Federal health officials are investigating dozens of blood infections linked to medical syringes contaminated with bacteria. About 40 people have been sickened in Illinois and Texas, including 20 outpatients from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. The infections have been traced to syringes filled with heparin, a blood thinner, which are used during home treatment for cancer and other ailments. The infections were caused by Serratia marcescens bacteria. Syringes from the same batch also were sent to Colorado, Florida and Pennsylvania. The infections cause fevers and chills, and can be serious, but generally respond well to antibiotics.

Austin’s KXAN report on tainted pet toys
I was watching the local news last night when I saw a teaser about pet toys tainted with lead, chromium, and cadmium. Immediately I thought, “oh great…here we go again.” So of course I watched rather impatiently waiting for the new story on tainted pet toys. When it finally came on, my first thought was “Holy cow! The writer’s strike has hit local news - this is a repeat.” KXAN was reporting on tainted pet toys that had been in the news back in September. I’m not sure why it took them so long to report what had been reported on back in September. They referred to a September 16 story on tainted pet toys by Consumer Affairs.com.  I wrote about it on September 16 (and so did many other bloggers)  - the very same day ConsumerAffairs.com posted the tainted pet toy story. Don’t get me wrong. With the holidays coming up and people out there buy gifts for their pets, it’s good to keep people informed. But I do wish KXAN would have at le

H.R. 3580, in conference, was passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the President. In particular, it is Title X (the last section), that has bearing on our issues. This new law mandates the FDA come up with new labeling and production standards for pet food within 24 months. It also requires that the FDA set up a pet food registry and notification process similar to the one the CDC uses for human pathogens. We still have more work to do, in particular regarding foreign import restrictions, but this is the FIRST MAJOR STEP.You can view the bill here: H.R. 3580Specifically, TITLE X - FOOD SAFETY, Sec. 1002 pertains to pet food. Wal-Mart offers $6.97 to woman whose dog ate tainted Bestro treats
Ohio woman, distraught over the loss of her yorkie, says Wal-Mart has offered $6.97 in response to her claim that tainted dog treats killed her dog. A Cuyahoga Falls woman says Wal-Mart should have pulled the Bestro Chicken Jerky Treats earlier than July 26th. She directly blames the treats for her Yorkie’s death. While the local animal hospital can not confirm the treats triggered the dog’s sudden kidney failure, her receipt clearly shows she purchased the now pulled tainted doggie treats. Wal-Mart quietly pulled the product along with Chicken Jerky Treats from Import-Pingyang Pet Product because of customer concern that the treats were making pets sick. Testing confirmed the treats contained a low level of a pesticide, Melamine. Dolores Cole is distraught over her 5 year old dog’s death. The pet has helped soothe the pain of her daughter’s recent death. Cole says she does not wish extra money for her suffering, but would like Wal-Mart to cover her $1,200 in ve

Wal-Mart statement on tainted dog treats
Wal-Mart has issued the following statement about the melamine-tainted jerky treats that they quietly pulled on July 26. (emphasis is mine) Pet food safety is a top priority at Wal-Mart, as we understand the important role that pets play in the lives of our customers. We proactively removed Chicken Jerky Strips manufactured by Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co and Chicken Jerky manufactured by Shanghai Bestro Trading with UPC 0087784900006 from our stores on July 26, 2007. Since then, the product has remained off shelves while we have carried out seventeen different tests to determine the cause of the small number of complaints we received. The latest advice from our testing laboratory shows trace levels of melamine. Because of the low levels that were found, our laboratory has recommended additional testing. Nevertheless, the product remains off shelves and we continue to take the extra precaution of placing a computerized block on the product at the cash register. Moreover, we encoura

Padilla Guilty Verdict Being Called a Tainted Victory for Bush
You can read here the first article I have seen that has to start to downplay the guilty verdict of Jose Padilla. But critics and law experts called Thursday’s verdict a messy win for the government, in which it was able to avoid answering for its long detention and interrogation of Padilla without the legal rights normally granted U.S. citizens, and, his lawyers said, for torturing him. Many people quoted in this article begrudgingly admit that the Padilla quilty verdict was a victory for the president, then they go on to diminish the verdict.   Here are some quotes: “The verdict is important because it provides cover. It validates the government’s tactics in a way that the jury may not have necessarily meant to,” said American University law professor Stephen Vladeck. “Padilla has had his day in court, but only with respect to the charges, and not to his treatment and not the lawfulness of his detention for 3-1/2 years in a Navy brig,” Vlad

Tainted treats sold at Wal-Mart suspected in dog’s death
Although there have been no recalls on this item, Bestro Chicken Jerkey Strips, sold at Wal-Mart are suspected in a dog’s death. And if you didn’t already have enough reason to boycott Wal-Mart, here’s another! (emphasis is mine) A Delaware County woman says her dog died after eating dog treats made in China. Wal-Mart has quietly pulled a made in China dog treat from its shelves. However, there has been no public announcement, and there’s no telling how many contaminated bags of treats may still be out there. Kate Collins of Aston still finds it hard to talk about. She loves her Chihuahuas. She has two now, but her youngest is gone. Two-year-old Bella died suddenly last month after eating Bestro Chicken Jerky Strips. Bella was dead within a week. The other dogs didn’t get the same treats and they’re fine. The animal hospital did an autopsy and found that Bella died of an infection caused by toxic bacteria. Kate bought the treats at the Wal-Mart stor

China closes companies that exported tainted products
China closes firms over tainted products… China said Friday it had shut down a chemical plant implicated in the deaths of 94 people in Panama from medicine containing an antifreeze ingredient and also closed two companies whose products have been linked to the deaths of dozens of pets in North America. China’s quality control agency also said police were investigating two of the companies — Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd. and Binzhou Futian Biology Technology Co. Ltd. It did not elaborate. The two companies, along with Taixing Glycerin Factory, are at the heart of the food and drug safety scares that in recent months have damaged China’s reputation as a reliable exporter. While the government has announced the detention of an unspecified number of managers from Xuzhou Anying and Binzhou Futian, Friday’s actions are the most severe and definitive taken against the companies. The measures appear to be aimed at reassuring global customers

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love (1966)
When the name of Gloria Jones comes up in rocktalk, it's usually as a trivia question. Firstly, in the mid-'60s she recorded the original version of "Tainted Love," which was covered by Soft Cell for a huge international hit in 1982. She was also the girlfriend of British glam rocker Marc Bolan, in addition to singing and playing keyboards in his T. Rex band. Her considerable talent as as a soul singer gets lost in the shuffle, especially because few of her recordings are currently available. Jones earns a spot in rock history on the merits of "Tainted Love" alone. This propulsive mid-'60s soul stomper, wholly dissimilar to Soft Cell's wimpy synth-pop cover, is one of the great '60s hits that never was. "Heartbeat" was another throbbing near-miss, recorded with, oddly enough, producer Ed Cobb, who was more renowned for his work with garage-pop groups like the Standells and the Chocolate Watch Band. Both "Heartbeat" and "Tainted Love" were written by Cobb as well, although Jones wa

Tainted Foods Are Daily Problem in Asia
From Casper Star TribuneHANOI, Vietnam - As Nguyen Van Ninh needles his chopsticks through a steaming bowl of Vietnam's famous noodle soup, he knows it could be spiked with formaldehyde. But the thought of slurping up the same chemical used to preserve corpses isn't enough to deter him."I think if we don't see those chemicals being put in the food with our own eyes, then we can just smack our lips and pretend that there are no chemicals in the food," he said, devouring a 30-cent bowl of "pho" on a busy Hanoi sidewalk. "Why worry about it?"While the discovery of tainted imports from China has shocked Westerners, food safety has long been a problem in much of Asia, where enforcement is lax and food poisoning deaths are not unusual. Hot weather, lack of refrigeration and demand for cheap street food drives vendors and producers to find inexpensive _ and often dangerous _ ways to preserve their products.[Read more]

Tainted Pet Food Found in Hogs In Several States
TUESDAY, April 24 (HealthDay News) — Contaminated pet food, the focus of a massive nationwide recall last month, has been fed to hogs in at least five states, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday. Contaminated pet food was also sent to one chicken farm in Missouri, the officials added. “Hogs that have been fed salvage pet food in North Carolina, South Carolina and California were tested, and levels of melamine were detected in their urine,” Dr. Stephen F.
