Today is my last day for posting for my month's theme. Tomorrow I start with a new theme. Truth of the matter is I have no idea what my October theme will be. It's too early to think of a Christmas theme. Halloween theme? What's there to write about that topic? Maybe Halloween stuff and personal Halloween experiences - not much to write about. Think! What about my rants and rages for the past yea
Not long ago, I had the privilege of meeting someone online who was actively seeking entrance to a Think Tank. Although he did not have academic credentials, he had a vast amount of real-world experience, know-how and a good many years of wisdom. I had asked him what his expertise was in and he stated: [...]
Welcome to this weeks round-up - everything from drug abuse in prisons and ‘virtual caliphates’ to burying carbon and a dearth of ‘jocks’ on the news. As before please flag in the comments anything worthy you think I might have missed…

“independent and uncoordinated (sic) activity by individual corporations, as important as this is, will not be sufficient. Strength lies in organization, in careful long-range planning and implementation, in consistency of action over an indefinite period of years, in the scale of financing available only through joint effort, and in the pol

Since I don’t want to endanger my source, I can’t reveal the name of the organization. Whenever possible, names will be omitted, but I will do [...]

I’ve been putting out these half-sheet thingies under the umbrella of a re-think tank. I’m hoping to get people to re-think churchy things that have been taken for granted. Today’s installment is called “What is community?”
One of the most basic definitions of a community could be this; a group of people that share something in common. Not “have” something in common, but “share” something in common. What’s the difference? A very significant one, actually. (more…)
After an exhaustive look at test data in all 50 states, the Center on Education Policy, a reputable national think tank, concludes in a report released this morning that student achievement in reading and math has improved since No Child Left Behind became the law of the land in 2002, and that far more states have narrowed achievement gaps over that time that widened them. But.
But it's entirely unclear whether No Child deserves the credit, the report says. Part of the reason: No Child-like initiatives were underway in many states (Florida among them) well before President Bush and U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy (yes, Dems overwhelmingly supported No Child, too, though it might be hard to tell from subsequent media coverage) managed to find a middle ground on education reform. Another reason: It's hard to tell how much the gains are due to kids actually getting smarter versus other considerations. More test prep? Easier tests? Creative number crunching? Could be any or all of those things,

As some of you know I’ve been writing a series of handouts for our church, trying to get them to re-think some things. It’s easy to get complacent, to let traditions and “that’s the way we’ve always done it” set in. Recently I decided to change communion from every week to once a month and have it coincide with our alredy monthly Family Dinner. Being the new guy I had a fresh pair of eyes. We had been doing it every week. It was a ritual. It was almost a social time the way they had been doing it. So, I changed it to shake things up a bit and to get them to think about why we do it, what it is, all of that. To add to it I wrote up this handout. I’ve been thinking a lot about communion for a while and have loads more to discuss than whats in this flyer. Maybe those things will come up as well. But for now, here is the blurb I wrote up.

Last week I posted a document that I have made available in flyer form for our fellowship. The idea is to get our regular people to re-think some of the areas of ministry and the Christian faith that perhaps have become dullled by tradition or lack of stimulation shall we say, as well as give new people/visitors a glimps of what we hope to become. This next one has to do with what is CC. Now I know that this could stir up who knows what, but you need to understand the context of this first. The purpose of this flyer is not to give a full history or to go into all the dynamics or distinctives of CC. It is designed to give a very brief, very basic overview of what CC is. It is for those who have no knowledge of Chuck Smith, the tent, none of that stuff. (People like me who had never heard of CC even though I was going to one and didn’t know it.) It’s for visitors who might already be Christians and are familiar with most of the mainline denoms and what they are about, but are
I’m working on some stuff for my church to help us all re-evaluate what it is that we are about, why we do what we do, how we be the church instead of do church, discipleship, all that fun stuff. I started a series of articles that will be on our web page as well as become flyers for our resource table. The first one is called “What is Church?”. It is humbly submitted here for your consideration.

The Center for Michigan thinks that beer drinkers should shell out a little more for each draught to help close a budget gap for the state. The think tank would like to see the $6.30 per barrel state tax -- last raised in 1962 -- increased to as much as $39 a barrel to catch up with inflation. The group points out that tobacco taxes have been increased six times since the last beer tax hike, making it high time for beer drinkers to pony up. Taxes on wine and liquor have also been increased twice since the last time beer taxes were increased. If the beer tax was indexed to keep up with inflation, Michigan would go from collecting $44 million from suds sales to $240 million. It would cost consumers 10-cents for each 12-ounce bottle they purchase.Predictably, the Michigan Beer & Wine Wholesalers Association is against the tax increase, saying beer is already taxed at a higher rate than neighboring states. Consumers also pay a 6 percent sales tax on beer purchases.
