Colonies of rare seahorses are living and breeding in the River Thames, conservationists have revealed.
The species is now known to have gone upstream as far as Dagenham in East London, where the tide ensures the water is muddy enough to support them.
Conservationists had known of the existence of the seahorses - latin name Hippocampus [...]
...Jayson Stark reports that the Mets covet Marcus Thames. In exchange the Tigers are angling for Aaron Heilman. Heilman fanned three times as many as he walked last year. The 29 year old right hander is certainly a more attractive arm than others who had been linked to the Tigers but Stark doesn’t see the Mets moving him. The Mets initially had said that Jorge Sosa was the one they are looking to move.
The calf is much improved, but it's not right. I'd say it's 80-85%. It needs a few more days (hopefully no more) to get back to normal. Everyone who has seen it this week says to do the event would be too risky. I woke up this morning, moved around and it is still too tight down the back of the leg, and some of the fibres and still kotted up. It is still tender to touch in a few areas, so there is no way it will improve significantly in 24 hours. It's heart-breaking because I want to do it so much, but 54 miles is serious mileage for being in perfect condition, let alone injured. I know I am doing the right thing though. I hope to resume running on Tuesday night, maybe Wednesday, albeit a shortish run. If that goes well I can rampt it back up fairly steeply I hope and resume a full
The Tigers and outfielder Marcus Thames avoided arbitration, agreeing to a one-year contract worth a reported $1.275-million. Thames played in 86 games last season and hit .242 with 18 home runs and 54 RBI. The Tigers have two players still eligible for salary arbitration in Miguel Cabrera and Bobby Seay. Today is the day arbitration numbers are scheduled to be exchanged.

The new Globe Theatre is stop number 8 on the walki-talki.com mp3 walking tour of London. The original Globe was, of course, host to the master works of the best known playwright in the world, William Shakespeare. From the stage of this theater, the Bard transformed British theater so completely that he came to define it. From this stage, he mocked the royalty, the Church and the laity alike with zest and eloquence unseen heretofore or hence. On this day, June 30, in 1613, the Globe burned down to the ground.
It took nearly 400 years, but a replica of the Bard’s stage has now been built, and it is open to the public. Even if you are not a Shakespeare fan, you will find the many activities offered in this venue to be a most welcome break from the mind-numbing array of temptations that London offers. So, if you’re not quite in the mood for anything else, the new Globe is a worthwhile visit.

I've found the most superb site for anybody interested in how the Thames featured in the work of Turner, Whistler or Monet. The Tate Gallery has a 'Thames Views' micro-site

I love drawing but I have no experience of etching or making prints. However I think learning more about this aspect of Whistler (and printmaking processes - see end) will be one of the main benefits for me of this Whistler month - and this blog post is very much a record of my explorations.I'm also taking the opportunity to find more images of the etchings of the River Thames near my home - with images this time of Limehouse and Billingsgate. Looking at the ways different people have represented the River Thames is becoming a very strong area of artistic interest for me.The Thames Set - sixteen etchings of scenes on the ThamesI referred to the Thames set of etchings in my earlier Whistler Mont
St Pauls and the Silver Birches - a studypencil in Moleskinecopyright Katherine TyrrellHave you ever tried drawing at night? I've done it a couple of times recently when down at Bankside as there are great views (and lights) and, of course, the shapes and values all change from the daytime. The interesting thing about sketching at night is that you can't see much detail whereas the big shapes are so much more obvious. It's becomes more a question of how to crop big shapes than trying to find something with interesting design potential within the context of a very busy skyline with lots of detail. The only drawback at this time of year is it's so cold! I want to know where I can buy a pair of trousers with a thick thermal layer in the bottom bit so anything I sit down on doesn't feel quite so cold! As it is although my top half was snug my rear gets frozen in about 10 minutes flat so my strategy is to sketch very fast - absolutely no more than 10 minutes and ideally only five.So
Have you ever tried drawing at night? I've done it a couple of times recently when down at Bankside next to the River Thames seeing exhibitions. There are some great views (and lights) and, of course, the shapes and values all change from the daytime. Here are some sketches and you can read more about the experience on my travel sketchbook blog here. These 5-10 minute sketches are of:1) the view of St Paul's Cathedral through the avenue of Silver Birches planted outside Tate Modern - great lighting effects and shadows.2) St Paul's Cathedral from Bankside - looking even more imposing at night3) the Millennium Bridge and the bridges beyond it looking west. This started off looking interesting and got even better as I sat there when a boat went past......... Technorati tags:drawing, London, pencil, River Thames, sketch, sketchbook
