Sprint Nextel Corp is planning to sell at least six new walkie-talkie style phones in early 2008 using Qualcomm Inc’s QChat technology. Sprint is planning to phase out Nextel's walkie-talkie service. Sprint has been struggling to keep customers of Nextel's iDen walkie-talkie service which it inherited from its 2005 purchase of Nextel Communications. QChat is crucial to replacing the struggling Nextel brand.Sprint is currently testing QChat technology and will launch the service with walkie-talkie cell phones from Motorola Inc, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Sanyo Electric. The transfer of subscribers from iDen to QChat will take time as customers need to buy new phones. Additionally, because the first QChat phones will be based on a brand new technology they may cost more than some iDen customers are willing to pay. QChat will run on Sprint's CDMA wireless network.
