WASHINGTON, PRNewswire (April 18 2008) - As part of its ongoing commitment to support Ethiopia's educational system, and an example of the extraordinary collaboration between educators in the United States and Ethiopia, the American people donated over one and half million English language textbooks to Ethiopia. The donation is part of President George W. Bush's Africa Education Initiative, which increases access to quality, basic educational opportunities in Africa. The English language textbooks were developed specifically for Ethiopia and are for use in primary schools for grade 5, 6, 7 and 8.Speaking at the handover ceremony held at Sefere Selam Primary School in Addis Ababa, Dr. Sarah Moten, President Bush's Coordinator for the Africa Education Initiative said, "Education is the ke
By now most of you will have finished your January exams and have textbooks that you will almost certainly never use ever again. There are three main possible places where you can turn your books back into drinking money:1. Selling at UniversityMost university departments have book sales in which you can sell your old books. You can also usually advertise books on noticeboards in your department. This is probably the most cost effective way of selling your books, as you do not have to pay the university any fees or have to pay for postage, however your audience may not be as wide as selling on the web.2. Amazon MarketplaceAmazon Marketplace is an excellent and easy place to sell your old books. All you have to do is type in your books ISBN and a description of its condition and its instantl
At the beginning of the semester probably one of your largest expenses is textbooks. However, there are a number of ways to minimise this cost. Firstly you should consider the three following questions:1) What books do I really need?2) Can I loan these books from the library?3) If I can't loan all the books, where is the cheapest place to buy books?Loaning BooksFirstly I will consider whether you need to buy textbooks at all, as loaning books will obviously cost you nothing. Most textbooks can usually be found in small to medium sized quantities in your university library, depending on the size of the library. However, they usually go quickly, so you should act fast. Once you have got out these books you can usually keep renewing them once a week for the length of the semester, unless some
In an effort to assist college students with the high costs of education, Congress has recently made the next step in passing a bill to help students cope with the price of textbooks.
The House of Representatives voted Feb. 7 to require tighter regulations for colleges and publishers in the College Opportunity and Affordability Act. If [...]
If you study economics, you will know that a cut in interest rates should cause a devaluation in the exchange rate. The reason is that lower interest rates, make it less attractive to save in the country therefore there will be less hot money flows and lower demand for the currency. This will cause exchange rate to fall. However, in the real world, we often see that the theoretical outcome
Perhaps this is the real reason Speaker Tom Craddick is having such a hard time finding workers to staff the new Midland Cracker Barrel eateries:
Proposed math books for elementary school children and their teachers have resulted in one computation that publishers would just as soon erase – 109,263.That’s the number of errors that were uncovered in proposed math textbooks that are under review by the State Board of Education for distribution to schools in the fall of 2008.
There is no excuse for this kind of error rate–even in draft text books. However, I believe there is something significant in play when it comes to all of the problems with Texas’ textbooks: Publishers are too busy trying to make sure there is enough abstinence education, morals education, Jesus, and creation theory in textbooks to actually worry about accuracy.
Let’s face it: the State Board of Education has, in the last decade, been far more concerned with depictions of homosexuality, s
By: Dave PoonCollege students dread the start of every semester. This is because of the rising tuition fees, school supplies and textbooks. Every year, the cost of college is getting higher. It is only wise that students should learn how to cut costs and find alternatives in saving money. Are you a college student who wants to save money? Worry no more! Did you know that you can save hundreds of dollars with college textbooks? Here are some tips that would help you save a lot of money with textbooks.1. Save money on used books. Instead of buying a new one, why not consider a used textbook? You can ask other students who are done with the subject if they have the book you are looking for. There are also web sites on the Internet that sell cheap college textbooks.2. Look for other alternatives. You may consult with your professor if you can buy the older edition of the book. An older edition of a college textbook almost has the same content as the newest edition most of the time. Buying
I had a real eye-opener today when I went to buy my books for graduate school. They didn't have any used copies of any of the texts I needed and the bill at the University Book Store would have been $429.00. I about popped, so I went home and got online to find a better deal.:DIt took some research. I went to the University Website and obtained the title and ISBN of all the books I needed for my classes. Then I researched for the best deal on-line. Amazon.com's textbook store offered all the books I needed at a 30% markdown for the new books. They also had many of the ones I needed in their used-book inventory and that saved me even more. Some of the used books were 90% cheaper than the new copies at the University. My order came to just over $200 so they threw in free 2 day shipping and that saved me even more.So if you don't feel like paying full price, go check it out: (this is the address)Saving you money so you can buy important stuff like party supplies or pay for movies and d
A college education is expensive. Students must pay tuition, feed and clothe themselves, gather supplies, load up with textbooks — and it keeps getting worse.
One Utah Valley State College professor has decided to do something about the rising costs of textbooks. He has quit using them.
Sociology professor Ron Hammond, Ph.D, is staging what he calls a one-man protest.
“I think it’s immoral because of the cost of it,” Hammond said.
According to the government accountability office, textbook prices have risen at double the rate of inflation for the last two decades, coming in slightly behind tuition increases. The average first-time, full-time student at a public four-year school spent nearly $900 on books and supplies in 2004.
It was a well known fact that college textbooks were a racket when I was in school. We only had 2 options on my campus (campus run store and an off campus store) and neither of them had any better deals than the others. Amazon and other o
College textbooks are expensive! Prices have risen dramatically - up 186% from 1986 to 2006. To keep your expenses as low as possible, get textbook savvy, and shop online for significant college textbook savings.
Before you go textbook shopping, whether in the physical world or online, you need to look at the total cost of acquiring a textbook. Chasing prices can save you money, but if you drive all over town and spend many hours in the process, you may not save as much as you think. With gas at well over $3.00 per gallon in much of the country, you can quickly use $10-20 worth of gas to drive across town to buy just one book! Make sure you take that into account.
If you decide to shop online, you can find great deals, but you will have to do some research to find the best textbook bargains. One great free website that many people overlook for buying textbooks is Craigslist.org. Craigslist is a great resource to find just about anything. Craigslist is a free website - one of the last

I have already sold two of my books on Amazon.com. I did significantly better than I could have done at the school’s official textbook buyback. I always check the price of the online textbook buyers before I list on Amazon, though. If I can get a reasonable price immediately (and without paying the Amazon commissions, then I will go that way. This year, I have done much better by waiting to sell on Amazon. Although, that will change if my two other books don’t sell. Then again, I could always just sell those ones to one of the online textbook buyers or wait until next year and try to sell them to law students here at school (assuming the classes use those same books). In general, the moral of the story is to sell your books as quickly as you can. New editions seem to come out every thirty seconds.
Richard Lafleur, the current writer of the popular Wheelocks Latin mentioned at a teaching conference last week that he was considering including a chapter in the next revision of his book that would focus solely on how to properly name a clan or guild in Warcraft or other popular online games.
Several Latin teachers from the University of Cincinnati decided to give Warcraft a try after hearing all about it from the Computer Science department for half a year. They all rolled on a Roleplaying server and immediately noticed a problem.

Providing an accessible introduction to the study of word-formation, this text focuses specifically on English. Assuming no prior linguistic knowledge, Ingo Plag explains the fundamentals of word-formation, demonstrating how morphemes--the elements of a word's internal structure--can function to relate words to other words, and to create new words. Students are encouraged to
