Musical Pillars in Ancient Hindu temples
Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the USA have discovered that some of the Hindu temples, dating back as far as the 7th century, had musical pillars. Paul Calamia and Jonas Braasch say that the pillars were often carved from a single piece of stone, and tune by size. According to them, such pillars were “played” during certain ritual performances. In Spain also, Arturo Sevilla

      india temples
India is a vast country, people with diverse and ancient civilizations, and its religious geography is highly complex. To grasp the complexity of the situation, it is important to consider two aspects of Indian life: its characteristic of being an ethnic and cultural mosaic, and the ancient rural foundations of many of its religious and cultural patterns. The process of racial and cultural mixture that began in India 5000-10,000 years ago has been continuous into historical times. Although isolated from the rest of Asia by oceans on three sides and impassable mountain ranges to the north, India has experienced a near-constant influx of differing cultural influences, coming by way of the northwest and the southeast (including extremely ancient migrations from the drowned continent of Sundal

      Temples around Pondicherry
      1. Sri Prithyangara Devi templeViswaroopa Sri Prithyangara Devi temple is located in the Pondicherry-Tindivanam route at about 5 kms from Pondicherry at a place called Morattandi. About 2-3 kms after the JIPMER hospital, you have to take a right turn and go further in village road for about 2 km. There are autos available at this junction also. The sudai sculpture of Prithyangara Devi is about 40 feet high and is visible from a km itself. Under this sudai sculpture is present the main temple. The temple entrance is completely covered up with sudai sculptures on both sides and you have to enter the temple through a narrow gate after getting the ticket for, I think Rs 3. First of all, I didn't like this concept itself - covering the temple entrance completely and admitting people only with an entrance ticket like an exhibition. Anyway, after entering we were pleased to see a beautiful Sri Prithyangara devi deity. I was surprised that a scaring deity has been sculptured so beautifully.

Penang, Butterworth and the Taoist temples
I just returned from Thailand, to be accurate, from the small border town of Betong, about 100km east of Penang. I had been cycling at ease, because it was mostly going down, to my friends house near Kuala Batas. It was one of those days everything went so easy. At my friends house I was invited to join them in the evening to the Tow Boo Kong temple, nearby in Butterworth. I wrote an extensive page about this temple for my Pangkor website which you read here For the bicyclist I wrote another story with some more global material. Here is what happened those days in Butterworth and in Penang, because yes, I also went to one of the Nine Emperor Gods temple in Penang. Here’s the link

During the Nine Emperor Festival I was the guest of Mrs. Pearly and Mr. Chandra. They invited me to join them to the , another Nine Emperor Gods temple. I expected something of a similar temple. Nothing could have prepared me for what I would see. The temple itself is much older then the Tow Boo Kong Temple in Butterworth. Many devotees were around during the festival and it was an excellent experience. The Oil Lamp, 130 years old in Cheng Kon Sze The temple, though small was in many ways more beautiful then the one in Butterworth. While Tow Boo Kong for sure is more beautiful, and extensive in its architecture, the Cheng Kon Sze is older, one can almost feel the wisdom coming out of the temple. If you have little time, visit this temple instead of any other. Cheng Kon Sze is magnificent. Read more about the Cheng Kon Sze temple in Penang

Tips On Visiting Hindu Temples In Bali
To visit temples in Bali, there are few rules you need to know. One very common rule is that you need to wear sarong when entering the temple. There are other rules to bear in mind so you can easily enter the temple without any doubt or fear offending the locals. This is also to make sure you will not spoil your holiday in Bali. Here are the list of rules for entering temples in Bali, (some may sound funny to you).Wear sarong. Some temples, especially those that have lots of visitors, provide sarongs at the entrance. You can put it on before entering the temple. Why sarong? Sarong is meant to cover the "unholy" part of our body, especially under the waist part. (Note: most of the temples in Bali do not provide sarongs, so it could be handy to have it if temple is in your tour itinerary.)Dress properly or decently. This is self explanatory, so, I am not going to dig on that.Ladies in period are not allowed to enter the temple.People whose relatives recently passed away and still conduct

Quake-hit Indonesian temples need years of repairs
Damage to one of Indonesia's most spectacular temple complexes caused by last year's devastating Java earthquake was so extensive that repairs will take at least five years, Unesco said. Some of the temples at Prambanan are threatening to topple and restoration of the entire Hindu compound, the largest in the country, will be slow and difficult, according to the UN culture agency. "It's not just putting back the stones, like a facelift," said UNESCO's Himalchuli Gurung, adding that repair work has not yet started. Professor Ostelio Remi, director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Jakarta, said "everything threatens to fall, from the base up to the top." "It is a universal heritage, among the most beautiful in the world. It has to be saved, whatever the cost," added Remi, who has consulted with UNESCO on damage assessment. Parego Andriano, holidaying with his wife from Milan, agreed, remarking that he was amazed at the beauty of the temples after walking around the compound's

Wat Chaiwatthanaram, one of the most imposing ancient Buddhist monasteries, was established by the command of King Prasatthong in 1630 A.D. It is believed that the wat is located on the site of his former home. The reason for building this monastery was to make merit for his mother. Prince Damrong Rachanuphap noted that its architecture was similar to that of Angkor Wat and inferred that the wat might have been built to commemorate the king'svictory over Cambodia. This wat consists of a main prang (Khmer-type tower) and four lesser prangs, all created on the same base ans surrounded by eight lesser prangs and a gallery. The ancient city of Ayutthaya,or Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya,The Thai capital for 417 years, is one of Thailand's major tourist attractions. Many ancient ruins and art works can be seen in a city that was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong when the Thais were forced southwards by northern neighbours.During t

      Buddhist Temples in Chiang Mai
Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai show off a mixture of architectural styles that reflect the varied heritage of Northern Thailand. Elements from Lanna Thai, Burmese, Sri Lankan and Mon temples have all been used in one form or another. Intricate woodcarvings and protective Naga serpent staircases add a flamboyance that reflects an awesome reverence for the Buddhist religion. Gilded umbrellas, guardian figures from the tales of the Ramayana and stupas trimmed with gold filigree combine to heighten the overall effect. To date, there have been some 300 temples constructed in Chiang Mai an its outskirts. Visitors should take the time to visit the most revered temples in the city, built during the noble Lanna Thai dynasty. The largest ones draw crowds, but it's well worth wandering off the beaten path and finding a temple not on the tour bus circuit.
