Phone Number Acronyms: In a Texting World, Let’s Stick to Digits
Sure it’s fun to tell people your phone number spells “WINDBREAKR” but we store those numbers in our cells and don’t think about them again until we lose/break/drown our phones and send a mass email. People texting while driving... wtf?
What the hell is wrong with people these days? Not much more enjoyable than to be driving down the interstate, minding your own beeswax, when suddenly another vehicle tries to occupy the same space as yours. Just kind of makes you feel alive, you know? What's better though, is when -same situation- you see that the driver of the offending vehicle is frantically thumbing away on their cell phone! This is a matter of some import folks, so let me make it abundantly clear: That is a several thousand pound rocket you are in control of there idiot, pay some attention to it! iPhone fantatic undergoes thumb surgery to help during texting…
Thomas Martel quotes: From my old Treo, to my Blackberry, to this new iPhone, I had a hard time hitting the right buttons, and I always lost those little styluses. Sure, the procedure was expensive, but when I think of all the time I save by being able to use modern handhelds so much faster, I really think the surgery will pay for itself in ten to fifteen years. And what it’s saving me in frustration - that’s priceless. At first I thought this cat was nuts, but Martel says that now due to his smaller shaped thumb, he can lift almost anything that I couldn’t lift before - opening spaghetti sauce jars was also problematic and now it’s a cakewalk. Since the procedure helps the man in aspects other then his iPhone, I retracted my previous opinions on his insanity. source Related PostsMouse concept reads your hartbeatThe Xbox 360 QWERTY thumb keyboardDigg iPhone Beta is Live!

      Texting in noisy environments
There's a very interesting article in yesterday's Washington Post about the growth of texting in noisy environments, like clubs, to communicate with those with whom one is physically co-present:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/16/AR2007051600649.htmlAlthough, if they were really clever, they'd use the chat romm function on the Nintendo DS.Here's the article:Staying in Touch Only a Thumb Tap AwayResourceful Youths Are Finding Imaginative Uses for Text MessagingBy David BetancourtWashington Post Staff WriterThursday, May 17, 2007; DZ01As Holly Williams chatted with friends in the Red Room at Love nightclub in Northeast one Friday night, six unfamiliar guys surrounded her, danced a bit and then asked the young woman repeatedly to leave the club for some after-hours fun.The guys wouldn't take no for an answer. So Williams, 21, discreetly tapped a text message into her new T-Mobile Sidekick 3."I sent a message to my guy friend telling him to come get me," sa

      Texting proves positive for transportation
While texting and driving can often be a fatal mix, texting and airlines may be teaming up soon. JetBlue founder, David Neeleman, announced that "text communications could prove attractive but agrees with the misgivings of many U.S. airline executives about the onboard use of cell phones for voice calls." In other words, silence is golden in confined spaces, but that doesn't have to kill off conversation altogether. JetBlue will explore options in no-voice messaging soon. While it may be reminiscent of using a "5 inch voice" in grade school, any added freedom in a cramped coach seat is welcome.Update: Looks like Qantas is doing the same.tags technorati : jetblue mobile silent texting

      Texting Recruits
The NCAA Division I management council has recommended a ban on text messages, between coaches and recruits. E-mails and faxes would be exempt from the new rule but would be limited by current NCAA guidelines.Unlike restrictions on phone calls and in-person visits, there are no coach limits on text messaging. The Board of Directors must still pass the legislation, and if approved at its April 26 meeting, the ban would take effect in August. Typically, the board passes such recommendations, but if it's delayed or rejected, coaches would go back to their previous policy of no limits.I am for coaches being permitted to text recruits. It gives coaches a great way to stay in touch with their recruits. It also gives smaller schools a chance to outwork the bigger schools. If the ban is passed, it just gives another advantage to these bigger schools. Texting overall is a great tool for recruiting. It just gives coaches a way to get ahead of others and get an inside track on some recruits. How i

      National Texting Champ
Remeber that LG Texting Championship a while back? Did I not emphasize the $25,000 reasons you should enter? Well it looks like this 13 year old (yes 13) did not miss it and that ain’t no “kid phone” she is using either. (sorry Mom for the lack of proper english, but were talkin $25K here) Morgan Pozgar of Claysburg, Pennsylvania, uses a phone to send a text message as she competes in the LG National Texting Championship, 21 April, at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. Pozgar, who is 13-years-old, won texting the message: “Supercalifragilisticexpialidoucious! Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious. If you say it loud enough you’ll always sound precocious”, without abreviations. And who said that texting can’t pay off? I am sure that $25k will offset the doctor bill for the carpal tunnel syndrome and also (maybe even more importantly) she has a lifelong excuse to her parents and the need to practice her txting skills. So Mo

Verizon to introduce unlimited texting plans, finally
Starting April 15th, Verizon Wireless will finally be fulfilling people's wishes of an unlimited data plan for regular phones. That plan will include unlimited txt, pix, and flix messages as well as unlimited VCAST. I am assuming Mobile Web will be included in the unlimited VCAST as it is now. All this for $20/month. Not too bad when you consider it costs $20 to send 134 text messages without a plan. So really, you are getting your money's worth. Too bad that Verizon isn't throwing Mobile TV into that "Data Bundle," then we would really have something to talk about. [via BGR]

      Texting and Driving Kills Teens
In late June, a 17-year-old driving an SUV in East Bloomfield, New York slammed head-on into a truck, killing her and four other recent high school grads in the car. Police claim text messaging (to friends in a following car) moments before the crash was a contributory factor. "The records indicate her phone was in use," Sheriff Phil Povero said diplomatically. "We will never be able to clearly state that she was the one doing the text messaging." Meanwhile, according to new research by SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, instant and text messaging top the list as the biggest driving distraction for teens. Seventy-three percent of teens admit to talking on a cell phone while behind the wheel. Where do teens pick up these bad habits? Some 62 percent of high school-aged teens told researchers their parents talk on a cell while driving.

Anti-Texting Key A Key to Teen Safety?
The young woman in a Corolla had the slows, yet was swerving as if drunk. When I pulled alongside of her at a stoplight, I saw that she was texting. As we took off, after the light changed, she continued to text and swerve and text and swerve. Two years ago, University of Utah professor [...]
