This week a study was published about the finding of one central London Hospital A&E department, St. Thomas'. In brief they have found an increase in alcohol related problem in the early hours of the morning. This change has happened, apparently, since a change in the UK licensing laws.A government spokesperson was quick to point out that this was just the experience of one hospital. I think it was the BMA who then countered with words to the effect: "Yes, exactly - so we need more research". I suspect various government department don't want to know the answer because they have not been enthusiastic about asking the question (in terms of more research). A very informal piece of research by the BBC at an outer London hospital tended to support the St. Thomas' finding.A spokesperson for the drinks industry was quick to dismiss any link between their industry and alcohol related problem, pointing out that the supermarkets were to blame. There does seem to be evidence that peopl
Chihuahua (Mexico), May 31 (IANS) Two hundred women have overcome male chauvinism and superstition to carve out a niche - albeit tiny - in Mexico’s expanding mining industry, reports the Spanish news agency EFE.
Resistance to females in mining springs both from the sexism that remains rampant in Mexico and from miners’ lore, which holds that mines entered by women will experience accidents or see their mineral deposits run out.
Old-timers say such calamities occur when the feminine spirit that inhabits the mine reacts with jealousy to the presence of female rivals.
The president of the Mexican Mining Association, Xavier Garcia de Quevedo, said the country’s entire mining industry, with a workforce of 279,000, employs a maximum of 200 women.
The first mining company to promote the employment of women was Peñoles, which began training women 10 years ago at La Herradura, located in the northern state of Sonora and is Mexico’s largest open-pit gold mine.

In a post several days ago, I was looking for assistance in taking better photographs of Trillium. In that post, I mentioned that as part of my query I was breaking a taboo by purposefully showing poorer images, the ones that I would never display, to an audience. There is even an old saying about this that goes something along the lines of “The difference between an amateur and a professional is that the professional never shows you the shots that didn’t make it”. I was thinking about this issue some more, and feel even more strongly that it can be a wise decision to show your poorer images, it just depends on the venue and purpose. For example, I would never display images that I thought didn’t quite make the cut. I would never want to make a show out of them. But I think that there is a good deal to be learned by examining these shots that ‘didn’t make it’. For one, and this is probably the most obvious reason, it gives an opportunity to request input from o
