Michael Arrington / TechCrunch : Fring Lays Off 20%, Says Business Is Surging — Israel-based mobile VoIP startup Fring joins the layoff parade by letting 10 people, or around 20% of total staff, go. Company CEO Avi Shechter says the company is doing well, though, and the layoffs were to ensure that the company had enough capital to get them past 2009.

TechCrunch’s latest post (posted by Michael Arrington) gave me a shock. Why? It was shocking because it revealed that TechCrunch has been sued by Earthcomber!

Techcrunch finally unveiled its progress on Tablet PC that will cost $200 and run nothing more than just Firefox. Below is a preview of all the effforts behind the project. We wish all best to the team behind this project.
Interesting way to wake up this morning is to see that Demo has made noise that Jason Calcanis pulled a “what everyone should know about pitching your startup” saying that it was very similar to something that was written 10 years ago for Demo. So taking a quick look at what is there, the scary [...]

Yesterday CNET’s Charles Cooper reported that Twitter had signed a term sheet to raise $15 - $20 million in a new round of venture fundingIt’s fairly well known that they are out talking to VCs (it’s hard to keep that quiet), but our sources are saying no deal is imminent, and that Twitter is still meeting with potential suitors. The company has received a number of term sheets, according to one source. Valuations range from $60 million on the low end to more than $150 million on the high end. There is, clearly, a bit of salivating going on around Twitter. One reason for all the attention: growth rates suggest that it is now just a matter of when, not if, Twitter usage will go mainstream. Twitter usage has “exploded” in the last couple of months, says our source (this is supported

I got an interesting email last night from David Hissami, CEO of The Whoa Show, who wanted to clarify a TechCrunch Article comparing the service to an Exquisite Corpse, which he felt was inaccurate.
I guess TC author Erick Schonfield is sticking to his guns, so armed with some new info, StartupEarth sets the record straight.
The Whoa Show is a media company based in Orange County CA, whose aim is to make exciting video shows, called Whoa Shows, that star the audience.
The site will go live on New Years Day, with the first Whoa Show, “First in Action”, followed by “The Count Drop” and “Opposite Line”.
First in Action is set up as a never-ending chain of videos. At the end of every clip, someone gives a direction. The first person to follow it makes it on the show, and gets to direct the next person. So Billy says “I want you to scare someone”, Timmy scares his gran, then says “I want you to confess something on tape”.. Johnny

The front page at TechCrunch looks as if it was taken out of the Venture Capital Cafe today. Out of 8 posts displayed on the home page, 5 are related to Israel - not bad for a tiny country in the middle east. AllofMe, SeeToo, Google Israel, eToro and SuTree - read more on VC Cafe.
The last 24 hrs have been wonderful for Techkeyla. Since the 5 reasons review of Mixx, I have been flooded with appreciation mails and comments from all across.I even received a comment from Will at Mixx asking me for what opinions I had on the service of Mixx and what could make it even better. Well, more on that shall be covered in a post coming soon. But for now, lemme just enjoy this moment. Thanks to all those who commented and voted for the post. The best part is the 5 reasons review of Mixx got featured on the Page 1 of Mixx, and not only that, it was sandwiched between two posts on Techcrunch, which were about Mixx. Have a look at the pic below. I have also saved the Page 1 pic for you guys and of course for me to enjoy. Woohooo. Thanks Mixx and well, shall be back with my opinions and may be an updated review of Mixx, soon.

I need to remember for our next party - Londoners drink a lot more and stay out far later than their Silicon Valley geek counterparts. We actually ran out of alcohol completely at around 10:30 but Heather soon had another shipment brought in. I left at 1:30 am to get back to my day job. As far as I know the party is still going strong."(tratto da questo post su TechCrunch stesso)Max

In a handy overview with chart, TechCrunch looks at Virtual World Hangouts: So Many To Choose From. This is indeed growing into a crowded space. I predicted at a conference a while back that every single major toy brand would have an MMO within two years. Well, we’re getting close, what with stuff like Mattel announcing U.B.Funkeys, for example. Edit: and the BBC jumping in as well. And BarbieGirls.com has hit 4m users, and the toys just now hit the streets. Meanwhile, we have EA’s “chief visual officer” saying that chasing graphics is no longer the point because it’s becoming about user content — something which even a year or two ago was heretical within the industry. I’m going to have to come up with some new stuff to predict soon, because predicting the present ain’t gonna cut it. Source: Raph´s Website Online Games Virtual Worlds
I came across a post on Techcrunch today about selling on eBay which was based on an article in Christian Science Monitor. Most of the research which is mentioned is covered in posts on this blog, and so I thought I would link to them to make it easy to people to read what I have to say
Some buyers outbid the “Buy it now” price for a good, finding 45 to 50 percent of eBay auctions for a sample of iPods exceeded the “buy it now” price.
This was covered in this post.
The percentage of daily bids is highest at 8pm. The percentage of closing auctions is also highest at 8pm. The study says this may be counterproductive since it creates greater competition for bidders attention at that time.
I haven’t covered this actual study, but a German study produced similar results
Buyers seem to favor auctions with more bidders.
They don’t mention the source for this in the article, but it is cover in a study by Gillian Ku, reviewed in this post
Hey what do you know? Remember my post on InviteShare? TechCrunch was planning on launching a website similar to Invite Share but then InviteShare came out first. Ditching their plan to launch another website, TechCrunch acquired InviteShare through an auction at Sitepoint.com for $25,000.
TechCrunch says Invite Share will remain pretty much the same with a couple tweaks to fix up InviteShare.

InviteShare was recently put up for sale at Sitepoint, and sold to TechCrunch. I think InviteShare is a great idea, with the amount of beta invitation only sites out there and all. However as a revenue generating website, I have my doubts. I suppose with TechCrunch behind it, it is certainly going to get lots of traffic, and it will enhance TechCrunch’s already fantastic website. As a stand alone site though? I don’t blame the owner for selling it. Seems like a lot of work with little financial reward.

In a recent post on Techcruch, site founder Micheal Arrington just unleashes on an unexpecting new start-up.
Apparently someone affiliated (Maura Landry) with the new dead pool member start-up Panraven submitted a story to Techcrunch hoping to get some press. Well things could not have gone worse. The start-up is a Flickr competitor that claims to be killing them, but in the email they spell Flickr as Flicker with an E. Well for some reason Mr. Arrington has issues with adding “e’s” by accident, probably an over site considering the person spelled the word by the dictionary. But in Micheal’s defense it is a corporation and thier name is spelled “Flickr” but come on, why ream the guy for the misspelling. Its the internet people spell almost everything worng;). Techcrunch’s post are not immaculate either so who knows why he freaked on that one.
Then to add to the start-up’s misery the Techcrunch founder heads over to the site to check i
We applied for the TechCrunch20. The conference is being put on by our friends Michael Arrington and Jason Calcanis, long time critics of PPP. The two report that they will be judging the applicants "soley on merit". We have some radically new additions to the PayPerPost service offering "codename Birdo" that we would like to announce at the show. The question is how objective these guys can be when they have openly attacked our business model regardless of everything we have done to promote the disclosure movement (I will give you that Jason seems to be coming around). We have signed up over 5,500 advertisers in less than a year and are generating hundreds of thousands of dollars each month. I don't know of too many startups that have experienced the same type of user and (more importantly) revenue growth that we have. In addition to everything we have accomplished internally, next week we will announce we have completed a strategic acquisition. I think we have merit as a company, a
I am pleased to announce that late last night Mike Arrington and I came to an agreement whereby PayPerPost will acquire TechCrunch and all related "Crunch" properties. I am well aware of the irony of this situation given Mikes comments about PayPerPost in the past. This comes on the heels of TechCrunch's acquisition of FuckedCompany, which was already in progress and will be part of the deal. Through it all we have been able to come to an agreement whereby Mike will continue to run the Crunch sites but PayPerPost will be able to leverage the site for its advertisers. As a result of this merger, we will soon be launching a new "PayPerCrunch" feature, whereby Advertisers will be able, at our customarily low prices, to leverage the journalistic talents of Mr Arrington and his staff to fully promote our customers products and services.Mike and I are now BFFs, don't be surprised if you start seeing pictures of us partying together in Vegas.
A top 10 contender for any web developers blog list, TechCrunch is a great resource for keeping in touch with the new and the now of internet products and companies. Subscribe to their RSS feed and pay attention it if you have any interest at all in Web 2.0 or web apps that are new and cool.

It’s hard to get a PS3 right now, probably harder to get a Nintendo Wii. Word on the street is that it’ll be popping up in your local Best Buy or GameStop soon.
If sunlight isn’t your thing though TechCrunch has word “from a reliable source” that both consoles will be turning up on Amazon “in the coming days.”
Shoppers are in a tough spot right now, it’s the last big shopping weekend before the holidays and the second biggest left before the year ends. IF Nintendo Wiis and PLAYSTATION 3s are going to be turning up it will almost definitely be this weekend.
Studious Wii / PS3 fanboys will note that both consoles sold out pretty quickly on Amazon at launch. With the major issues that arose during the XBox 360 Thanksgiving sale (where 1k lucky buyers got a console for $100) there’s also the threat of Amazon’s servers crapping out under the pressure.
If you’re looking for either console, you may consider keeping your eyes
