So, I began my taper this week.Monday was my usual day off, and on Tuesday I went to the gym. I did 25 minutes on the treadmill doing intervals; 3 minutes at 14kph and 2 minutes at 10kph, repeated. I used to work in a multimedia environment where the room is dark most of the time with servers, computers, 3D graphic machine, printers all housed in one place. Of course, we managed to time our vacation during South Dakota's heat wave where it was close to 100 in the Black Hills where we did camp.WTF - Rattlesnakes??? Needless to say, between the heat and the rattlesnake warnings, we decided not to camp at the Badlands! Could you blame us?Here I am in Badlands National Park - I can't believe I'm not melting - though it was way too hot for our dog to walk around. We're baaaaaaackk! Whew, we just got back yesterday from our whirlwind camping trip through South Dakota, Wyoming and Northern Colorado. Our experience was one of highs and lows and in the end it was all good. We experienced extremes in temperature, moods and encounters with wild life!In South Dakota, it was HOT as hell, but well worth the trip. We ended up setting up camp the first night at Wind Cave National Park where we were but a handful of human souls. As city slickers, we were in awe of the wild life walking through our c

The temperature in Yellowstone is FREEZING tonight. We are staying in a tent, and it has been snowing off and on all night. In order to stay warm, this post will be short. There has been quite a few temperature devices featured here in the past. This temperature logger is nice since it uses one of my favorite temperature sensing chips, the DS18B20. This sensor is digital and does not need any calibration. When I make my next batch of home brew beer there will definitely be a DS18B20 floating in it. Or if I have some extra DS1822 devices from the fish tank light project I might just use those… “The logger probes measure temperatures from –55°C to +125°C (–67°F to +257°F). No calibration required. A PIC Arbiter acts as interface between the Dallas temperature sensors and a logging PC. There are 8 terminations or single wire busses. Each of the 8 busses can support up to 8 sensors. As many sensors can be installed as required, limited to 64 maximum. Been busy on the boat the last little bit. We did a double yesterday, with dives in the morning and then the late afternoon dive followed by the night manta dive. We has the same thing on Tuesday. I have a pool session with some open water scuba students scheduled for later this afternoon.Here's a little video I took of a manta ray on a day dive a couple weeks back with my Olympus sp350. We see these guys on day dives on occasion and we'll have divers oh so excited to have seen them. At that point we highly suggest they try the night dive. Seeing a manta in the daytime doesn't even compare, they're just swimming by. At night they are swimming to you. I do have a little, very dark, video I took of the night dive I'll post later. Hi there, we've had a bit of a swell the last few days. It's down again right now. I went out this morning for a litte dive before running errands. Next week they are expecting a big swell off Oahu. If it's big enough, they may even hold the Eddie Aikau Invitational surf tournament, which is held only in HUGE surf. Here's a write up from the tournament a couple years back. By the time it reaches here it may or may not be large enough to affect our diving much.We're tearing into the boat right now and replacing the fuel tanks. We've got to tear up the deck, yank out the old tank, order a new tank or tanks in and then rebuild the deck... how fun. It's slow right now so it's not a bad time to be doing this.
