Federal health officials are investigating dozens of blood infections linked to medical syringes contaminated with bacteria. About 40 people have been sickened in Illinois and Texas, including 20 outpatients from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
The infections have been traced to syringes filled with heparin, a blood thinner, which are used during home treatment for cancer and other ailments. The infections were caused by Serratia marcescens bacteria.
Syringes from the same batch also were sent to Colorado, Florida and Pennsylvania.
The infections cause fevers and chills, and can be serious, but generally respond well to antibiotics.

A California produce company recalled bagged fresh spinach Wednesday after it tested positive for salmonella.
There were no immediate reports of illness linked to the tainted spinach, distributed by Metz Fresh LLC of King City, Calif. The recall comes nearly a year after an outbreak of another pathogen, E. coli, in fresh spinach killed three people and sickened another 200.

Ohio woman, distraught over the loss of her yorkie, says Wal-Mart has offered $6.97 in response to her claim that tainted dog treats killed her dog.
A Cuyahoga Falls woman says Wal-Mart should have pulled the Bestro Chicken Jerky Treats earlier than July 26th.
She directly blames the treats for her Yorkie’s death.
While the local animal hospital can not confirm the treats triggered the dog’s sudden kidney failure, her receipt clearly shows she purchased the now pulled tainted doggie treats.
Wal-Mart quietly pulled the product along with Chicken Jerky Treats from Import-Pingyang Pet Product because of customer concern that the treats were making pets sick.
Testing confirmed the treats contained a low level of a pesticide, Melamine.

Wal-Mart has quietly pulled a made in China dog treat from its shelves. However, there has been no public announcement, and there’s no telling how many contaminated bags of treats may still be out there.
Kate Collins of Aston still finds it hard to talk about. She loves her Chihuahuas. She has two now, but her youngest is gone. Two-year-old Bella died suddenly last month after eating Bestro Chicken Jerky Strips.
Bella was dead within a week. The other dogs didn’t get the same treats and they’re fine.
The animal hospital did an autopsy and found that Bella died of an infection caused by toxic bacteria.

China closes firms over tainted products…
China said Friday it had shut down a chemical plant implicated in the deaths of 94 people in Panama from medicine containing an antifreeze ingredient and also closed two companies whose products have been linked to the deaths of dozens of pets in North America.
China’s quality control agency also said police were investigating two of the companies — Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd. and Binzhou Futian Biology Technology Co. Ltd. It did not elaborate.
The two companies, along with Taixing Glycerin Factory, are at the heart of the food and drug safety scares that in recent months have damaged China’s reputation as a reliable exporter. While the government has announced the detention of an unspecified number of managers from Xuzhou Anying and Binzhou Futian, Friday’s actions are the most severe and definitive taken against the companies.

TUESDAY, April 24 (HealthDay News) — Contaminated pet food, the focus of a massive nationwide recall last month, has been fed to hogs in at least five states, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday.
Forbes.com reports that ten pet food manufacturers sent unusable dog and cat food containing the toxic chemical melamine to hog producers in California, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah and possibly Ohio, FDA officials announced during a late afternoon press conference. Contaminated pet food was also sent to one chicken farm in Missouri, the officials added.
“Hogs that have been fed salvage pet food in North Carolina, South Carolina and California were tested, and levels of melamine were detected in their urine,” Dr. Stephen F. Sundlof, FDA’s director of the Center for Veterinary Medicine, told reporters at the teleconference.
