The new CEO of Tesla Motors, Michael Marks, has sent out a letter to all customers on their waiting list confirming that Tesla's engineers have recovered of most of the range that had been lost to weight increases and other engineering changes. The Roadster has now been validated on the EPA combined cycle with a range of 245 miles (252 city and 236 highway) per charge. They have also made structural improvements with one of the validation prototypes now having passed the side impact test that caused problems for an earlier version. However, prospective buyers will have to wait longer for their cars. Tesla's updated production schedule will see them only building a small number of production cars by the end of this year with the first fifty being delivered in the first quarter of 2008. Once production increases they plan to produce a further 600 cars by the end of the 2008 model year.

I also love the original 1970’s version of the song by Ram Jam. You probably haven’t heard of them. They were a one hit wonder and they did not write the song originally.
The song ‘Black Betty’ was written in the 1930s by Blues legend H. Ledbetter, aka Led Belly. It’s rumoured that it really originated from an old railroad work gang chant or from the chants and rhymes children back in the 1920’s and 30’s used to sing while jumping rope.

Let me come clean right from the start. I don't for one second believe the yada-yada that is used to sell this thing. From the site:

You may recall that TTAC took Tesla to task over its range claims for their all-electric Roadster-- which the company stoutly defended, then revised downwards from 250 miles to 200. We also warned that Tesla wasn't likely to meet their already once-postponed summer delivery date-- which they didn't. And now the erstwhile automaker has announced that they'll start releasing cars to customers in October. Or November. Forbes reports that Tesla CEO and co-founder Martin Eberhard is adamant: "We will definitely ship in that time frame." Eberhard attributes the company's third delay to a "late change in the transmission vendor." No word yet on whether the Tesla Roadster has passed federal crash tests. And you'd kinda think the company would have a working press car by now, less than three months from its [alleged] launch. Rest assured that we'll be following this developing story as it develops. This website has been skeptical of Tesla Motors’ claims for their lithium-ion-powered Roadster since day one. While some readers think we’ve “had it in” for the California-based car company, rest assured TTAC is an equal opportunity muckraker. Anyway, yesterday, when Martin Eberhard revealed that he’d relinquished Tesla's top job, we held fire to avoid accusations of smug satisfaction. But Eberhard’s email to Tesla customers piqued our interest. As Tesla has yet to deliver a single customer car, by thy words thy shall be known.
