Noobie dad stumps techie son with simple Nintendo DS question
My dad stumped me with a noobie question yesterday. He saw both of my sons playing with their Nintendo DS game systems and constantly throwing around the term "DS". My dad looked at me and asked, "What does DS stand for?" I opened my mouth to answer but realized immediately I didn't have a clue what to say. So I sat and thought about it. And thought about it some more. And some more. And some mo

DIRECTV DVR forces noobie vs. techie showdown
My mom and dad recently got DIRECTV at their summer cottage, a place notorious for terrible television reception even with a decent antenna. But now instead of terrible television reception they have over 200 channels or pure digital television. Quite a change from what they had before. They also have a DIRECTV digital video recorder (DVR) on one of their televisions. Since my mom and dad have ca

      Sphere Bed for techie couples
I wonder what to categorize this one as I see it as both a room and a very comfortable bed as well. Even if you are tied to it for hours, you can be sure that it won't be a real nightmare. The bed is shaped like a sphere and has a 32 inch LCD fixed into its belly. You can entertain yourself with DVDs and sink into the brilliant surround sound speakers. That's not all. You can make your nights extra special with a little wine that can be placed in the bottle cooler and also a massage section. Well, still feel like sharing her with someone? The red frame of the Sphere Bed makes it sensuous to be in and cozy as well. However, there is a color choice as well.

      Techie Saturday: auditioning your photos
I was once very fortunate to have a young professional photographer called David Hodge as a neighbour. He taught me about how much of the technique to getting a good photograph was about putting yourself in the right place at the right time. Plus just how many photos it takes to get a halfway decent one (approx 1 in 10) and how many it takes to get a stunner (more like 1 in 100 if not more).

      Dreaming of Techie Toys
I love technical toys. I have a lot. I have so many that when I stay in a hotel, I have to bring a power strip to power them all. My laptop, my cell phone, my camcorder and my digital camera… and I’m always looking for more. And when I look to buy computers, I definitely want to find good quality discount computers that will last me for many years.. until they become outdated, which really isn’t long at all. I’m thinking about getting a new digital camera and Tech Bargains would be a good place to look. They have coupons and rebates, product reviews and comparisons so you can find what fits you best, mobile RSS feeds so you can find things when you are on the go, and deal alerts customized to fit our interests. Cool stuff! I need more techie toys… what should I buy? I’m going to go and browse their site and see what fun things, maybe a PDA or something, that I can use next.

My $500 Ticket to Techie Coolness
By press reports, Apple's iPhone is all the rage. Lines of people were outside of stores waiting to purchase the expensive smartphones -- $500 for the 4 GB model -- when they were introduced in late June. Of course, such purchases meant also signing a two-year AT&T contract -- $1,700 estimated. First they had to sign up for Apple's iTunes download service, whether they wanted to download music or not. So now I wish I had an iPhone. After all, I want to be part of the "in" techie crowd, and what better way to say so than with Apple's newest toy?

FTP Client user poll for techie heads.
Ok, so probably you don’t have to be a techie head to answer this one. In fact, probably the less you know, the more applicable your answer will be. I want to know what FTP Client those of you (with their own domains) are using, which you’ve tried and hated, which you’ve tried and love, and why. I like information. I like to know everything I can know about something before I make my final choices. That’s probably why I’m still not quite at the end of exhausting every free trial on every anti-virus and firewall software that’s available out there. I know what I like now, and what I hate. That’s when I buy. Oh.. and it frustrates the hell out of the kids. Bonus! So please, do post a comment and tell me what you like, what you hate, which you would recommend and which you’d advise people to run screaming from.  The learned and the learning alike, I’m interested in what you have to say.

      The Techie Strikes Back
According to an article by Andy McCue in Silicon.com [1], "Techies lack communication and leadership skills."First off - Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhhhh!!! EeeeeeeeeeeOOooooooowwwwwwww!! Oooooooaoaaaooohhhhh!! SSSssssssszzzzZZZzzzzz. and Booooooooo!Heaven knows what sort of survey this was based upon. In a time when IT departments are often stripped to the bare essentials so far that staff can barely see the wood for the trees let alone have enough time to demonstrate a visible business flair then this sort of pointy finger generalisation really gets my goat. Not only are techies dealing with change on an almost hourly, let alone daily basis, and constantly demonstrating leadership skills through offering help, guidance, advice, and mentoring of a broad demographic range of users that to say that key business skills are lacking is a metaphorical slap in the face with a big wet fish.Lacking communication skills? I spend all day every day breaking both good and bad news to users and softly persuadin

      Wish I was more techie
I bought a macbook yesterday! I've needed a new machine for ages as my old PC has been running slowly and falling over regularly for a while now. It's about 6 years old so has done well but is definately a bit of a dinosaur now. So I visited the Apple store yesterday and decided on a mac book for lots of reasons - but the large student discout they offer (14% in the uk) swung it for me. I was really impressed at how helpful they were in the shop - if a little evangelical about mac vs pc (am I the only person in the world who finds those adverts a bit smug?) I'm busy trying to get used to the new commands and interface after years of using a pc. I'm tempted to buy a mac for dummies book - I felt like I was bashing my head against a brick wall last night - I couldn't work any of it out! I'm sure I'll get there. I was on a presentations skills course on Monday and Tuesday. Very 'stretching!' I'm an unusual person in that I enjoy presenting (well, in a training room any

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for dummies; Techie blog reviews
As ‘yall know, I’ve been one of the participants of the Technorati Favourites Exchange (TFX) over the last few weeks which had the aim of getting a whole bunch of people into the top 100 favourited blogs list on Technorati. It’s been very successful too with the composition of that top 100 changing entirely. So far, I’ve not yet made it as the barrier seems to move up every time I think I’m about to get in at number 100 but I’m not really that bothered as I’ve learnt far more over the last couple of weeks about promoting FP than I would otherwise have done in months if not years. Anyway, I thought I’d share some of that with you here. First off, it’s very clear that the way to go with the adsense ads is the big square block that you see on FP these days. That’s the one that all the big money making blogs use and when we talk big money, one clocked up $8500 in March. Getting the traffic up is key to that $8500 of course and wit

Techie teddy bear, a man's best wingman
Echo Robotics unveiled its latest prototype in social interaction the other day. The prototype consists of a Bluetooth-enabled teddy bear that interacts with other techie teddies to alert you when you're around someone with similar interests as yours. For some, the robot-dancing, cuddly bear may be a godsend for those lacking a wingman. However, unless you want to look like a blanket-dragging Linus, the techie teddy may be a bit more difficult to explain to a new date than the expected drunken text messages.
