      The amazing city of Taipei
Taipei is the capital of Taiwan, and is an example of quickly development. Taipei has now 2 500 000 inhabitants (with the suburbs triple!) . In 1830 was still a small village, and started to grow. Very close to Japan, it took a profit even from the Japanese occupation. In 1930 was already a proud smiling [...]

      Taipei: 101
Not too many people travel to Taiwan for vacation. In fact, I have to admit that I didn’t have any real interest in ever going to Taiwan until a whole group of our friends from KL moved to Taipei this year. But last weekend, I had the opportunity to discover that, clearly, we were all wrong. Taipei is an exciting, trendy, vibrant city with tons to do, a strong cultural connection, and a real cosmopolitan energy. Last weekend Alex and I had the pleasure of spending four days in Taipei thanks to our very hospitable friends, Darby and David, who let us stay in their palace of an apartment in Tianmu. We had such a great time hanging out with them and playing with their brilliant 15 month old daughter, Elliette. We also got to visit with our friends Mel and Dave who used to life in KL, which was an excellent surprise! As soon as we arrived in Taipei we headed out to visit David at work (at Taipei American School), which is in the Tianmu district of the city. Just on that short ride to

10 Point Escape Plan to Taipei
New high-tech wealth and a flurry of upscale shops, clubs, and restaurants that have opened in the capital city are sparking a “Taipei is the next Shanghai” buzz. It’s not quite there—yet—but visitors will appreciate a more reliable transportation system as well as friendly locals who speak better English than their mainland counterparts. After winter’s chill and before summer’s monsoons is the best time to go. Plan on a five-day stay, after which it’s an easy jump to other Asian hot spots. 1. Bring some Ambien for the eighteen-hour flight to Taipei. China Airlines flies direct from JFK (with a refueling stopover in Anchorage -reindeer jerky makes an excellent snack) or fly from London with EVA air direct. 2. The most stylish of the megahotels is the 856-room Grand Hyatt Taipei (from $172; 886-2-2720-1234) in trendy Xinyi. For less bustle, try the chic 84-room Les Suites Taipei Ching-Cheng (from $210; 886-2-8712-7688), with flat-screen TVs and a lovely garden. (more&h

Taipei, the political and financial center of Taiwan, is the island’s most populous city. Taipei originated as a small trading port over two hundred years ago before becoming the administrative capital under the Qing Dynasty. During the last few decades there has been tremendous growth in the city. Now a sprawling metropolis, Taipei is an ideal place to visit for those who love the hustle and bustle of the big city. Bei Tou (Peitou) Located in the northwest, Bei Tou is famous for its sulfur springs, spas and hotels. One of the more popular sulfur pits is Hell Valley.

The Coral Reef Alliance - Coral Reef Tourism Protects Its Pot Of Gold, Taipei Times, 06/22/07By Bonnie TsuiSource: Taipei Times06/22/07Green sea turtles, cascades of glittering reef fish, blooming coral pillars -- countless travelers have come nose to nose with a thriving undersea universe while on vacation. But increasingly, divers and snorkelers are swimming over bleached hunks of coral devastated by shore runoff or overfishing. From the South Pacific to the Caribbean, coral reefs -- which are among the most delicate of marine ecosystems -- are bearing the brunt of climate change and other human-driven activities -- including coastal development, deforestation and unrestricted tourism. Now, many in the tourist industry are trying to halt the damage and it is no wonder. The dollars involved in reef-based tourism are significant: Australia's Great Barrier Reef alone draws about 1.9 million visitors a year, supporting a US$4.2 billion industry. Trip to Taipei, Taiwan
The recent pause in posts has been due to a short break we've taken in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. The two and a half hour flight from Incheon with Asiana Airlines was a bargain 270,000 won each. Our accommodation during the holiday was the remarkable Grand Hotel. It may look very grand from the outside, but inside the rooms and facilities are of a regular three star hotel, still, the foyer was quite impressive. Our first stop was the world famous National Palace Museum. We took advantage of the free guided tour in English at 10am. The well-spoken and enthusiastic lady lead us around the highlights of the museum's many precious artefacts including Chinese porcelain, ivory and jade. The museum has recently been renovated and all the rooms are well lit and all the objects had detailed English descriptions. The audio guide we used when going around for a second time, was also of a high quality and gave useful and interesting information. This is a view of the second building, currently h

Around Taipei in less than a day
We made a day trip to Taipei the day after that tiring journey to Nantou. Our first stop was the main office of MECO where me made a courtesy call to Gen. Edgardo Espinosa, resident representative of MECO Taiwan. We then proceeded to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications for a courtesy call to Mr. C. T. Su, Director General of the Tourism Bureau. With all those appointments, our entire morning was gone.So after lunch, we went straight to the National Palace Museum. It is said to house one of the best collections of Chinese artifacts. In fact, the collection is quite controversial and is the subject of a dispute between the Mainland and Taiwan. The National Palace Museum was established in Beijing in 1925 with the expulsion of the last emperor Puyi. In the 1930s and 1940s, the artifacts, which consisted of the valuables of the former Imperial family, were moved from place to place to avoid falling into the hands of the invading Japanese.During the final years of the Chinese C

Taipei has launched a muniVoIP system using the city's muniwifi network. For now it seems to be focussed on government workers, including free calls to city officials (including schools). It looks like a small step to include on-net calls for citizens. It will be interesting to see how this develops.
