Recently I posted about OLPC and the situation with their $100 laptop. After that article was published I found out about a company called NComputing, they are nothing to do with OLPC but have a similar aim - to put technology in the hands of people in the third-world.

The U.S. is just starting to see the early stages of systemic problems in the American economy with the fallout from the subprime mortgage problems. The “policemen” of the American economy, and to a lesser extent the entire global economy, have failed to do their jobs, and this has not been an accident. Laws have been changed overturning the post-Great Depression rules designed to save the ban
It has not even been six months since America's subsidization of ethanol turned into an abject disaster. Not only did it waste taxpayers' money on a product that cannot survive in the free market, it had the result of increasing the price of food everywhere and literally starving thousands of poor people throughout the world. Subsequently, one would expect removing all ethanol subsidies would be

Africa’s rise to prominence in the geopolitics of the 21st century is explained largely by the renewal of great power interest in the region of the world once dismissed as the “forgotten continent.” This great power concern reproduces the same power-play which is reminiscent of the Cold War when inter-locking and overlapping interests of great [...]

The Aquaduct was the brainchild of five California-based design students who wanted to address the problem of 1.1 billion people in the world who don't have access to clean drinking water. The pedal-powered machine transports and filters water without burning fossil fuels or wood, both of which contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions. The winner and five runners-up, you can find on innovate-or-die.Looking at the video, it makes me think... Hmmmm... A typical First World solution to a Third World problem.. Or am I too cynical?Let me explain:- I always thought that polluted water needed filtering AND cooking (or treatment by chemicals) to make it safe.- The filters will need to be replaced, which costs money. A supply chain would need to be set up, which costs money. Is this affordable?-
Living in a developing country brings some surprises. One of them is these filthy rich people. No joke, when you go to Kem Chicks, a high end supermarket that sells items for expats in Jakarta (big choices of peanut butter, whole turkeys come Thanksgiving...), you actually have the choice between several types of outfits for your large house staff. Sometimes when you go to the restaurant you can also see rich people's kids in the corner, tended by their nannies while Mum and Dad enjoy care-free time with their friends. Life's sweet. Not always for the nanny.Jakarta hotel shows kids how to make their own beds JAKARTA, Feb 24 (Reuters Life!) - In a country where the rich rely heavily on servants to perform the most mundane household chores, being able to make one's own bed is something of a n
I just saw a commercial on TV last night about the conditions in some African countries and how we can donate to help. This particular commercial showed how a teen aged girl could not go to school during her menstrual period because of lack of money to buy protection and this means she will fall further and further behind until she eventually drops out of school. This made me realise just how fortunate we are here in the West since when our girls have their period they go horseback riding, or in the unlikely event there are no horses available, they go swimming!Allan W Janssen is the author of The Plain Truth About God at www.God-101.com and visit the blog "Perspective" at http://God-101.blogspot.com
This madness can't end soon enough...German TV interview: US president repeats “Third World War” warningby Ulrich RippertShortly before the arrival on Saturday of German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the president’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, George W. Bush declared, “We definitely need Germany’s help on issues like Iran.”He thus made it clear that the visit of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chancellor, which came immediately after the Washington talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, should be seen in direct connection with US threats of war against Iran.In an interview with the German news channel n-tv, Bush reaffirmed that Iran must put an immediate halt to its uranium enrichment program and repeated his warning of a Third World War. “You know,” he said, “if you want to have a Third World War, you need only drop a nuclear bomb on Israel.” He added that this was “neither a prediction nor a wish.”Prior to her departure from Berlin, the German chancell
It’s Open Thread Sunday here at the Anvil again already, but today I want you to go read an article by British Author Paul Weston over at Gates of Vienna (hat-tip: Sounder).
Here’s a taste:
When Francis Fukuyama wrote The End of History and the Last Man in 1993, it was to argue that Western liberal democracy and free market economics meant an end to warfare within the west, and by default, the end of history.
Fukuyama was drawing on Winston Churchill, who stated: “The history of man is war”, thus allowing Fukuyama to propose that a future consisting of perpetual peace meant an end to history itself, history being simply a narrative of warfare, conquest and re-conquest, rather than which queen succeeded which king and on which date.
This idea that warfare within the West is now a thing of the past seems to be shared by an overwhelming section of Western people, reared as they are on a diet of enlightened tolerance and historical ignorance.
In 1990 it would have been rela
Enough is enough. Ok, DDT has some harmful side-effects, but are they worse than the death and human suffering caused by malaria? It's so easy for American environmentalists and the like to criticize use of DDT in Third World countries when we've already used it, benefited from it, and wiped out the problem of malaria in the United States. The argument of Third World countries aka the "South" at environmental summits, conventions, etc is that they have a right to develop. In the midst of their poverty, major health and nutrition problems, etc, the "North" and developed countries have the nerve to lecture these suffering populations about saving mosquitoes! Read below..."Malaria was actually a natural population control, and DDT has caused a massive population explosion in some places where it has eradicated malaria. More fundamentally, why should humans get priority over other forms of life? . . . I don't see any respect for mosquitos in these posts." - Jeff Hoffman, Environmen
Fabi, the FashionistaDiary of a Third World Fashionista is a cute blog written by a teenage girl right here in La Ceiba! Fabi is 19, works for her family's business, and, against the wishes of her family, is going to sewing school because she wants to be a fashion designer. She often talks of finding fabulous designer clothes for 50 cents at the thrift stores. (Wish I knew where those are!) She likes to be different and tries to help all her friends do the same. I'm sure I could desperately use her fashion help if I ever meet her.Fabi is funny and her English will make you think of any teenager in the U.S. There are deeper aspects to her blog, as well, such as being a well-to-do teen trying to fit in with the "poor" girls in the sewing school and suffering a little reverse discrimination from the teacher. She even included a little tip for tourists here.I enjoy Fabi. I like her attitude and ambitiousness in trying to follow her dream. I wish she would post more often. Take a look, I t
Global warming is a global problem, yet huge disparities exist between those who are responsible for the problem and those who will suffer its effects. Most notably, developing nations will suffer from global warming more than developed nations for two reasons: 1.) they lack the infrastructure to protect against the damage and 2.) they tend to inhabit more vulnerable, less forgiving geographic spaces. To understand this relationship, I will focus on India, a developing nation rising in the global economy, and its struggle to negotiate the international territory of greenhouse gas legislation.
The Inequalities of Climate Change:
In April, the International Herald Tribune published an article on the inequalities of global warming. It states:
“In almost every instance, the people most at risk from climate change live in countries that have contributed least to the atmospheric buildup of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases linked to the recent warming of the planet.”

I was going to bite my tongue on this one, but I can’t keep quiet any longer. Everybody seems to be ranting about Dirk Halstead’s latest round of clairvoyant musings on the death of photography as we know it. Apparently all major camera manufacturers will go under, print magazines will fold, newspapers will go completely virtual and the world will be over-run with video-camera toting photo journalists.
“If the change from film to digital was the equivalent of a magnitude 5 earthquake, the changes to photography in the next 10 years will be equivalent of a magnitude 10.”
Thank you for articulating the blindingly obvious in such clear and certain terms. I thought the pace of technological advancement was actually slowing down. Good thing I read this article.

Remember “Education, edukayshun, yeah, whatever”? Remember, “The health service is safe in our hands”?
Well, Tony Blair is now promising that the NHS will not operate like a third world war zone for much longer, so you will no longer have to go to India for eye operations or eastern Europe for minor surgery. Hurrah!
This is what Our Dear Leader said:-
He said: “Of course there are always ways you can make the changes better, but if you imagine getting to this 18-week maximum - that is for the whole process from the time you see your GP and are diagnosed right through to the operation - that will be a real transformation within the health service.
“But it will only be done if we carry on the process of change… Just like everything else in the 21st century, the NHS cannot carry on as if the world was still as it was decades ago.”
Of course, whether you believe it will depend on how acute or chronic your gullibility is.

The third world war is about oil and trade. Three major blocks have emerged. The first is the Americans with some allies like Australia, Japan and so on. The second is BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China). The third is the European Union. The triangle of international politics is complex and a diplomatic challenge for all head of states. For example India is the process of a tug of war between the Bush led Americans and the Putin led BRIC. China is definitely in BRIC quarter.Russia is leading the BRIC with its big oil reserve. Brazil is in similar situation as India but they are leaning towards BRIC because of Chinese imports of Brazilian grain and other agricultural products.India is scared to antagonize the Americans. They love earning American dollars and Euros by exporting English speaking educated bodies or services to the West. But the heart of India is with the BRIC. Self respect and independence is very important in India. If you leave out the Indian oligarchs in the field of c
