Cover bands have long used their passion to perform the songs their idols once did on the biggest stage. However, a little tavern in Spokane, WA is finding out this may in fact be against the law. Known as The Flame, this tavern/restaurant has recently been slapped with a lawsuit due to copyright infringement concerning songs that are being performed for night time entertainment. Local attorneys representing the artists involved have asked that the plaintiffs be paid “no more than $30,000 nor less than $750.” The lawsuit and complaint were released earlier this week in which the attorneys stated, “Neither Defendants, nor any of the Defendants' agents, servants or employees, nor any performer was licensed by, or otherwise received permission from any Plaintiff or any agent, servant or
Buckley’s Tavern, a bar and restaurant located in a historic former house on Kennett Pike in Centreville, Delaware, offers nice atmosphere for a variety of purposes. The dark, cozy bar is a great place to get some drinks, the downstairs dining room (with fireplace) offers a charming ambiance for lunch or dinner, and the rooftop deck is great when the weather gets nice. Buckley’s also has an interesting brunch policy—dine in your pajamas, and you get ½ off the bill. Enticing, but neither of us did it. Jeff’s Take:I started off with a bowl of mushroom soup—a generous portion of mushrooms with leeks and tomatoes in broth. I’m a big mushroom fan, but I found this soup to be pretty boring. The broth was salty and unimpressive, and after I finished scooping out the mushrooms it wasn
The Wis Tavern Building, Frank and Lisa Mauceri’s renovated home (and office of their company, Smog Veil Records) is the first LEED-H Gold Certified home in Illinois. CondimentSpreader seems to be self-medicating with beef. When you find yourself really hungover anywhere near Powell, please consider the Lotsa Luck Tavern...20 oz Pabst and burgers that they put cheese on BOTH sides of the patty. I don't understand why no one else adopts this practice. Seriously genius. You really have to be in the right state of mind to step to this place. Opt for the mushrooms and swiss. Pretty inexpensive. My cohort braved the addition of the over-medium egg and required nap shortly thereafter.Lotsa Luck Tavern2136 SE PowellPortland, OR 97202(503)232-0030

The Victims: Al & Louise and friends
The Background: Al & Louise are THE BEST. They've got a sitter for the evening for Baby Oscar and they've organized dinner at one of their new locals. I've never been to Tufnell Park, so I am excited! Field trip! And you know what...my local bus goes STRAIGHT there. Which is nice.
The Entrance: I like it. It's pub-y. And large. And friendly. We have about three different people waiting on us and they are just all so nice. Particulalry the French guy. He's a keeper.
The Starters: We start with some bread and olives which are nice. The bread is good. And then I go for the squid and it is really just average. It needs salt. The menu says it's spiced. It's not. Note, however, that I said the same exact thing about my Katsudon at Sasa Sushi earlier in the day, so maybe it's me that needs salt! But I mention
By now a senior member of the recent explosion of gastropubs in Philadelphia, Royal Tavern has been garnering praise from a wide sector of Philly foodies ever since it opened its doors. After far too long a period of good intentions, I finally paid it a visit recently. I couldn’t think of a better place to enjoy a burger and a beer before a show at the TLA (recently and ridiculously renamed “Fillmore at the TLA,” but that’s another story…). So, we headed over to Bella Vista early in the evening, avoiding the crowds and crap on South Street in favor of an easy walk down Passyunk Avenue.Straight off, I knew it was my kind of bar. Basic setup, dark but not so dark you can’t see, a little funk in the air but not so much as to scare your new friends away, and a bar at which it’s comfortable enough to eat. If you’re self-conscious about your lack of ink – I’m not – The Royal might not become your new daily hang. But if you’re looking for a bar with a friendly vi
The Curse of the Billy Goat has its its roots in the 1945 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers. According to the legend, William Sianis a Greek immigrant took his pet goat, Murphy to the Series, but instead of sitting in their seats, Sianis and the goat walked out on to the playing field to garner publicity for Siani's tavern that was across the street. It didn't take long before both man and goat were escorted off by ushers. The pair returned to their seats, but orders came down from the Cub's owner, Philip Knight Wrigley to eject Sianis because the "goat smelled bad." After Wrigley insulted the goat Sianis placed a curse on the team, saying that the Cubs would never win another pennant or play in another World Series at Wrigley Field. The Cubs eventually lost the 1945 World Series and have not been back to the championship series since. Sianis' nephew has paraded a goat around the field a few times in an attempt to break the curse without any luck. The Bill

I received this note from a reader at 3:17 p.m. today. Likely because of the “blow” part, this reader wishes to remain anonymous.I wanted to let you know that they were filming “The Dark Knight” at Twin Anchors Restaurant & Tavern at 1655 N. Sedgwick St. (Eugenie and Sedgwick). It looks like they were shooting inside the actual bar as well as in an alley beside it.They closed down that part of Eugenie with their gigantic white trucks starting at about 9 a.m. I also saw two of the crew doing blow in a truck in front of an elementary school. It’s nice to see a little bit of Hollywood coming to town. 3:39 p.m. update: In a follow-up e-mail at 3:37 p.m., the same reader said:This was ealier this morning (June 28, 2007). They were still there when I left for work at about noon.I saw some people in odd costumes. One dude looked like he was wearing something you’d expect to see a Benedictine monk wearing. It was sort of like a Jedi cape thing.I didn’t see any of the big namers,
י"ט באייר תשס"זAn anonymous commenter on Mitzvah Of Besom [1] & The First Tzimtzum has made an interesting observation regarding the gematria of 207, as follows:ain 61 sof 146 aur 20761 + 146 = 207So, what we have in this gematria are two sets of 207 - one set, a dark essence (ain sof אין סוף) and one set, a revealed light (aur אור). Ain sof aur means light without end. Yet, ain sof is a dark essence, while aur is revealed light. Consequently, we can see that the light without end is a reunification of dark and light. In this gematria, we also have another connection to the lone structure which remained standing following this weekend's devastating Kansas tornados, the tavern Bar H (בר ה), also with a gematria of 207. Bar H corresponds to the light (aur) of the complete phrase ain sof aur.Bar H, the tavern which became a beacon of light. What an elevation for that humble little bar! Like sacred ground.Footnote:[1] A besom is a witch's broomstick.Technorati t

It’s true kids, even Cincinnati has a “secret show” every now and then. Our man Dave happened upon an impromptu and not advertised show last night from Heartless Bastards here in town, and has a bit to say about it.

Most fortunately for me, I decided to go out last evening. I was casually enjoying a refreshing beer outside the Northside Tavern when my roommate pointed out to me, “Hey Dave, look who that is.” Having seen the Heartless Bastards enough times to cover both of my hands, I knew that it was Kevin Vaughan, the drummer from the band, and he was conveniently unloading a drum kit. After asking around, I found out that much to my delight, the Bastards would be playing a secret show that very evening.
It was a rocking set from the power trio, with an especially large amount of energy emanating from Erika Wennerstrom, the group’s diminutive lead singer. What she lacks up for in size, she makes up for in sheer vol
