JOHN HEMMING MP's SUMMER LOVING WITH A NEONATOLOGY TEXTBOOK.......
Represented by John Hemming MP Christine Hemming MP did say that her old baggy version of Paul McCartney ( John Hemming MP) would be floating around a Neonatal Physiology book this summer attempting to master the details of the issues at hand. Actually, Mr Hemming was spotted hanging out with the riff raff on the MSBP.com board hoping some inspiration will hit his neurones from Dr Penny Mellor either by osmosis or diffusion depending on how much hot air is around this summer. The equation is simple - no effort and grafting at the books means Mr Hemming is laughed at by the entire population of scientists and medics. This is the problem with taking all Mellor says as gospel. The Gospel according to Saint Mellor of Covern much like the bible isn't exactly accurate. The actual problem with John is that he listens to Penny Mellor far far too much. The problem with supertopheavyGMCcomplainer Penny Mellor is that most of the time she misses essential bits of information. It is for this reas

Perhaps DCPS Needs A New Textbook Manager
If District of Columbia public schools are known for one thing and one thing only it is for not having textbooks delivered to its students. It is the number one issue we hear about from new parents to our school. In an article yesterday by Washington Post writers Theola Labbe and Dion Haynes say it looks like this pattern will go on for another year. Michelle Rhee, the new school chancellor, says she doesn't know yet what to do about he problem but I have a suggestion. Donald Winstead has been the books manager since 1989. Perhaps its time for change? When does this new accountability thing kick in?

Deceit and a new Israeli textbook
A new school text book in Israel teaches that “some of the Palestinians were expelled following the War of Independence and that many Arab-owned lands were confiscated.”  Great news! A step in the right direction! Truth will out! There is hope! Ya? Well, read further in this article at the BBC entitled Israeli textbook states Arab view and you will learn that this is no break-through at all, it is a typically deceitful half-measure that pretends at a glasnost … while placating the apartheid-nics. Why? The book will only be used in Arab schools in Israel. So the text is an acknowledgment of the truth … to the people who already know it while it passes on an opportunity to educate those who don’t. Talk about a two-book solution. And this from a people who stake its spiritual existence from the wisdom of a text. Where is the outrage?

Judging Books by Their Covers - Corruption in Textbook Adoption
This is an interesting article from 1999 on textbook adoption, and whether it's 100% true or not, it points out how much it would help to not officially adopt a single textbook at all. If the material were being taught capably, the textbook itself would be secondary, students could choose either by price or by style or by whatever criteria they chose.

Myth of sky rocketing textbook costs
State and federal legislatures are on the move attempting to lower the cost of college by attacking the price of textbooks. Jim Minatel has a different take on how to help students save on the total cost of college. He has a nice breakdown comparing the effects of inflation on college tuition compared to the effect of inflation on textbooks. He comes to this conclusion... So yes, while both college and textbook costs are rising faster than inflation, and certainly faster than my wages or those of anyone I know, if you want to do something real about the money being stolen from you to pay for the cost of entry for your kids into the "real world," attack the elephant in the room that costing you $4000-$15,000 a year over what "the real world" says it should. The few hundred a year you might save if textbook costs were held down to inflation rates are chump change in this equation, or beer money for our beloved, departed Tommy's Silver Dollar Saloon. Publication cost comparison: Chemistry Textbook vs Thoreau's Walden
Doug Tygar is a professor of Computer Science and Information Management at AC Berkeley, posts this Publication cost comparison sheet being distributed by Prentice-Hall. The sheet compares the publication cost of two books, an unidentified Chemistry book and Thoreau's: Walden. The number of free samples produced was impressive. In this example Prentice-Hall. provides the production costs for a 30,000 copy run. For each 30,000 books produced they have an estimated 6500 free samples. That is a healthy chunk of change going to providing something to professors for free. Of course these costs are inevitably passed on to the student while often the professor sells the desk copy back and makes money. Publication cost comparison Prentice-Hall

      A textbook "Return to 4"
I don't write about every day trade I make. That being the case, I want to be careful not to misrepresent my skills in that area. I have three basic setups I use- return to 4, opening gaps, and BOBs- but I am still pretty undisciplined when it comes to waiting for the proper setup. Because of this lack of discipline I am barely profitable in my brief day trading career.I started sneaking in a day trade or two back in February. Some days I've made several trades and some weeks I've made none. In total I've made 86 trades and exactly 50% have been profitable. Overall, I've netted about 13 beers for my efforts. The first two paragraphs above serve as full disclosure that the VSEA trade I made yesterday was hardly typical. Here's the chart:Like every day trader on the planet, the huge gap up in VSEA had me looking at its chart at 9:45. I started off looking for it to close above the high of the first bar (Trader X's technique), but it quickly started giving back some of its g

Multibillion dollar textbook scandal reaches Congress
This from Greg Toppo at USA TODAY:A slow-motion scandal surrounding a federal multibillion-dollar reading program has its first congressional hearing this week, but it remains to be seen whether the scrutiny will shed any new light on a complex, contradictory tale of textbooks, tests and allegations of federal arm-twisting.A key part of President Bush's efforts to remake public education, Reading First was launched in 2002, giving schools $1 billion a year to improve reading in early elementary grades. Five years later, early evidence suggests that it may be helping. But investigators say a handful of advisers have railroaded schools into buying textbooks and other materials that they and associates developed. The result: a conflict-of-interest case that took two years to jell as investigators in the Education Department connected the dots. To date, no criminal charges have been filed, but Democrats, now in control of Congress, promise to give the case a full airing.
