The original 2005 Five-Hundred and Freestyle debuted to a slow sales start and were around until 2007, when the Ford CEO Alan Mulally decided to resurrect the Taurus nameplate on the refreshened 2008 models. Along with their new names of Taurus and Taurus X, each got corporate faces with three-bar grilles as well as the automaker's new 3.5L V6. UPDATE: More images added.The first official image of the refreshed Freestyle crossover surfaced today courtesy of BlueOvalForums. Exterior changes are visible and chrome, lots of them, are visible. You might have been surprised when you noticed the title of this post. Ford dropped the F____ naming system and instead, brought back old nameplates. The Freestyle really had no ancestor, so Ford stuck an X, standing for crossover, onto the Taurus nameplate.Ford had expected large sales of the 'innovative' Freestyle when it was released in 2005. However, bland styling, coupled with an underpowered engine, retailed for a fairly high price certainly didn't appeal many. Ford's three-bar grille found on the Fusion, was added. New wheels are also visible and new taillights can be vaguely made out. Ford's new 3.5L V6 replaces the previous 3.0L V6 engine in the engine bay.Will a few exterior changes, a gussied up engine, and a new nameplate change the whole perception? We have yet to find out

Although it was not officially announced by Ford, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the announcement could come as early as this week in Chicago.Ford was strongly criticized when they killed the highly-acclaimed Taurus nameplate and adapted the F_____ naming system. The Taurus is back, well not quite. Ford re-debuted the facelifted 500 with a familiar name in Ford's archive section. The Taurus has no changes from the 500 which debuted this January in Detroit apart the new name.The new Taurus follows Ford's new naming system of bringing back old nameplates. Although the Sable and the Taurus X has yet to make its official public debut, the Taurus has already debuted as the Five Hundred this January in this year's North American International Autoshow. The Taurus is equipped with Ford's Duratec V6 engine pumping 260HP, 57HP more than the previous 500.The 500 is known for having fairly high prices since it was marketed as a full-size premium sedan. The name change has been rumored for months, as new Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally indicated he's been interested in the Taurus and why the automaker would put the name in mothballs since he joined the company last year.The Five Hundred has sold poorly compared to the Taurus, with year-on-year sales dropping more than 50 percent last month.The Taurus is widely considered to be the car that saved Ford when it was introduced in 1985. The Taurus had a longer best-selling run than the original Model T and was the best-selling car in the U.S. between 1992 and 1996. Ford ceased production of the Taurus in October after sales of nearly 7 million.This is not the first time that Ford has experimented with rechristening a model. The first official image of the refreshed Freestyle crossover surfaced today courtesy of BlueOvalForums. Exterior changes are visible and chrome, lots of them, are visible. You might have been surprised when you noticed the title of this post. Ford dropped the F____ naming system and instead, brought back old nameplates. The Freestyle really had no ancestor, so Ford stuck an X, standing for crossover, onto the Taurus nameplate.Ford had expected large sales of the 'innovative' Freestyle when it was released in 2005. However, bland styling, coupled with an underpowered engine, retailed for a fairly high price certainly didn't appeal many. Ford's three-bar grille found on the Fusion, was added. New wheels are also visible and new tailllights can be vaguely made out. Ive been planning to buy a grand prix gtp but unfortunately the price are too high for me to have it. A friend have this car and wants me to buy the same model. So having not enough money for my dream car i followed my friends recommendation. Now i have it for less than 10 months and so far has given me no problem except for the replace of transmission cooler lines. I would like to recommend this also to everybody. We're not quite sure how one of TTAC's Best and Brightest got ahold of this image of the new Ford Taurus, but ours is not to question why (ours is to do and, uh, that's it). It sure is a handsome beast-- throwing the new new Taurus' (né Five Hundred) Audi-aping shape into the bin where it belongs. Imagine if this car turns into a mega-hit for Ford? How ironic would that be? The car that saved Ford before saves Ford again, birthed by the exec who's career was inspired by the tale of the first Taurus' birth. At this point, all we know is that Ford's legal department is very busy this morning. Or it could be a head fake; an intentionally leaked shot. We'll give you more information as it arrives.
