Thirty Reasons to Eat pHlavor Liquid Salt
Salt is a vital substance for the survival of all living creatures, particularly humans. Water and salt regulate the water content of the body. Water itself regulates the water content of the interior of the cell by working its way into all of the cells it reaches. It has to get there to cleanse and extract the toxic wastes of cell metabolisms. Salt forces some water to stay outside the cells. It balances the amount of water that stays outside the cells. There are two oceans of water in the body; one ocean is held inside the cells of the body, and the other ocean is held outside the cells.Good health depends on a most delicate balance between the volume of these oceans, and this balance is achieved by salt - unrefined salt. When water is available to get inside the cells freely, it is filte

Have you ever been in the middle of a chore and you're happily going along thinking you're nearly done only to realize, much to your horror, that you're hardly half way?Well today I had an epiphany.  And not the good kind--somewhere along the road of motherhood I had the vague impression that because my youngest child had now entered kindergarten I was nearly done with parent-teacher conferences but driving home from the latest four conferences today it dawned on me that though I had survived 36 interviews so far, I was exactly smack in the middle and have another 36 parent-teacher reviews before Lillian graduates from middle school.  Thirty-six.  Three dozen.  Just under forty!  I'm only half-way done. Not that I don't look forward to these interviews, my children have great teachers so what's not to like?  It's a win-win situation, right?  If my child is having problems in school I can't think of a more enjoyable way to spend twenty minutes than discussing those academi

      Thirty Days of Fitness
I decided a couple of days ago to try to do 30 days of exercise a day. (I would prefer it to be running, but my stupid shin splint may limit me) I am going to do something everyday for the next thirty days no matter what. Today, Allie and I did a walk, jog, run around the block with me pushing the jogging stroller. That is a minimum of 50 pounds to push now with the stroller and a 28 pound toddler. I know I have gained weight. Between that and the jogging stroller, it provided quite a bit of resistance. We spent about 45 minutes playing at the park and I ran back home. Overall, I did about 2 1/2 miles plus chasing my two year old around the park. I would have loved to do the Silver Strand 1/2 Marathon this next weekend, but I am wondering how much running I am going to be able to do for a while (Sigh…if ever). I would love to do a marathon in January, but I am doubtful I will be up for much more than a half between now and then. I started back on the weight loss journ

      Meditation on Turning Thirty
Turning thirty isn't just anti-climactic; it’s the Y2K of birthdays. All the fear and trepidation, the nervous anticipation and the excitement of crossing this generational threshold, dissolve into the realization that for the rest of the planet (save those that share your birthday) it’s just another day in the world. Even for me, as in-tune with the universe as I am, there really wasn’t a perceptible difference between my birthday and the day before. Now that it’s come and gone, the following days have been eerily similar to the celebratory one. All this time I thought turning thirty would automatically earn me the respect of my peers and the admiration of many. You can imagine my disappointment when I found out those two things need to be earned through hard work. What a rip off. But one day just doesn’t seem like it’s enough to commemorate this milestone of entry into my fourth decade. It’s for this reason that I have decided to celebrate not just a birthday, but an

Chapter Thirty One: Of Captain Norp and the Last Journey
They made camp the following afternoon after following the Nar River south and crossing a wooden bridge wide enough for two carriages to pass at the same time. Iliad guessed they had traveled a good sixty miles; James knew it would be several days before they reached Sem’pur. Along the riverbed they washed the filth from their clothes until the fabric no longer stunk. Triska took a moment to sprinkle the petals of little green flowers on their clothes, and before long all the stench of the sewage lines were lost. The first night proved eventful. Nobody had asked James about his hand, and he had made no effort to discuss it. Even Triska, who normally seemed aware of injuries at all times, being a healer and all, was oblivious. James sat in the dirt silently. “You came for me,” Laura said, cool and collected, looking at James with her bright green eyes. He nodded. “That’s amazing.” “I do

      Chapter Thirty: Of Dark Interests
James sat on one of the ridges along the edge of the octagon. None of the others bothered sitting. Darl took a position behind Bourlinch as if ready at any moment to beat the memories out. James watched the water as it flowed down the tunnel off somewhere unknown. He was getting used to the smell now. It had easily been twenty minutes of them setting around as Bourlinch argued with himself over which tunnel was the correct one. At one point Darl suggested they just split up into each of them, but that idea was quickly shot down as Iliad explained how unlikely it would be that they would find a way out doing that. James wondered what would happen to them if they never found a way out of the tunnels. Even if they were forced to turn back he wasn’t sure he could trust Bourlinch’s memory. What if he forgets? We’ll be stuck here forever. Darl spoke in hushed whispers to himself. James could tell they were angry, bitter words, each phrase coming

      Thirty minute hovercraft
I have a piece on Wired.com called "Fifty Years of Hovercraft: The Tech That Barely Takes Off," about the history of the hovercraft. If you're inspired to build a hovercraft yourself, you can cobble one together in about thirty minutes. In the mid-20th century, nearly every comic book and issue of Boy's Life had a boisterous ad in the back pimping the joys of hovering which could be yours by ordering the offered plans and building your own vehicle to float on air. What you got for your precious allowance money was a simple plan similar to this one. Artist and maker Amos Latteier used such plans to build his craft from cardboard, duct tape, garbage bags, and a shop vac. 30 Minute Hovercraft - Link Related: HOW TO - Make a hovercraft - LinkHomemade Hovercraft Instructions - Weekend Projects - LinkDIY Hovercraft... - LinkMore hovercraft projects on MAKE - Link [Read this article] [Comment on this article]

Who doesn’t love a little Sesame Street?? That’s right, the show is entering its thirty-eighth season today, including stars such as Tina Fey, Chris Brown, Brian Williams and more: Sesame Street remains (thankfully) true to its roots. Sure, there have been a few tweaks necessitated by changing times: You might notice that the famous theme song (”Come and play…”) has been given hip-hop and jazzy under-rhythms. But the show’s core mission — introducing (and making familiar) to children the educational building blocks of letters, words, and numbers — is alive and well, accomplished in a way that never talks down to children and still manages to amuse their parents. A Muppet with an uncanny likeness to David Caruso leads the ”RSI: Rhyme Scene Investigation” skit, and viewers are encouraged to test their own rhyming abilities. Boxers are known for their flamboyance and creativity, but ironically, the most flamboyant and creative fighter who ever lived has the simplest nickname: “The Greatest.” Thousands of fighters have stepped through the ropes sporting curious, funny and outrageous nicknames, and I want to recognize some more…

The First Of Five Lists — The Topic: My Favourite Twenty-Five Movies Because Ten Would Be Stupid And Thirty Would Be Fucking Annoying
The people who rent my grandfathers farm made an oops while we were up there chopping wood. . . “And if I show you my dark side, will you still hold me… tonight? And if I open my heart to you, and show you my weak side, what would you do?” “The Final Cut”, Roger Waters (1983) . “A list poem is one [...]

      Thirty Three Blackboards
And I wanted to find the time to run back to the beach and rebuild the castles, but time was spent on now, and now was good for now, and days that passed erased thirty three blackboards of memories. The freedom of summer and I am a little kid, I saw us a family, a mother a father and three kids, the southern wind blows my mind, as  my little hand is a holding a kite, and all I can think of is flying, and as my legs detach, I forget the things that I remember, and as I land, I am standing on the sand and I look into the horizon and wait for him to return, and the sun sets proportions, and I walk back home, and I fall asleep remembering my Father.

Eskimos come up with thirty-first word for snow
Eskimos have decided to add another word for "snow" to their Intuit vocabulary. The new word, Natkanqan yilah, encompasses several types of snow, and adds, for the first time, a color. Roughly translated, the new word means "Formerly white, now yellow, course snow from a mid-winter storm that I planned to use as the base of my sculpture, but that's now unusable because it was peed on by that nasty kid next door who won't stay off my lawn because his mother, an alcoholic slut whose body fat index is high even by even Eskimo standards, and his father, the itinerant seal groomer, won't teach him any better." Natkangan yilah often steams upon creation.

      One Out Of Thirty-Three
As usual, I partied this weekend and drank a lot and wore my wig and listened to "The Best Of Al B. Sure". But that really doesn't matter, 'cause I wasn't feeling it. You see, I have a baby cousin named Darryl and I used to play with him and his big sister Kathy when they were little. My grandmother practically raised them until she passed. And the following year, their father (my uncle) passed too. Then their mother's family took them away. I hadn't seen them since their dad's funeral until about three years ago, when their dad's twin sister got in touch with them and brought them to her house for Christmas. They were very sweet and smart and deserved to be raised in a better environment.I told them about Howard and that they should consider it one day. But it didn't matter, because neither of them were doing too well in school. I gave them my number and told them to call me anytime. But it didn't matter, because I was 700 miles away and the type of saving they needed, I coul

Thirty-Two Mile Cable Installed for First Deep-Sea Observatory
Oceanographers have completed an important step in constructing the first deep-sea observatory off the continental United States. Workers in the multi-institution effort laid 32 miles (52 kilometers) of cable along the Monterey Bay sea floor that will provide electrical power to scientific instruments, video cameras, and robots 3,000 feet (900 meters) below the ocean surface. The link will also carry data from the instruments back to shore, for use by scientists and engineers from around the world. The Monterey Accelerated Research System (MARS) observatory, due to be completed later this year, will provide ocean scientists with 24-hour-a-day access to instruments and experiments in the deep sea. The project is managed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Currently, almost all oceanographic instruments in the deep sea rely on batteries for power and store their data on hard disks or memory chips until they are brou

every day in may: thirty-one (ta-daaaah!)
Well, the fishies aren't done, but you haven't seen the last of them! I'll finish the painting up and post on the progress, whenever it's completed. I've enjoyed painting each day, and even though I won't be posting a new pic every day, I'll still be creating like mad - though in June I'll be looking forward to having time to do other things, like sew, cook, and do some journal writing. Not to mention spending more time with the hubby since he's done teaching... :) Congratulations to everyone who pledged to create every day, and to those who supported them. I would love to hear from everyone - how'd it go? Was it fun? Was it torture? Would you do it again? See all my month's posts for May here. See the whole Flickr group here! Don't forget to check back tomorrow for the NEWS!

      every day in may: thirty
I thought I was going to be spending the evening with masking fluid and toothpicks, blocking out the white areas so I could do the water, blah blah blah, and all of a sudden, I thought, why? So I decided to just jump in and get splashy and wet with it. Believe me, I had a lot more fun! :) ♥ May may be almost over, but make sure to tune in JUNE 1 for exciting news! ♥

'Star Wars' at Thirty: Five Lessons for the Micros
Thirty years ago today Star Wars was released upon an unsuspecting public. The story of the farm boy in space that unseats an Empire changed Hollywood, and created a cultural phenomenon. #710: HOW TO MAKE ME FEEL WAY TOO OLD AT THIRTY-F...
#710: HOW TO MAKE ME FEEL WAY TOO OLD AT THIRTY-FOURWhat my mother said to me last night:When I had gallbladder surgery when you were a baby, I couldn't do any bending and lifting for a long time, so when I wanted you in your crib, I would drop the railing and push an apple box up to the side so that you could crawl in. Then I would raise the railing and move the apple box. Apple boxes were made out of wood back then, so it was sturdy enough for you to crawl up on.APPLE BOXES WERE WOODEN BACK THEN?! What are you trying to do to me, woman? Pretty soon we're going to be telling the young-uns how hard we had it back when we had to entertain ourselves with lawn darts and we thought scratchy polyester clothing was a wonder of technology.Oh, wait, that's already starting to happen. You got the ball rolling last night. Thanks, mom.

      Happy thirty
Henning’s 30th birthday is March 6, and my mom will be back in Washington, DC by then, so she invited Henning and me and four of our friends over for dinner, drinks, and hot tub last night. Henning and I and two of the friends stayed the night, and this morning we were treated to french toast and bacon. Mmmm.. bacon. For dinner, my mom made bbq ribs and sausages, and I made some cabbage slaw and spiced roasted sweet potatoes to go along side. For dessert, I made an extremely decadent chocolate torte. Super rich dark chocolate mousse is spread over a nearly flourless chocolate cake and then topped with whipped cream and raspberries. It was absolutely fabulous. I’m too tired to write more, so I’ll just let the photos speak for themselves. (…the recipes)

Potty Talk Still Gets Me at Thirty-Two
“It is the kind of gigantic, intimidating sword that I equate with the big, pimped out trucks I see on the freeway from time to time - the kind with tires almost as tall as me and the big, bright fog lights and the loud, modified tailpipe that sounds like God farting.”

Bake until the buzzer goes off: Thirty years of baking cookies
I just celebrated my birthday last month and realized that I can honestly say I have been making cookies for thirty years. I first started making cookies with my mom in the mid 1970’s when I was five or six years old. My first grade teachers put together a cookbook filled with student recipes ranging from, “scabetti” (spaghetti), to the popular, “how to make a bowl of cereal”. My recipe was for M&M Cookies, one of my favorites at the time. The teacher instructed each child to draw a picture of the finished recipe. They then wrote down the recipe as each child recalled it from memory. Of course, nearly all the recipes omitted key steps and ingredients, but this is what truly gives the cookbook character. Logistical details are not noticed by children, and reading the recipes you see the world as children do. The final instructions for my cookie recipe ended with “bake until the buzzer goes off”. That is when you know the cookies are done bak

Hump Day Hunt - Week Thirty-Seven
WindJoel and Ruth, on top of Sandia Peak, 1 January 2004. I wanted to take Joel and Ruth to Sandia Peak to see the sunrise. We picked the perfect time to travel to the top of the mountain; the weather at the peak was 20 degrees with winds in excess of 30 miles an hour, which made it cold enough for the camera to freeze up. Needless to say, we took shelter behind this building, as the coffee shop at the peak was closed for the day.technorati tags: photo, blog, meme, Foto Pherrets
