Today's smart stuff is a teapot, but not just any old teapot. Firstly, it's ceramic, which is claimed to be the best for good tea. Secondly, it has two smart containers or saddlebags where you can put your teabag(s) after dunking them in the hot water, thus avoiding messing up the tabletop or your saucer. The website claims that this particular teapot is based on a fifties design, but we've never

I spent far too much time on this one.
The teapot must be 100 years old and belonged to my grandfather. This is just a humble "two-cupper", it has "Imperial Restaurant" engraved on the side and my grandfather used it all his life for his morning tea. I am ashamed to say that I was the one who dropped it so that the lid doesn't fit properly any more.
My great-grandfather was p

Drinking tea is a special time. Unlike coffee, where things are rushed at a breakneck speed, drinking tea is a time of introspection, and meditation. It is personal, spiritual and ceremonial. The Zygo teapot draws on these qualities to enhance the tea experience. Tessography/Tesseomancy, or as it is more commonly known as, tealeaf reading, is an age-old form of divination. Some think that it originated in ancient Greece, and others in ancient China.Once a very popular practice to gather insight, it has seemed to have sadly fallen by the wayside. I personally use various forms of divination, and tealeaf reading is one of my favourites.Contrary to what many

Doesn't this make you want to sing that song? I love this teapot. The fact that he has a matching mug is just icing on the cake. He reminds me of those old dish towels with anthropomorphic dancing dishes and cutlery. I'm pretty sure these guys sprout legs and play with the fiestaware when I'm not looking.

Craft Alliance's biennial teapot exhibition is one of the institution's most popular events. This year, the show includes more than 80 clay teapots made by more than 60 potters. The pots were chosen by master potter Fong Choo, who invited 20 artists and chose the rest from submissions. "I selected the works based on four criteria: strong form, great craftsmanship, skill in handling the medium and attention to detail," Choo said. Potters from all over the country are featured. In addition to being more or less functional — some of the pots might frustrate users — all the pots were required to fit within a 10-by-10-inch box.Full article

Johannes has been researching Gräfsnäs castle ruin near Gothenburg, Sweden. The former castle has an interesting history. According to the legend it was cursed by a woman that was badly treated by the landowner. She told that it would be plagued by fire three times with 100 years apart, and the castle was actually burnt in 1634, 1734 and 1834.During the day of the fire in 1834 many people came to 'rescue' the things in the castle and many things were stolen. It is believed that the teapot above came from the castle via a gardener. Can it be dated to before or after the looting in 1834 I wonder? It was made by a company called Shaw & Fisher...anyone know anything about them?

A wealthy art collector from Los Angeles said this month that he has pulled out of a commitment to exclusively display his eclectic collection of teapots at a museum in Sparta intended for them. The Sparta Teapot Museum has raised $4.2 million, including more than $1 million of federal and state money, to draw tourists to a region hard-hit by manufacturing losses. Now organizers say that even with the loss of the teapot collection they don’t intend to return any of the money they have raised.Full story by Sherry Youngquist

Organizers of the Sparta Teapot Museum, which received $900,000 in taxpayer-funded grants and a bushel of unwanted publicity, are planning to build a very different museum than first envisioned. It's expected to be a fraction of the original size and won't focus exclusively on a donated teapot collection. The wealthy principal donor plans to take many, though not all, of his teapots elsewhere and has all but abandoned the idea of building a 10,000-square-foot foundation headquarters in the small N.C. mountain town of Sparta.Sonny Kamm, the prominent Los Angeles securities lawyer who planned to donate his 10,000 teapots, said he's exploring other options.Full story
Celadon Glazed Porcelain Teapot Circa 2005The teapot above is a little more sophisticated than the first teapot that I ever made, though it has its fatal flaws too. Namely, I glazed the sieve holes shut and it will never function as a proper teapot. It sits on a shelf in my kitchen; and since I'm not a tea person myself we're very happy together.I'm not quite sure why pottery and tea go together like honey and bees but it does. There's a long tradition of making teapots by pottery and ceramic artists dating back to ancient China. I had the good fortune to watch a demonstration of a group of Chinese potters craft Yixing Teapots when I was in school at the University of Southern Maine. My professor, Ray Chen, brought the traveling artists to campus for a workshop that was just fascinating. The teapots are gorgeous, simple vessels that are hand built - no pottery wheel is used, only a paddle to shape it.In addition to the teapot demo, they also crafted handmade tools and brushes

Organizers of the Sparta Teapot Museum say they are scaling back the project that would house a Los Angeles millionaire’s unusual teapot collection. The museum was intended to draw tourism - and money - to this small town near the Blue Ridge Parkway, but organizers say now that the region cannot support what was initially proposed."Of course, our first plan was a wonderful dream. It was an absolute dream museum. The problem was we just couldn’t afford our dream," said Sandy Carter Herndon, a member of the museum’s board of directors. The board decided earlier this month to reduce the size of the building by more than half, cutting the cost from $14 million to an estimated $6 million. The move could jeopardize an arrangement to permanently display Sonny Kamm’s more than 7,000 eclectic teapots - a collection considered to be the largest of its kind in the world."There would be less teapots displayed, and it is unclear at this time what level of involvement we will have from Mr. Kamm
