On one safari, or Swahili for journey, we saw more than 240 species of birds, dozens of mammals, reptiles and numerous insects including “pants down” ants. Our time afield was in four-wheel drive vehicles with popup roofs affording ample room for observing and photographing. In national parks, off-road driving is prohibited so wildlife can be easily approached. We traveled by 18-foot flat-bottom

Tanzania, that east African nation with the beautiful, exotic name is a new travel destination for many. The nation’s rich cultural heritage and diverse landscape makes for a once in a lifetime adventure to this land of cerulean hued waters, snowed capped mountain peaks and thrilling safaris on the plains of the Serengeti. This nation, roughly twice the size of the state of California is also home to the famous Masai tribe, some of the world’s most strikingly statuesque people.Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak often called the roof of Africa at 15,100 feet and enjoy the view of the surrounding plains or travel to the heart of Masai country, also in northern Tanzania to visit Ol Donyo Lengai. This active volcano, measuring close to 10,000 feet in height is located in the Ri

MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE – Nighttime at Bateleur Tented Camp, just outside Maasai Mara National Reserve in western Kenya, near the Tanzanian border.
I’ve just returned to my tented, bush-surrounded camp cabin after a spectacular dinner on Bateleur’s open-air dining verandah: coconut carrot soup; a salad of pumpkin, beetroot, and rocket with walnuts; grilled Indian Ocean prawns with stir-fried onions, potato, spinach and corn; and a mousse-like chocolate pate with passionfruit sauce.

By: Ian WilliamsonLodge Safaris in Tanzania I will try to avoid the travel clichs of unique, off the beaten track and renowned for These tired expressions are used over and over again for almost every destination in Africa! The lodge safari in Tanzania is by far the best way to see this lovely country. Tanzania has so much to offer, including many parks that have few visitors and high concentrations of game animals. Some National Parks boast just one lodge in a million hectares. Your Lodge safari in Tanzania can truly offer a taste of what the early explorers experienced. When choosing your lodge safari, do so with care. Many visitors want to see the great migration and the Serengeti. Some lodges are in fact hotels and although very nice; they do not contribute to that out of Africa experience. What is called for is a camp experience and the private camp is ideal for a special experience. When you look to plan your trip try not to go for the lodge safari but the private camp safari. You
By: Low JeremyAs far as African safaris go, Zambia is the one that keeps its secret for many years and still keeps some though it is already beginning to take its crown for African safaris top destinations. Zambia wilderness safari is absolutely an unknown realm when compared with more traditional national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and game reserves. But this still does not negate the fact that at some rate, the wilderness safaris that Zambia posses can be rated as top caliber and may even equal the qualities of other more visited hot African safari picks. To save you from scouring over magazines, books and online, we have already collected information on some of the premium wilderness safaris, game reserves and national parks in the country. Please read on!Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park In spite of its difficult-to-pronounce name, Mosi-oa-Tunya still has something exceptional to scream for, the mighty Victoria Falls. This sight is probably the reason why the park is named as such, which

Looking into Crater
Originally uploaded by hobosinlove
The Ngorongoro Crater is on the eastern edge of the Serengeti in northern Tanzania. The crater is 8,000 square kilometres of pure safari bliss. It is also the largest unbroken ancient cadera in the world. To get to the bottom of the crater for wildlife viewing we had to drive down 2000 feet. The Hobos were amazed at all the wildlife! We saw herds of Thompson’s gazelles, water buffalo, hippos, lions, eland, cheetah and a hyena lurking around about 1000 flamingos. The crater is home to some 25,000 animals and you can see the “big 5″ there as well. Lion, rhinoceros, leopard, elephant and water buffalo. The one thing the Hobos were surprised about was the amount of Maasai that were living in the crater, raising their cattle. Herds of cattle grazing next to elephants is truly a unique picture! We were approached by some local Masaai and although they seemed very friendly we were not allowed to

We spent about one week on the island (a few days in Stone Town and a few days here). We enjoyed ourselves very much. (how could you not?) On New Years eve we were told by some locals of a beach party, so our group went down to the beach to have a celebratory dinner and then went over to the bar for drinks afterwards. The bar we went to was a replica of a pirate ship. The front of the ship was cut away to make room for the actual bar. It was huge and had four or five different levels. There were about 75 other people partying on all of the different levels and everyone was having a great time. We then heard that our driver Roy, who was still in Dar es Salaam, was put into the hospital because he had malaria. We were all worried about him because it was t

A kiss is just a kiss…
My introduction to the wildlife of East Africa was a kiss from a giraffe. No, this isn’t a metaphor. We’re talking about a real wet lip-smacker here, a “come here big boy and let me give you a taste of my long black tongue” kiss.
But let’s back up a bit.
I arrived in Africa from London at about 8:45 on a humid Nairobi night. Almost immediately on exiting the plane, I was greeted by a smiling woman from the safari company that had organized my tour, and whisked through Immi
Tanzania is not a good place to give birth in, and it's getting worse:
Tanzania is ranked the fifth most dangerous place in sub-Saharan Africa for a woman to give birth, behind Sierra Leone, Niger, Malawi and Angola, according World Bank development indicators.
For every 100,000 babies born alive in 2000, Tanzania saw an average of 1,500 women die during pregnancy, child labour or shortly after delivery, World Bank statistics show. That year, almost 21,000 women died after problems arose while they were pregnant.
The situation had worsened from a decade earlier, when the maternal mortality rate was 770 per 100,000 live births and about 8,700 women had died due to complications during pregnancy.
A 2005 government survey, gleaned from a door-to-door campaign, put the maternal mortality rate at 578 deaths out of every 100,000 live births, up from 529 in 1996.
And why is the situation like this?
Under-resourced hospitals, a dearth of clinics in remote areas, poor transport and poverty

Lake Manyara National Park is a lush green strip of land between the water and the Rift Valley escarpment which provides the most dramatic backdrop. The reason why this land is so green is that most of the rainfall in the area occurs on the highlands just above the lake.
I don’t know whether we can say that the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is the best hotel in the world, the second best, or trailing in at number five. What I can say is that this is an outstanding travel experience which more than justified the bank-account emptying price tag.
The young Masai warrior who is with us begins to laugh, long and deep. This is clearly the funniest thing he’s heard in a while. It’s like a Masai telling us he would survive in London by asking a passer-by for £100.
We are staying in one of half a dozen tents in a mobile camp which moves round the Serengeti with the wildebeest. There is nothing to separate you from the life of the great plains stretching for hundreds of miles in front of us. Hyenas howl outside the tent most nights. The odd giraffe stumbles by. Leopards are chased away now and again by the staff. We are given a small whistle to use in case of ‘real emergencies’. I wonder what that might be like.

Tanzania already offers some wonderful attractions for african safari enthusiasts and tourists will be able to enjoy further riches via a new attraction named Kagera. What is Kagera? Kagera will be a destination open to tourism and creating a link between the popular central and eastern african tourist circuit.Lush African SceneryKagera has plenty of diversification. Culturally, it provides a variety of attractions and historically, it has a detailed and rich past. But it's the wildlife and scenery african safari seekers will no doubt be eager to see. The Kagera region is just about on the equator which means an equatorial forest landscape which is both lush and rich in beauty and wildlife. Kagera will officially make it's mark during the World Tourism day celebrations and it represents an opportunity for Tanzania to showcase some of it's forgotten treasures. It's not hard to understand that some of what Tanzania has to offer may have been taken a little for granted given the fa
There is an interesting piece in The New Statesman about how, in 2001, Tony Blair approved, if not pushed through, a deal for an antiquated, inappropriate and expensive radar system for the Tanzanian government, despite the fact that they could not afford it, as they were saddled with debts they could hardly pay and their people were living in poverty and riddled with AIDS. The article ends:
Months before approving the deal, the Prime Minister said Africa was a “scar on the conscience of the world”. I don’t doubt his sincerity in wanting to reduce poverty. But when Blair reflects on his premiership from the comfort of retirement, the Tanzania radar saga will be a scar on his conscience.
So, we know that Tony Blair wanted the deal to go through; but was everyone else happy with it at the time? International Development Secretary, Hilary Benn, was against it. “his former boss Clare Short rose [in the Commons] to condemn a deal she had opposed tooth and nail at th
