      I don’t mind telling you…
I’m Pooped.  With a capital P even. The motivation is still here, but so is all the work, and the projects that went with.  I tell ya, that God of mine… He’s so funny. You know how I saved a boatload of money switching my auto insurance to Geico fixing my own pipes? Tonight I spent that.  On something else that broke. However, due to my new budget plan and savings when the TV

When Mary Gade was appointed the Midwest EPA Administrator in September, 2006 she did something that the Bush Administration obviously didn't expect — She took her job seriously.  After decades of Dow Chemical dumping its toxic products into rivers nearby its Midland, Michigan plant, including Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. Dow has been avoiding its responsibility in cleaning up dioxin-poisoned soil and sediment in the 50 miles surrounding its plant for years, and after wrangling with Dow, and getting nowhere, Gade invoked "emergency powers" last summer so that she could order Dow to cleanup three of the worst dioxin "hotspots" affected by the dumping.  How bad was it?  Well the reporting in the Chicago Tribune explains: …all along the two wide streams that cut through this o

If your marketing isn't telling a story, then it's not doing what it was intended to.Were you bored with your last keynote speaker? Did they motivate and change lives? Perhaps, they ended lives. That’s why you need to tell stories. You have probably heard the quote: “Tell me a fact and I’ll remember it. Tell the truth and I’ll believe it. These are surely must-haves for the incurable romantics.Step back into timeMans compulsive need to know the time dates back to ancient eras. This was dictated by the seasons and his need to hunt, plant, and harvest. Before the grandfather clocks took its important place in the history of horology, people told the time by the shadow of the sun on the meridian line or by the rate that water dripped from a vessel with a tiny hole.Until the 1500s, people had to rely on inaccurate time telling devices. Galileo Galilei opened the way to the improvement of mechanical time devices. He hit upon the idea of using the pendulum to provide a better way to keep time. This idea and was later improvised by Christian Huygens, a Dutchman, but his clock erred by one minute less a day. Being able to detect this was already a huge advancement in

Canon telling EOS 40D owners to expect Camera Raw fix soon
Customers calling in to Canon USA's customer support centre this week are being advised that an upcoming firmware update for the EOS 40D will fix an incompatibility between that camera's RAW CR2 files and Adobe's Camera Raw plug-in, Photoshop Lightroom and DNG Converter software. The incompatibility - which prevents the CR2 files from being processed - apparently affects only EOS 40D bodies with firmware v1.0.4 inside, and v1.0.4 only recently supplanted v1.0.3 as the firmware being installed at the factory. Version 1.0.4 has not been made available for download from a Canon website, so only newer cameras, and those who may have had the firmware installed during a service visit, are impacted by this. The new firmware, presumably to be called v1.0.5 or higher, is expected to be released for download by the end of November 2007. More information on the problem, and a link to a utility that purportedly corrects the incompatibility by altering the metadata in v1.0.4 CR2 files, is in th

Economic Illiterates In The MSM Keep Telling Us It's The 70's. . One Problem. . It's Not The 1970's
Worldwide stocks are sending us a pretty clear message that surging oil prices will not lead to the return of the 1970's, as far as the economy goes. But because most of the people in the MSM haven't escaped the legacy of Great Society liberalism, they keep telling us that high oil prices mean that we are back in the stagflation years (that their policies re-created). These people simply cannot... Click the Headline Link to Visit Copious Dissent and Read the Full Story.

It Wasn’t Me. 3 New Trends: The Housing Lawsuits Begin, Prevention, and Story Telling.
As human nature would have it, we love hearing stories in narrative form. From our evolutionary history, story telling has always been a way of passing on the past to future generations. We are good at this. In fact, that is why we thrive in reading novels and movies with a consistent arc and are able to quickly empathize with a lifetime of events and emotions in a book in 2 weeks or 2 hours via a movie. When we read enthralling stories our mind quickly can see the potential future for characters. “Don’t go there!” as we try to warn a character facing doom. Any good author has the ability to lay enough groundwork to keep you hooked. It is the art of foreshadowing. Getting the palette ready for the reader. Ask us to predict the actual future, and this is where we run into problems. Nostradamus realized quickly that vague premonitions serve better than explicit predictions. For example, he used numerology and astrology to provide rather accurate premonitions of the future

Come Out & Play: telling your parents
Today’s Come Out & Play post spotlights telling your parents. Of everything that I have learned about the world of coming out, there is one thing that is the most consistent. The anticipation of a parent’s reaction. Whether it’s Mom, Dad or both - it’s always the same. We expect the worst. We fear the worst. And sometimes, it’s so much better than we could have ever expected. Other times, it is far worse. I was lucky. My experience in telling my parents was far better than I could have ever imagined. When I had the conversation with my mother and father, I expected my mother to freak and my father to be OK. Well, that’s the way it went - at first. Then my mother was more than OK and my father had his turn to freak out. All in all, it was a positive experience because they continue to love and appreciate me to this day. I was never disowned or kicked out of the house. I was never told that I was going to go to hell. I was never told that they coul

      Telling the Gender with Ultrasound
Telling the Gender with Ultrasound Many families rely on ultrasound to tell the gender or sex of their new baby. How accurate that report is will depend on many factors including the age of the baby, the equipment used, the technician, and the cooperation of the baby. One of my pet peeves is that people take ultrasound for granted when it comes to gender determination. Not only can ultrasound be inaccurate, but there is also what I call the "Absence of Penis = Girl" theory. This theory states that if the ultrasound technician fails to find a penis the baby is automagically a girl. Here are some ultrasound of different "parts" for your viewing. You will see that clearly a girl is more than the absence of a penis.Erect Penis Penis From Beneath Penis From Beneath 35 Weeks Labia Labia at 34 Weekssource:about.com

Foreclosure: What are you telling your clients?
I have spoken to people that are not having much luck with contacting their lender in an effort to work out a payment plan in order to help them get back on track. They call their bank as soon as they miss a payment and try to put together a forbearance agreement, loan modification, or other repayment plan.    They are running into a great deal of double talk, slow walk, and hold ons -- then to be told.... send in all this information and we will review it and get back to you.  Homeowners who rely on only this option to save their homes must often wait weeks or months for the bank to review their application, finding out at the last minute that they have been turned down and are now facing the sale of their homes at the foreclosure auction. The foreclosure process still goes on as scheduled (90 days + 21 days then auction).  Some if not most are finding out at the last minute that they are being denied and find auction right around the corner. Come Out & Play: telling your fraternity
Today’s Come Out & Play post spotlights Telling your fraternity When I think of fraternities, I think of a collection of preppy, cargo-short wearing boys with polo shirts who drink far too much and bond over endless games of bear pong and video games. This, of course, is a stereotype. But it is, for the most part, what I saw frequently on my former college campus. I went to a small school in the south in which the campus was five minutes long as it was wide. Our main source of entertainment were the frats and sororities. There’s a street dubbed “fraternity row” in fact, where you can stumble from one house to the other on any given Friday or Saturday night. In my four years at Randolph-Macon College, I never met one fraternity brother who was gay. I never met anyone who was gay for that matter, at least anyone who would be brave enough to admit it out loud (including myself). The small, conservative methodist campus was not the place for us to come out. I

She squat down near the seething mass. Maybe trying to inhale the last living bits of what was, maybe trying to make sure it was all done. Being there in either case.It was then that she knew it was time for her to give up Voice. For what would it serve now? The people around busied themselves, tamping out flare ups, dousing drenched mounds of smoking burn, anything to keep from looking at her. Maybe they were afraid of looking into her eyes, of asking what would be next because they didn't know, they couldn't imagine what she would say or think. She caught someone's eye - they looked down. She said nothing. Reaching her hand into a cooled pile, she brushed aside the soot, ash, debris. Beneath, a char-edged picture lingered; bright gap-tooth smiles emerged: an impromptu picture of when they all moved into the house. Brot

Just when you think you may have landed a prince, you wake up and realize you have kissed a frog. YUCK!!!Hard decisions are a part of life. Here are 7 more in my list of behaviors and attitudes you should never ever tolerate in any man. You know in your heart you should drop him. There is always that nagging sense of doubt. With this list that follows my previous seven signs, again I am going to reference a song that covers the sentiments of dealing with and breaking off a relationship with a loser. Paul Simon sang it best in his hit song from the mid 1970 era called 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. If the guy you are involved does any of this, it is time to re-evaluate fast!1. Does he listen to you? Does your opinion matter? Does he respect what you think? If not, let the relationship go.2. Is he one to humiliate you? Does he think it is funn

We are talking the real deal.Looking back I understand why I was so interested at such a young age, and that is a story for another time. Or another blog for that matter.Anyway, I personally knew two really outstanding psychics. I started visiting them on a whim when I first went to college. The interesting thing about these two people was that they didn't charge an arm and a leg. Also you could tape the conversations. I was both a skeptic and a believer, and over time I became more impressed at the specific accuracy of their readings.I saved some of those conversations. And listened to one recently (I hadn't in maybe 15 years or so). If you want a serious trip, listen to yourself on a tape from when you were 19 years old. lol.Anyway, my favorite was Mr. Dee. These are some amazing shots. A bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge (Old Hwy 40 at Donner Summit, Truckee California) on Saturday when two cars also crossing the bridge scared the bear into jumping over the edge of the bridge. Somehow the bear caught the ledge and was able to pull itself to safety. Authorities decided that nothing could be done to help Saturday night so they returned Sunday morning to find the bear sound asleep on the ledge. After securing a net under the bridge the bear was tranquilized, fell into the net, lowered, then woke up and walked out of the net. More pictures and an explanation:

Hit’s Versus Visitors – What Are Your Webstats Really Telling You About Your Website?
One of the most common queries I come up against time and time again from my clients is the confusion surrounding the difference between visitors and hits on sites. It’s a common misconception that is used to great effect in marketing and PR to dazzle target audiences with mid boggling statistics on the huge amount of hits a newly launched sites have received during its first month.Working in the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and New Media field as a whole for many years, this has long been a bug bare of mine and I hope to dismiss some of the myths surrounding it in the hope of educating consumers when deciphering their own webstats in the future.First of all, Website owners should be most concerned with Visitors whom account for individual activity on a site. The difference between a Visitor and a hit is that a hit is created every time an action on a webpage is recorded or a page is loaded up.For example logo’s, images, files, and graphics loaded as HTML, CSS and Java Script a

The people who need to know most are those that you live with, because they are the people who will be affected the most. You know your children best; trust your judgment about what they can handle Your spouse or life partner can help you research and decide upon a course of treatment. The treatment that you choose will affect your lifestyle and potentially have the lifestyle of your mate; therefore, it is important to involve them in making that decision. The Texas-based De Lorean Motor Company (no affiliation to the original) announced recently that it will start producing hand-built copies of the original at a rate of approximately two per month. The firm was founded in 1995 and until now had specialised in manufacturing spare parts and restoring original DeLoreans. The new car will have some modern accoutrements not found on the original such as MP3 compatibility and airbags and will retail for just under $60,000. There are no plans to sell it in Europe at the moment. There are about 6,000 of the original production run of DeLoreans still in existence, including about 80 in Ireland.

Oblivion Designer: Games Aren't Good at Telling Complex Stories Yet
Although many gamers and developers alike are declaring that games need to be telling more open-ended, complex stories, Ken Rolston and Bob Bates figure that's exactly what they shouldn't be doing. Not because it's a bad idea, but because there just isn't a good enough way to do it at the moment. Speaking at GCDC, Rolston, lead designer for Oblivion, and Bates, author of Game Design: The Art and Business of Creating Games, discussed the difficulties in creating games with complex storylines that gave the player a variety of options. Part of the problem, as Rolston sees it, is designers' "inability to pay off on all the choices that there should be available. It's so difficult to make a genuinely complex dramatic choice." Bates agreed, pointing out that providing the necessary content to support each and every possible decision the player might make is a "logistical nightmare." It sounds like game narratives are in an uncanny valley of their own. What we get in games looks an a

Defense Lawyers Telling Vick to Accept Plea Deal
Today may be the turning point in the Michael Vick dogfighting case.  A source with direct knowledge acknowledged and Michael Schmidt of the New York Times reports that defense attorneys for the Falcons quarterback are advising him to accept a plea deal as soon as possible.  Vick reportedly until 9:00 AM (Eastern time) to accept any plea deal offered to him, with the likely recommendation form the prosecutors being that Vick serve anywhere from one to two years in jail.  Now it looks like a decision must be reached by the end of the day. If Vick does not choose to accept the plea deal, then more charges against him will be forthcoming; Vick currently faces 3 charges related to dogfighting and could face up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.  I would say if he is smart, Vick accepts the plea deal, serve his time, then continue his football career (what’s left of it) in a football league that doesn’t start with National Football in the title.  Meanwhile

Vitamin E Recommended Doses: Who's Telling The Truth?
This is a tough question to answer because although there is an RDA (recommended daily allowance) for vitamin E, it is impossible to determine just who that "average" person is. The only honest answer that any doctor or health practitioner should give you is that vitamin E needs totally depend on multiple variables. Let us take body size for example, the more you weigh and the heavier you are, the more vitamin E you will need to consume. Another variable to consider is whether or not you are getting enough vitamin E in your diet from certain plants and fish. And also note that if you are eating more fat than the average person, then you will need more vitamin E in your daily diet. What is the recommended daily allowance of vitamin E based on? The RDA of vitamin E is structured from what is called the natural alpha tocopherol. Tocopherol is the most active form of vitamin E. While scientists prefer to count the vitamin E in terms of international units, or IU for short, nutri

Clocks Are More Than For Telling Time - They Have PERSONALITY!
Clocks today are subject today more than ever to the question of why we need them for telling time. Your cell phone, whether a new Iphone by Apple, a Smart Phone by Treo, or one of the contract give-away phones from major providers like Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile, all have the built in feature of time, frequently tied to the time of an atomic clock. Even a Sony PSP or a Nintendo DS Game System gives super accurate time. So why do people still want clocks, or even watches? The answer is fairly straightforward, particularly for clocks - whether grandfather clocks, wall clocks or mantel clocks - and wristwatches that are well made by established high-end brands. A timepiece in the history of clocks and watches has always been an extension on one’s personality, or one’s home decor or office ambience. Tourneau, one of the major retailers of watches, used to run an ad campaign selling watches cleverly talking about something like your “other face”. In the hist

We just got a call yesterday telling us that the father of one of Jo's classmates was killed in a really bad car accident. He wasn't even 40.The phone call was to ask if we wanted to donate to a group donation in the daughter's name. Then we got another phone call today asking if we wanted to come to a big birthday dinner for the daughter. I guess her dad was planning a huge bash for her. It's so sad.I want to do something for the family that's a little more personal, and that might help with with what they really need the most, like making dinners or taking Jo's classmate out with us to the zoo for the day or something. But I feel awkward asking, since we really didn't know the family besides Jo going to last year's birthday party. What do you think that family needs most? Money? Food? Time alone? Fun time? Right now, I'm just praying for their peace.

      Telling The Truth
Do you think that BIPS require that people tell them the truth more than "normal" folks? It's something I've wondered about for years. Ever since I was a kid, I've hated it when people lie to me. I would rather someone say, "I really can't be your friend any more," rather than ignoring me.While being truthful is a quality I admire, it's not one I could always engage in. I used to think it was better to "walk away" than to tell someone something unpleasant. I used to find it impossibly difficult to say, "I have a problem with your behavior," or "I can't do that (whatever) because it's not consistent with my morals and values."I believe I was able to change for two reasons. The first is therapy. While my therapist never diagnosed my illness, she did help me learn how to express my emotions honestly and openly. The second is surviving 120 depressive episodes. During the worst of these periods, I felt like each time I "came back," it was if I had survived a death-like experien
