The results of a survey on family text messaging habits were just announced today by Samsung Mobile. The general conclusion was: “Finding a way to communicate with teenagers can be difficult for many parents,” said Bill Ogle, Chief Marketing Officer for Samsung Telecommunications America. “What this survey shows is that communicating with teens the same way they communicate with each other, by text messaging, may be a great way for some parents to improve the lines of communication. Zipit Wireless Inc. who recently launched the Zipit Wireless Messenger 2 (Z2) at DigitalLife in New York City last September has announced that it will make available a text-messaging plan for its Zipit Wireless Messenger 2. The Z2 is a portable, fat wallet size Wi-Fi instant messaging (IM) device that provides access to IM without typing up or being tied to, the family computer. The Boston Police Department (BPD) has implemented the usage of cell phones to anonymously report crime by text messaging.  The Crime Stoppers Mobile Program allows residents to anonymously text information to the police about any criminal activity.  To text a tip to the BPD Crime Stoppers Mobile Program, of course callers must have text messaging enabled on their phone and be subscribed to a participating cell phone carrier. To send a tip, users must text the word TIP to the number 27463, which spells the word CRIME on the phone's keypad.The BPD recommends users to always delete all text messages from 27463 from your text message in box and out box for their safety. It's certain that if this program is successful other police departments across the country will follow Boson's lead.

David Neeleman, JetBlue founder and chief executive, shares the misgivings of many US airline executives about the on-board use of mobile phones for voice calls, but said text communications could prove attractive. Now this follows the recent announcement of Australian Airline, Quantas, testing inflight sms on a very limited basis. I am not sure how this would follow the recent FCC ruling on the use of cellular technology but it does shed more light on the idea and potential further U.S. testing on the issue.
