Among the featured guests for the evening was actor Stephen Baldwin and writer/director Rocco DeVilliers, both of whom answered questions and signed autographs after the screening of their movie. This year marked the fifth anniversary of the film festival, which brings togeth

Villanova beats Syracuse in a Battle of the Bubble Teams
This was a game which undoubtedly would decide the tournament fate of both Big East teams.  Villanova and Syracuse were sitting either squarely on the bubble or on the outside with their faces pressed firmly against the bubble looking in.  Somebody wouldn’t be dancing next week. Villanova started the game tentative and off from behind the [...]

      West Virginia annihilates Syracuse, 55-14
To atone for a dismal showing last weekend in a 21-13 to South Florida, the 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers corrected their major problem from last week (turnovers) in demolishing the home team Syracuse Orangemen 55-14.  The Mountaineers converted two deflected passes into touchdowns into touchdowns in the first half against the Orangemen (1-5, 1-1) to build a commanding 31-7 lead. Mountaineer quarterback Pat White who last week sustained a thigh bruise against South Florida, was banged up again; however, he went 12-of-15 for 148 yards and a touchdown and also had 14 carries for a team-high 89 yards and a rushing touchdown, as well.  One bit of good news for Syracuse on Saturday was that the much-aligned Orangemen defense held Mountaineer running back Steve Slaton, second in the nation with a 122.4 yards per game average, to 69 yards on 15 carries.  Syracuse wide receiver Mike Williams led the Orangemen with 2 catches for 72 yards, including a 61-yard TD reception in the 3rd

Previously, he was based in Columbus and stopped by here every now and then. The changing of the guard has begun. When Clark was asked about Howson as General Manager he had this to say:"I'm sure he'll do a good job in Columbus. I would have done a good job, too, if given the chance,'' Clark said. "I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm disappointed I didn't get a chance to work with Scott awhile. If I had another year in the organization, maybe there was another (job) I would consider.''UPDATE: According to the Dispatch will be let go after this season when his contract expires on July 1. Syracuse’s Gross says swimming cuts a financial decision (CSTV U-WIRE)
(U-WIRE) SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse officially announced Friday it will cut the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams after the 2007-08 season and add a women’s hockey program beginning in the 2008-09 season. Syracuse Director of Athletics Daryl Gross addressed the media on a teleconference call Friday afternoon and said the decisions were made based on research within the athletic department that concluded Syracuse needed to buy a new facility for the swimming teams — a financial more…

UCLA Names Starting QB; Michigan Loses Backup QB; Syracuse Gets Star WR for Another Year
QB Ben Olson Named Bruins' Starter (LA Daily News)News: UCLA coach Karl Dorrell has named junior Ben Olson the starting quarterback. It was no surprise that Olson won the job, but an announcement wasn't expected until after the team's spring game. Dorrell and his staff apparently had seen enough from Olson and junior Patrick Cowan to make the call earlier than expected.Fantasy College Impact: It's nice to know that Olson is the starter heading into the season, but fantasy owners would still be smart to handcuff him to Cowan. Olson began last year as the starter as well until he got hurt. Cowan took the rest of the snaps in 2006, even though Olson was healthy enough to return and the end of the season. Olson has already been battling a bad hamstring this spring, so expect both players to see some time in 2007.For more info on the Bruins, check out Pre Pro Sports' UCLA fantasy preview.Michigan QB Jason Forcier Transfers to Stanford (Detroit News)News: Quarterback Jason Forcier said

      Interview in Syracuse Post-Standard
Last week, I was contacted by William LaRue of the Syracuse Post-Standard, of Syracuse, New York, to add a fan’s perspective to Jericho. He said that what caught his attention was that in Episode 1.13 - Black Jack, the map that they show for a moment at the Fairgrounds shows one of the new “governments” set up in Upstate New York, but debate has been raging as to where the actual base is located. Well, yesterday morning, I got to see my 15 minutes of fame. I really enjoyed talking with Mr. LaRue, though I do wish that I hadn’t gone all “Valley Girl” with the “likes” in the quote that he ended up using. Though it is cool that I ended up in a couple of paragraphs in the article. Here’s my contribution - Amber Hansford, an Atlanta resident who runs the WatchingJericho.com fan site, says one reason she enjoys “Jericho” is the fact producers pack episodes with this kind of detail that rewards careful viewing and sparks spe

The Orange are returning a very young team so most of these guys won't see anything more than spot duty. The lone vacancy at the skill positions will be at QB with the graduation of Perry Patterson, but highly touted sophomore Andrew Robinson is set to take over - possibly for th

Balanced Attack Leads Syracuse Past UCONN Men
Demetris Nichols, 20 points, led 4 Syracuse players in double figures as they defeated the UCONN Huskies 73-63 on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. The win avenges a 7 point loss to UCONN 12 days ago. Paul Harris had 16 points, Eric Devendorf 15 points and Andy Routins had 13 points to round out the Orangemen in double figures. UCONN was led by Jerome Dyson, who scored a career high 27 points. Hasheem Thabeet added 11 points for the Huskies. The first half was not very pretty as both teams had trouble scoring. Dyson got hot early for the Huskies with a couple of 3 point baskets before a Devendorf jumper tied the game at 18 with 8 minutes to go in the half. The game stayed close thru the rest of the half with Syracuse pulling out to a 6 point lead before a Stanley Robinson 3 pointer at the buzzer got UCONN within 3 points, 35-32, going into the locker room at the half. Starting out the 2nd half, a Nichols jumper and a dunk to go along with 3 missed shots by UCONN, led Coach Jim Calhoun t

Syracuse Common Council: Festival Beer and Wine Tax is Painless and Necessary
Syracuse is my hometown, so a recent news report about a potential new tax at outdoor festivals in the center of the city caught my eye. A number of non-profit groups host festivals in Clinton Square that draw thousands of people to a downtown where bars and restaurants can use the spill over business. On Monday the Syracuse Common Council will vote on a proposal to impose a 12.5 percent tax on beer and wine sold at these events. On one side of the ledger are event organizers who take all of the risk to bring in entertainment, pay for tents and staging, and shell out cash to promote the events. If bad weather hits, they usually will lose money. Sometimes beer and wine sales mean the difference between a profit or a loss. On the other side is the city of Syracuse, which does not charge rent for the use of Clinton Square for the events, but says it spends $350,000 each year for police coverage and clean up after events. They say the new tax will cover just a portion of those costs.Towns b
