link DI-624 was no longer responding to anything, even after a factory reset. All the kings horses and all the king's men couldn't put my D-Link back together again. I figured it was about time. I had that thing for almost three years, and it was the cheapest one in the store at

Car wreck 1, originally uploaded by journeymama. I am still feeling so thankful. When we landed we landed on the nose first and then flipped onto the passenger side. That window is where my little girl was sitting. The back window and passenger windows were shattered. I forgot to mention that the cause of the accident was unsafe tires. My mom had recently taken the van to Big O Tires, where she requested winter tires. The man assured her that putting snow tires with studs on the back, while keeping regular tires on the front, was perfectly safe. However, everywhere that I’ve been researching this today insists that for safety, the same type of tire should be installed on both axles. As far as the guy advising my mom that what he was installing would be fine, I think it is a case of preferring what is legal, over what is safe. Since my mom was putting studded tires on her car, any employee at a large tire store such as this one should be aware of the dangers of uneven handling.

Ten Thousand Villages Festival Sale Nov. 17-18
First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton is the place to do your shopping for Christimas. We are hosting the Ten Thousand Villages Festival Sale on November 17th and 18th. Here are the details: Fair trade is a growing worldwide movement and Ten Thousand Villages has been leading this movement for over 60 years. We at First Presbyterian Church have been active participants in this worthwhile marketing strategy since the early 1990s, and are responsible for tens of thousands of dollars going directly to the Ten Thousand Villages organization and the artisans with whom it deals. “Green” and “Fair Trade” are partners in kind with “Peace” and Justice.” They are inseparable. When you allow a person, or a village, to use traditional skills to earn living wages from materials that they can acquire locally today and tomorrow and for the foreseeable future, they are going to ensure that their livelihoods are firmly grounded in ecologically sustainable systems. For example,

Although it is not completely out of character for Ryan to confront Richie with a gun, I was still surprised. The lead up to the shooting was so strange with Annie trying to reconcile with her brother, now only if she will fess up to everyone about her involvement. And I have to add, Ryan is super rich and he doesn’t try and hire someone make Richie disappear- if I were him, I wouldn’t want to get my hands dirty. Anyways Richie is shady and I’m sure some of his prison chums were not fond of him and want him dead. One other thing puzzled me, why, in the preview for Monday’s episode, did Ryan state that Richie was going down for his sister’s murder- you dummy, you pulled the trigger so it would be manslaughter with her blood on your hands. Adam advising his son on his business and personal life was nice with both of them acting so much like father and son. Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand
The cult of indie rock thrives on the unexpected discovery, and in 1994 Guided by Voices was just the sort of musical phenomenon no one figured was still out there -- 30-something rock obsessives cranking out fractured guitar-driven pop tunes in a laundry room. Robert Pollard and his stable of beer buddies/backing musicians had been churning out stuff like Bee Thousand for years, but the album's surprise critical success marked the first time the group found a significant audience outside their hometown, and it made a clear case for Guided by Voices' virtues -- as well as their flaws. From the moment "Hardcore UFOs" kicks in, it's obvious that Pollard has an uncanny gift for a hook and a melody, and Bee Thousand's 20 cuts are dotted with miniature masterpieces like "Echos Myron," "Smothered in Hugs," and "Queen of Cans and Jars." However, there are also more than a few duds that threaten to cancel out the goodwill the great songs generate, and Pollard is an acquired taste as a lyri

It's a great example of how you can still maximize your time even when you appear to have been dealt a severe setback. I like Eric's thinking and optimistic approach. 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini
Khaled Hosseini, American novelist and physician, is the writer of the bestseller, his debut novel, ‘The Kite Runner’ (2003). ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ was released on May 22, 07. The author and his family migrated from Afghanistan after seeking political asylum. ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ is about two women Miriam and Laila – how their lives are connected later on and they suffer together. The author has portrayed the pitiable condition of women in the society of Afghanistan. Inhuman treatment is meted out to them especially to the characters of Laila and Miriam. Miriam’s mother, Nana too was on the receiving end. The discriminating practice against women – their wearing ‘burqa’ – has also been highlighted. The character that stands out from the rest is that of Miriam. She is an epitome of sacrifice. She proves to be equal to ‘a thousand splendid suns’. The author quotes two lines of poetry:“One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,or the t

A Thousand Chinese Einsteins Every Year - if they are Jewish
Great minds do not come from Genetics. If it did, we would have heard great things from Albert Einstein, Jr. and all the other Jr's of geniuses from our past. Albert then realized that that some force in empty space was moving the needle. A recent article about some scary future possibilities lends the first half of the title to my present post:TCS Daily, 2 Oct 2007,A Thousand Chinese Einsteins Every YearHumankind may be changed radically by the recently developed technique allowing the safe gathering of thousands of immature eggs from a woman's ovarian tissue.
