Christopher Hitchens recently appeared on Hardball with Chris Matthews to have a debate, if you can call it that, with William Donohue (Grand Inquisitor of the Catholic League in the United States) on Mother Teresa and her lack of faith. How did it go? From here Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who has been put on the “fast track” to sainthood, was so tormented by doubts about her faith that she felt “a hypocrite,” it has emerged from a book of her letters to friends and confessors. Shortly after beginning her work in the slums of Calcutta, she wrote: “Where is my faith? Even deep down there is nothing but emptiness and darkness. If there be a God — please forgive me.” Whew! I thought I was only one! Seriously, how can one have no doubts about God when God can't be sensed by those five senses we use for everything else? To doubt is to think. To think is to grow. Everybody should doubt God every once in a while- on purpose.

It is safe to say that no one in the world caused more harm for poor people in the slums of Calcutta than that holy bitch herself: the arch-fundamentalist Mother Teresa. Her life was a tragic nightmare (at least in the effects it had for all the victims of her activities) from start to finish, and now, to cap it all off, it emerges that she herself struggled all her life with a "terrible darkness within me, as if everything was dead." Was Mother Teresa an atheist? Andrew Brown at Comment is Free asks this intriguing question in light of recently released writings which show that Mother Teresa had serious questions about her faith. Brown writes, "...even as she was receiving the Nobel prize, she asked her confessor to pray for her because she could feel nothing when she prayed herself and no longer had any experience of God."The implications are certainly interesting to ponder, although I would be shocked if this new information changed any minds.
