At the state's western border is Memphis, the home of "the King" Elvis Presley, Sun Studios, and the birthplace of both Rock & Roll and the Blues, which inspires us because they are distinct American creations. And closer to home, the mountains of Appalachia sing from our experience, our heart, and our spiri

Louisville’s Defense Sends Tennessee Packing 79-60
It just wasn’t Tennessee’s night.  After all, when your team shoots 34% from the floor, you stand little chance of winning a ballgame; Thursday night’s contest against Louisville validated that point.  Louisville coach Rick Pitino utilized different defenses, and the end result was a resounding, 79-60 win over Tennessee in the NCAA East Regional semifinal [...]

      Tennessee Groceries Want Wine Sales
The Tennessee Grocers and Convenience Store Association is launching a public relations and lobbying effort to try to get the state legislature to approve the sale of wine in grocery stores.Using the slogan “Red, White and Food,” the group says the measure would benefit consumers and help their businesses. The group points out that 33 states currently allow wine to be sold in food stores. The move to bring wine to grocery stores would not change the law in dry counties in the state. In the past similar measures have died in committee. Grocers say that lobbyists for liquor store interests have been able to beat back the bills.

Mention a museum and the first word that often pops into mind is… BORING!  To most people, museums are all the same, full of old stuff to act as a constant reminder of our past, our heritage, when the truth is we will never really forget about the past because we study it all the [...]

Memphis and Tennessee Playing For Critics Respect On Saturday
In what could be the best game of this season to date, there is more on the line than just in state bragging rights for the Tigers and Vols. Memphis and Tennessee are the top two teams in both polls this week, but they are still looking for the respect that comes with being that high in the polls. Many people I have talked to see Memphis as the default #1 team because they are undefeated but others think they are overrated because they play in a "mid major" conference. As for Tennessee no on is complaining about the Vols at all. In fact, no one is talking about the Vols. Maybe its better to not to be talked about I really don't know but this team deserves some love and I don't feel they are getting any. I do know is this, the teams are a combine 50-2 this season, they haven't played each o

The Economic State of Nashville and Middle Tennessee
Recently, The Tennessean interviewed Arthur Laffer and ask a few pointed questions about the state of the Nashville economy, here are his answers:Q) Is Middle Tennessee resistant to a recession because we didn't have the real estate boom and then bust that other states have seen, California for instance?A) "I was on the Governor's Council of Economic Advisors with (Arnold) Schwarzenegger out there. I love him dearly … he's a great guy. But when he decided to turn to the dark side, I said: "I'm getting out of here. I'm not going to watch. I'm not going to be in a collapse."California went from being the third-fastest growing state in the country to No. 29. So, at the age of 66 in 2006 I packed up and moved my company, my business and my family, everything here to Tennessee — a place I'd

Steve Caldwell, the Vols defensive end coach, has told Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino that he is not interested in coming to Fayetteville to be the Hogs defensive coordinator. Caldwell, who has been on the Tennessee staff since 1995, said family was the primary reason for his decision. Discuss Steve Caldwell in our Vols Forum.

Week 15 Preview: Tennessee at Kansas City
The season has been long and hard for the Kansas City Chiefs, and while their offense has been stuck in the mud for most of their six-game losing streak, it doesn’t look to get much better at home Sunday vs the Tennessee Titans.  The Titans should have big, bad Albert Haynesworth in the lineup, despite the fact he has not been practicing at all this week.  Any thoughts of Kolby Smith having a big day on the ground for the Chiefs will be tough to think about with Haynesworth and his friends up on that Titans D-line. Then you have a Titans offense that last week put up 17 points, which usually is enough.  But then at the end the defense had a total letdown, as the Chargers scored a late TD and then another in OT as the Titans got away from taking chances and played more not to lose than to win.  This week Jeff Fisher knows that with the playoffs on the line they cannot allow that to happen, and they will do whatever it takes. Look for a good day on the ground from the Titans,

      The Morning After: Tennessee State
There’s not a whole lot to say about this one. Tennesssee State, not unlike Chicago State last year, comprised a bunch of skittish guards and guys who put the small in small forward. (Zing!) Undersized and underskilled, they were never really a challenge to an IU team that didn’t play particularly well, and didn’t have to. So if there’s anything to be learned from a game like this, it doesn’t outweigh what we saw at Southern Illinois on Saturday. Instead, let’s talk about Lance Stemler. – Before getting into this, let me make myself clear: I’ve got nothing against Lance Stemler. He seems like a nice dude, he plays hard and with effort, and he is genuinely invested in the success of the team. All of these things are positive. That said, I am consistently baffled by the unfettered love he is shown by broadcasters and the occasional sportswriter. Last night, there was one particularly egregious example. In the second half, after a couple of
