Democrat Russ Feingold is pressuring the Indian government to dump "patently unfair" tariffs on Harley Davidson (HOG) motorcycles in the nation.
In February, Harley got the right to establish dealerships in the country that will at least bring down some of the costs and better entrench the brand.
Rather than shipping the bikes individually to buyers, they can bulk ship some and sell them there.
The government got a bit of kicking on Wednesday night when 33 Labour MPs voted for feed-in tariffs to be included in the Energy Bill. The government did not want the amendment, and in the end, it got its way and feed-in tariffs were left out.
The amendment would have required energy suppliers to buy renewable [...]

Viet Nam, in an effort to discourage more motor vehicle purchases because of poor roads and traffic congestion, hiked tariffs on imported cars for the second time in less than a month, dealers said.
Tariffs on car imports rose to 83 percent from 60% in a move that one Hanoi-based car importer said "would make imported cars at least 10% more expensive than now and that would reduce demand

NEW cars could face tougher carbon emission standards and special assistance to manufacturers could be withdrawn under options in a major review of the car industry.
The federal review, led by former Victorian premier Steve Bracks, will also see if tariff protection levels should continue beyond 2010.
Launching a discussion paper in Melbourne yesterday, Mr Bracks said the industry, which had annual exports of $4.7 billion, faced stiff international competition.
“The big new challenge is competition from China and India and eastern Europe and Russia,” he said.
But Mr Bracks said Australia had superior design and research skills, and should develop its existing large-car niche.
“There’s always going to be a demand for large cars,” he said.
“There is the po

A clamber of quangoey energy/green groups - Energy Watch, the National Consumer Council, the Renewable Energy Association and the Energy Saving Trust - have written to Defra to suggest that electricity suppliers be required to provide information on the fuel mix used in each of their customers’ tariff. Their issue is that green tariffs are [...]

Following the targets for renewable energy included in the recent Climate Change and Energy package, there has been debate about the role feed-in tariffs might play in the UK. Most environmentalists support a feed-in tariff, citing evidence from Europe that such schemes have increased renewable capacity. The government is going to investigate this summer.

European plans to lift tariffs on energy-saving light bulbs from China were put off for a year Wednesday as fears of Continental job losses prompted a protectionist backlash against Europe's top trade official, Peter Mandelson. A split inside the European Commission led Mandelson to abandon proposals to end the duties of up to 66 percent this year in favor of a pledge to scrap the tariffs in 2008. With European imports from China growing steadily, the dispute has become a part of the broader discussion about the impact of globalization and of the extent to which the 27-country European Union should use defensive trade measures. But it also has repercussions for the EU's push to tackle climate change since the bloc wants to phase out the use of common incandescent light bulbs for domestic use within two years. European production can meet only 25 percent of demand for energy-saving bulbs, the commission estimates. A senior European official, speaking on condition of anonymity, cha
Switching to green electricity is a complex decision. You probably get all of your power from the national grid, which makes your electricity exactly the same as everyone else’s. So how can your electricity be greener?
There are two types of companies involved: suppliers and generators. Generators own the power stations, wind farms and other plant that provide electricity to the grid. Suppliers manage retail relationships and must either purchase wholesale electricity from a generator or operate their own generators. In fact, to manage capacity, all suppliers trade in electricity to some extent.
The mix of generation sources is what we are trying to change; suppliers are our levers. Pretty much every supplier now offers a green tariff. They work differently and some are more effective levers than others. Three key questions to ask of green tariffs are:
Does the supplier also cater for non-green tariff customers and ‘allocate’ its renewably generated electricity to a limited numb
