      Pocket Taser
A guy who purchased his wife a pocket Taser for their anniversary submitted this. Last weekend I saw something at Larry’s Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety….?? WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two triple-a batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I’d get the blue arch of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs.?? AWESOME!!!? Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.?? Okay

L’incident

      The taser deaths issue
Let's take a break from hockey for a minute. The whole issue of whether or not police officers should use taser guns because of recent deaths shortly following taser usage is front in center in Canada right now. I think this issue is worth a looking into. Call me a cynic, but I'm not biting on the whole sensationalized media angle on it. Sure, it looks cruel and no one wants to see people writhing in pain or possibly dying afterwards. Check out this clip of a guy getting tasered in Utah:Dude Tazed For Not Signing Ticket - Now how does it make you feel after watching that? Angered? I am going to be honest with you. In some ways I'm not a big lobbyist for human rights. I am a person who believes in the death penalty for example. When it comes to tasers being used on uncooperative and/or violent criminals or law breakers I am all for it, for the most part. Police need to have the option of immobilizing pain in the ass offenders. Taser guns not only protect the police, but make their

Police in London authorised to use Taser’s without firearm’s training in December
News today that come the 10th December in London, the Metropolitan Police will be authorised to start a trial of the use of electric stun guns, otherwise known as Taser’s, by those in the force who have not been trained in the use of firearms. From www.gnn.gov.uk: “Cindy Butts, Deputy Chair of the MPA, said: “Once again, members raised legitimate concerns about broadening the use of Taser to routine policing. We remain worried about the message this sends out to London’s communities about the escalation of confrontation and need further reassurance that vulnerable people who may behave differently - the young, old and those with disabilities - will not be adversely affected. “However, we have to recognise that the national Home Office pilot is now underway. Our concerns have not gone away, nor have they been answered. Disproportionality of those the Taser is used against, the vulnerability of certain groups who may experience the threat of Taser use, and t

Police “taser” a man to death at Vancouver International Airport
I was mentioning airport security in respects to the “War on Terror” earlier today.. It is with a heavy heart and a sorrow filled with angry frustration that I just read about and then watched Robert Dziekanski, a man who had arrived in Vancouver International airport from Poland, being killed by Canadian Police. This happened on 14th October this year, with details only emerging now. You can read a report here which has a video link. Otherwise here is a direct link (for now) on youtube, of the camera phone video footage from a witness, Paul Pritchard. I do not think I am guessing far from the truth, watching the video, that Robert, being a Polish national, not speaking English, and flying for the first time, to meet his mother was someone who, after being apparently detained for 10 hours at customs, was scared, confused and upset. That is entirely understandable. We do not know what happened in the preceding 10 hours. We do not know Robert’s frame of mind. What we do

Taser This: It’s OK to F**k Bush
The decision is in regarding Colorado State University newspapers editor and his recent OpEd which had nothing to do with its subject. According to CNN CSU faculty member Jim Landers read a statement prepared following the decision of three faculty members and six students: "We see the editorial as an opinion which is protected by the First Amendment. We feel that it caused harm to The Collegian and to student media. It is our judgment that his actions were unethical and unprofessional." Ultimately: “The editor-in-chief of Colorado State University's newspaper will keep his job after he published a four-word column that said, "Taser this: F**k Bush." The CSU Board of Student Communications met Thursday for nearly four hours in a closed hearing before deciding to admonish instead of fire Rocky Mountain Collegian editor-in-chief David McSwane.” This is obviously not my decision, but the “verdict” is questionable as it is not just free speech that they are r

Taser This? What Bush? A CSU Opinion
David McSwane, the editor-in-chief of The Rocky Mountain Collegian printed an opinion piece for the paper entitled, “Taser this: F**k Bush,” which recently (9/21) caused quite a stir in what McSwane claimed as his “decision (at) exercising his right to free speech.” The College Republicans at Colorado State are working on a petition to have the editor-in-chief resign; they have also been suggesting to businesses that advertise in the college paper to withdraw their ads. To date businesses have taken back $30k in advertising, which in turn has resulted in student employee wages to be cut by 10%. Not surprisingly Alesia Gifford, vice president of the Young Democrats, supports McSwane’s free speech rights: "In this society we are taking a step backwards, especially with the free speech debate. President Bush has lost our respect as a country. "At some point we have to stand up for our rights. [McSwane] was just showing that speech, even when explicit, should alwa

      A Taser of Heroic Proportions
I was watching Heroes the other night on TV. If you have not ever seen it, it is on Monday nights on NBC. It is a pretty good show with the main premise of ordinary people who woke up one morning with extraordinary powers, eventually leading up to trying to save the world from an bomb that will destroy New York City. As the tagline goes “Save the Cheerleader. Save the World.” I have seen a number of the episodes, but I have not followed it too closely. This past week’s episode that I caught was about traveling forward in time five years, showing what happened if the bomb was not prevented in the present day. The episode was packed full of the normal superhero action and excitement - invisibility, flying, shapeshifting, psychokenisis, etc. There was even a scene when Parkman pulls out a taser and zaps Hiro unconscious. Of course, that scene was the one that registered the most with me. Hey, I sell those, I thought to myself. At the end of the episode, I turned to

Tabatabainejad refused to show his student ID to a security guard during a check at the Powell Library because he believed he was singled out based on his Middle Eastern appearance, the lawsuit said. He is Iranian-American... ...Tabatabainejad said he tried to remain calm, explaining to the officers that he was a student and that he suffers from bipolar disorder.
