WTO commitments mean open arms for telecoms
The telecommunications sector in Viet Nam is among those sectors which are "conditional" for foreign investors. In other words, it appears on a list of sectors for which foreign investment is only allowed under certain conditions. (The most recent such list can be found in Government Decree No. 108/2006/ND-CP of September 22, 2006.) Upon accession to the WTO, however, Viet Nam committed

Of Telecoms, and "Twisting Slowly, Slowly in the Wind": Watergate Reprised
As Congress continues to consider the regulatory regime necessary to “permit” the President to engage in national security-based wiretaps, it is important to put the current debates into historical perspective. The canvass upon which the wiretap authority is now being argued is the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), a 1978 statute that was a response to litigation that arose during the Watergate era. That litigation, contrary to popular belief, did not reach the question of...(read more)

Single Telecoms Market Report: Eight EU Member States Are Ahead Of The United States In Broadband Deployment
Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden are world leaders in broadband deployment with penetration rates over 30% at the end of 2007, says the European Commission’s 13th Progress Report on the Single Telecoms Market issued today. These EU countries, together with the United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg and France, all had broadband penetration rates higher than the US (22.1%) in July 2007. 19 million broadband lines were added in the EU in 2007, the equivalent of more than 50,000 households every day. The broadband sector generated estimated revenues of € 62 billion and Europe’s overall penetration reached 20%. However, there is considerable scope for further consumer benefits from a reinforced single market, strengthened competition and reduced regulatory burden for market play

Breakfast Links: Northern Lights, Ultimate & Telecoms Revolution
In a daring display of one-upsmanship scientists of the auroras borealis were not content with all the press their newer noctilucent cloud studying brethren were getting and have discovered (maybe) the source of power for these northern lights! Using satellites and magic they believe that they are caused by “comes from a stream of charged particles from the sun flowing like a current through twisted bundles of magnetic fields connecting Earth’s upper atmosphere to the sun.” which sounds totally crazy to me, but that may have something to do with the fact that I’m an idiot. They estimated the the storm powering these bad boys had the energy of a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. Huh! Now they just need to harness that crap as a source of green energy! Nice. Anyhow, the moral of the story is when scientists battle… everyone wins. Completely unrelated to that is the launch parties for a new book… Ultimate: The Greatest Sport Ever Invented By Man. That’s

      Viva La (Telecoms) Revolución!
I’ve said it before - the iPhone was a revolution. The device itself was revolutionary but even more importantly was Apple’s ability to bend the telecoms to it’s will. It made them do things they’ve never done before and most impressive of the bunch was the revenue sharing model. Prior to the iPhone the telco’s pretty much had the run of the show. They were the only game in town and if you wanted to have a successful handset you had to do what they said. Witness the 5 different versions of Motorola’s flagship RAZR2 - every telco demanded a different feature set forcing Motorola to customize it heavily for each one. The losers in the deal (in addition to Motorola…)? Consumers - features were stripped out to customize each one to the particular fears of the individual telco, obviously. It was only a matter of time before the other big handset makers started wondering why Apple gets the sweet deal and they get the shaft. The dominoes are beginni

Bush-owned Justice Department to Telecoms: "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours"
What a surprise! After re-monopoly AT&T (and perhaps Verizon and Comcast) happily cooperated with the NSA's illegal incursions into the private life of American citizens by willingly handing over Internet traffic records, that wholly-owned subsidiary of Bush Inc. formerly known as the Justice Department (checks and balances - what a quaint concept) has weighed in on Big Telecom's side concerning net neutrality. The Justice Department last Thursday said Internet service providers should be allowed to charge a fee for priority Web traffic. The agency told the Federal Communications Commission, which is reviewing high-speed Internet practices, that it is opposed to "Net neutrality," the principle that all Internet sites should be equally accessible to any Web user.More articles on this issue:AT&T forwards all Internet traffic into NSANSA to spy on 38% of world telecom trafficAT&T Seeks to Hide Spy DocsWhistleblower outs NSA's secret spy room at AT&T

      Indonesia to build telecoms network
Seven Indonesian telecommunications companies are set to build a countrywide $1.5bn fibre-optic network that will provide a boost for the country’s overloaded telecoms infrastructure and improve connection with the nation’s remote regions. The companies will sign on Friday a memorandum of understanding for the Palapa Ring project, which will involve laying 57,000km of cables across all 440 districts and is expected to take two years to complete. The project is intended to provide Indonesia with “high-quality, safe and cheap” telecoms infrastructure, according to a statement from the government.Telkom, the country’s largest telecoms company, will take a 45 per cent stake in the project consortium. Bakrie Telecom, Excelcomindo Pratama, Indosat, Powertek Utama Internusa and Macca System Infocom will each have 10 per cent and Infokom Elektrindo 5 per cent.

Telecoms war hots up as 'Hutch' joins the fray
With the services on offer mostly the same, the tight competition in Indonesia's crowded wireless telecoms market has led to a no-holds-barred price war and massive ad spending. This month, the war is about to get even fiercer with the established operators set to react to the arrival of upstart Hutchison Charoen Pokphand Telecom (HCPT), dubbed "Hutch" in the business.Through its GSM-based "3" brand, HCPT offers wireless access throughout Java, to be followed soon by other areas, with promo tariffs so cheap that they make a mockery of the generally accepted price distinction between GSM and fixed wireless CDMA --CDMA has to date been cheaper due to its coverage limitations. Local calls to other "3" users cost Rp 150 (1.6 U.S. cent) per minute, while calls to other operators cost Rp 1,000 per minute. At present, Telkomsel leads Indonesia's mobile market, with some 35 million subscribers, followed by Indosat with 16 million and Excelcomindo with 9 million. Cablevision Results Shake The Telecoms (CMCSA)(TWX)(T)(VZ)(CVC)
Cablevision revenues were no great stuff. Revenue rose to $1.41 billion from $1.24 billion in the same quarter a year ago. The company's net loss was a bit improved to $53 million.Average monthly revenue per video subscriber rose from $96.69 to $113.13 from last year's quarter. That should be very, very good news to cable companies and the telecoms who want to offer IPTV over fiber. The consumer will spend a healthy buck and the revenue per unit grows much faster than inflation.Cablevision added almost 94,000 digital video subscribers, over 74,000 high speed data customers and 113,000 digital phone customer (VoIP). On that note, the cable execs at Time Warner and Comcast should be heading to DisneyLand. On the other hand, the managements at AT&T and Verizon need to be put on suicide watch. Cablevision is hardly the largest cable company. That it put on over 100,000 VoIP customers in a quarter is really extraordinary. If their pace is for half a million new digital phone units per annu
