Adwords has provided some great news for startups looking to expand their CPC spend. Many businesses pick the low hanging fruit in CPC and soon need to find new avenues to expand. I have tested the site-targeted option in Adwords with poor results. A site-targeted campaign (now called Placement-Targeted) is used to place an ad on a website in the adsense box and was based on a CPM model. For those of you who have not used it, CPM is a payment model based on impressions. You would pay $X.XX per 1,000 impressions. If you target sites with large traffic flow, the impressions and cost could add up quickly. With the new Adwords CPC model for site placement, you only have to pay to get real traffic. I am still running tests to gauge if the cost per click is comparable to normal search ads. I will add an updated post with results compared to normal Google search ads.

Google has made changes to its Site Targeting feature in Adwords, by allowing advertisers to pay on a Cost-per-Click basis when choosing a site for advertising. Previously, advertisers could only pay per thousand impressions (CPM), the CPC option being available only on keywords-targeted campaigns. The name “Site Targeting” has also be changed to “Placement Targeting”. Site targeting campaigns have become very frustrating even for advertisers aiming at branding. Although CPM remains available in the new “Placement Targeting” model, it is clear that this model will be much avoided by smart advertisers because of its poor performance and lower cost-efficiency. To put it simply, Placement Targeting (the CPC model) combines the best of both world: you choose the sites on which your ad appear (avoiding therefore bogus sites or MFA pages), but on the other hand, you only pay for clicks occured. When it purchased ad tech firm Strategic Data Corporation in February, MySpace publisher Fox Interactive Media promised to capitalize on the mountains of data from user profiles to better segment its audience and refine ad targeting.
