An American-style Breakfast was waiting for us when we woke this morning at 8:00a.m.at the Namkhong Guesthouse in Chiang Khong (ChiangKhong.com, iChiangRai.com, Wikitravel, Wikipedia, Travelfish.org. The breakfast and a take away lunch were included in the price of the package that we had purchased from Sabai Tours to get us from Chiang Mai, Thailiand to Luang Prabang, Laos. Just yesterday I read an article in the Bangkok Post about the Thai army's view on ladyboys. Ladyboys are ususally exempted from service. According to an army general during every annual draft a ladyboy, or katoey, is considered as a person suffering from a "permanent mental disorder" and therefore does not have to do the one-year army service.After many protests against this definition katoeys now have to show up at three consecutive drafts. The Red Cross of Thailand said Friday that it would change its screening process for blood donors to address concerns from activists who said the system discriminated against gays.
Gay-rights activists had complained that one question, which was meant to target people more likely to have diseases transmitted by sex and drugs, had effectively blocked all gay men from donating by only asking about same-sex relations.
